No, it is not. OS2008 is buggy for finger tapping to many users. If it cannot detect one, two, three or four times in a row that you press your finger and not the stylus to pop-up the finger keyboard there's a major problem. And you know what? It has a major problem with that, check bug.maemo.org and you can find many users (as me) complaining about that.

Many Thumbs up, borrow thumbs from my whole family as we all using N800.

Dl, install, up and running in less than 15 min!

Step by step:

1) Fully charge your N800,
2) Install the Nokia software update from http://europe.nokia.com/A4305010, and follow the instructions.
3) Hook up your N800 with the USB to PC, and use automatic update.

The previous way, first dl, then install does not work as smooth since the update file is NOT named *.bin, and an extra step is needed before the update wizard recognise the file. Of course, if you want to update to a version NOT the latest, you will have to dl first then update.

Videocenter and Skype is up and running. Katie Couric is just as sweet as in OS2007 :)

I have to edit my initial 'thumbs up'. It's become thumbs down now I've used the new OS a bit longer.

- browsing is slow with the capital S. To the point it's useless. (I now know why they made the cpu run faster...)
- memory use of the browser skyrockets on some pages. It didn't do that on these pages in OS2007.
- browser settings seem not to work: it's not saving passwords and the dictonary isn't using new words.
- thumbkeyboard is useless (mentioned before, but nevertheless)

Not directly OS related:

- repositories not reachable, as a result many apps not installing (ie. Canola)

All in all it's a firm thumbs down. Downgrading seems a good option.

I give it a thumbs down, and reflashed back to 2007. Although the media player plays more video types, and I like the radio, I could not get my i747 to work. But more importantly for me, I lost the ability to run VNC. I bought my 2 N800s to use to read my company email "page", to web browse, and to jump onto my servers in emergencies (not as media toys). As a non Linux person, 2008 gave me no help. Perhaps as more apps become available but I use the 2007 more. Wish there was a LOT more MS Office integration too. The browser seems to freeze a lot. And still looking for an easy FTP (GUI) program...

Thumbs up.

I certainly will not go back to OS 2007. The Browser is good – better than MicroB and Opera in OS2007. Mediaplayer, RSS and mail work fine for me. Browser is a bit slow and there are some flaws, (still my favourite Reuters is not displayed correctly) but I'm sure they will be solved.

My repositories in my application catalog are still a mess. I had to use my old settings to get things running. I am wondering how all those fresh Amazon Internet Tablet (best seller) buyers did cope with all this.

Nevertheless, all applications work nicely. Streaming YouTube is much better.

Some questions:
- Can somebody tell me when I can make a 'fresh' download from the Nokia site to sort up my repositories?
- Why do I need mplayer for wmv videos? Was expecting the Mediaplayer to do that in OS2008.
- Streaming mp4 in Mediaplayer is very good: watch mp4 from this site.: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/...in706903.shtml
- However I still can’t see many mainstream sites: for example BBC news (video). Any ideas ?

Fully Agree. It's still a nerd thing. :o

Next week the fun is over and do I have to work with and talk to real people (not within a Tabel Forum) again ! :D But: it was fun and the Tablet with OS 2008 is a succes: does a lot more and better than the IPhone! (good thing to shout at, but not a computer).
I wrote earlier that "those Maemo end TEAM people" must mature their work (architecture, quality control, etc.) rapidly. This all is still true, but reading their - very defending - reactions taught me that they do understand and I am confident they will get things better. .
I also see the potential for great success and love my N800 with OS 2008 and the walkaround web!

(And, next week, I will take my N800 to work, just for showing off ....)

So I guess Im the only clown using OS2008 and who is satisfied ?

I'm using the N800 as is and always with the stylus.

Never had a trouble with OS2008, Browsing is rock solid for the websites I go to. No touchscreen problem as I'm using the stylus (hey, it's a computer, not an iPod Touch...)

I'm quite happy with OS2008. If it's "useless" for browsing, as one person in this thread said, why are so many people using it? I'm just watching a Frontline story that is excellent. How did I do that with something that is useless? Doesn't that mean the same thing as "cannot be used"?

Another newbie here who is very satisfied with my month-old N800 now with OS2008. It does all I expected it to do and more. Great Wifi connections, tethers to my SE W810i just fine and e-mail is no problem. It turns on and off perfectly and has lots of battery life.

Loaded Skype... it worked fine.... then I uninstalled it since I won't use it. Same with Gizmo Project (including video to and from my home PC).

Just for grins, I took a couple of DVDs and following a few links and instructions from Internet Tablet Talk, converted and loaded a few movies on the thing for when I'm stuck somewhere with nothing to entertain me.

My N800 rides happily in my car's glovebox where it is used as necessary... not as my primary Internet access tool.

In my personal case, it is a mixing feeling situation.
Lets start with the positive side: the speed; in fact is almost a hardware improvement due the embedded processor overclock, and speed is always welcome!
The interface is a way better, more readable and comfortable.
The smart thing that when you install apps from the app manager, it remembers your last selection.
Better WM streams capabilities
Negative side/suggestions:
"Right clik" does'nt always locks in position
Drag and drop doesn't always works..(sometimes you need several attempts to get the things done)
The "fingers keyboard" issue
I don't understand why there isn't an easy way to add/delete icons on left side of the desktop (contacts, web, etc) I've found some "dictatorials aspects":D here, p.e. you can´t easily get ride of the Raphsody thing. You can only remove empty folders when you are rearranging folders (?)
Don't understand also why you can't put folders' shortcuts on desktop. (Is there a way to do that?)
Nice would be if the Nokia update wizard let you to select when you want to install the OS and apps (I mean be able to install the OS on Internal-external card whe flashing). That will be and easy, non scary process for those "normal" users that don't will to play with fire thru the dual boot installation procedure.
Not complete WM streams capability, still some of them works, some others not.
