There's a couple of possible differences. The first is that the maps available through Nokia Map Loader may be more up-to-date than those preinstalled. The second is that I think the pre-installed maps only cover the local region (based on where the phone was to be sold). If you've imported the phone, or are looking to travel overseas, you'll need to use Map Loader to add additional regions.

HOW TO MAKE NOKIA MAP LOADER WORK IN WIN 7 64-BIT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Find the .qf file in the root dir of the n900 phone's flash memory

2) Make a copy of the .qf file, and rename it to "qf" (without the dot in front, unhides the file) in the root dir of the n900 phone's flash memory

3) Make another same copy of the file named "qf" and put it into the root dir of the sd card as well

4) Use the n900 in PC Suite Mode with Nokia Map Loader

Notes:
So there are 2 identical files named "qf", one on sd card and one in phone memory. The 2 qf files seem to appear as 1 file in PC Suite mode, and the n900 is detected in PC Suite mode.

Nokia Map Loader seems to report the capacity of the sd card, but the maps are actually loaded to the phone's flash memory. I'm not sure what happens when you exceed that limit or try something funny.

I'm interested in any comments whether this method works with Windows Vista 32/64-bit and Windows 7 32-bit.

P.S. I'm using Win 7 64-bit, Nokia Map Loader version 3.0.28.0.

P.P.S. Virtual PC eats resources and is a hassle, that is why I try to avoid XP Mode.

Hooray!! It works! I tried it before on an XP notebook even!

Also I made all file visible in Windows Explorer even hidden and Sytemfiles but I'm not sure that made the difference.

Windows 7 Pro 32bit

Re: Nokia Map Loader

hello guys...

i got my phone back from a guarantee repair and when trying to re-upload the maps, the download is always interrupted with a message "Connection to the storage medium has been interrupted. Attach your storage medium and retry."

Since Google is my friend, i tried there but the only answer i found was on nokia forums for symbian where the explanation was a conflict between some ATI graphics card software and the Map Loader. The key issue here is that i don't have ATI graphics but Intel GMA 500 (poulsbo) in an ASUS 1101HA ... thus, i've got no idea on what the conflict may be...

Using Windows 7 Home Premium and Map Uploader v.3.0.28.0...

Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

Thx in advance...

Re: Nokia Map Loader

ok... got it to work... the problem was that my microSD card was set to "read-only" for one reason or another... now it's working well both with the old loader and new ovi...
