Installing packages with apt-get

I've installed and mounted the debian file system. But when I type:

apt-get install r-base

it can't find the package. I'm not sure how to get apt-get to find the right repository.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

@Rabilon: post the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list from your debian rootfs just to be sure the complete set of repositories is there. Also, try to find it by using synaptic.

rabilon 2008-11-10 13:33

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

sources.list was empty. synaptic does not run. When I click on the icon, nothing happens.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

@rabilon: so edit your /etc/apt/sources.list as follows
Code:

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian lenny main contrib non-free
deb http://packages.linuxniche.net/deblet deblet main
deb http://simplemachines.it/debian armel-sid/
deb http://simplemachines.it/debian armel-experimental/

then apt-get update
then apt-get install r-base

Rick B.

That's really suspicious. /etc/apt/sources.list should not be empty if you used any of my rootfs tarballs. If you're using the minimal one, it may not have synaptic, but it certainly has the sources.list file. You're sure you mounted the empty image file and then untarred the rootfs into the image file?

rabilon 2008-11-10 18:08

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Yes, I'm sure I followed the steps. I executed each of the four commands for mounting that were listed and didn't receive any error messages. I then used:

tar xjvf basic-debian-chroot-fs.tar.bz2 -C /debian

This took a while to uncompress and created a lot of entries.

Before uninstalling everything and starting over, I will add the information given by debernardis first and try apt-get again. Thanks.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

@rabilon:

Just one more thing, make very sure you are not updating the sources.list of your main maemo system! Make sure you have chrooted into Debian ("sudo debian") before changing your sources.list file or running apt-get.

Perhaps, just to be sure, open a "regular" terminal and check that /debian/etc/apt/sources.list is the file you edited, rather than /etc/apt/sources.list

I'm writing this because I'm worried you're about to do something dire...

If you add Debian repositories to your maemo sources.list, or you try to install Debian apps into maemo, you will completely hose your tablet.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

I've got some idea related to turbo-deb.
For many applications 800 pixels in width is acceptable
but there is common issue of "home user with not so big monitor".
Vertical 480 causes problems - how could I get such thing as in standard linux xserver that viewable area is 800x480 but virtual desktop is bigger?
For example 800x800 or just "huge" like 1024x768?
I'm not sure how would it behave on n8x0 device but as far as I know in standard xserver scrolling takes place automatically with mouse movement near screen's edge.
BTW is there some ready-made usb mouse support in easy-turbo-deb?

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

ok, I'm going to apologize in advance and just suck it up when someone tells me to search the forums cuz I have and I get too many "debian"s popping up. Heres the problem. Installed fine, icons all show up. When I try to run any debian apps, I get a quick flash, and then nothing. I've tried several apps, all the same result. The only thing that I can catch is when I start LDXE it flashes the "log off" window. I haven't run Linux in years so I'm rusty on trying to do anything thru command line on my own. When someone has some time to point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Willowave: reboot your tablet (shut down and restart), open a terminal, and enter, "sudo debian" then cut and paste the text you get into a message here.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

Willowave: that's a really odd error. Your image file opens OK, but then you start getting "Permission denied" errors. My only guesses are that your SD card is read-only or that somehow you didn't get root access properly. This second one really should not happen.

Try this in the terminal:

Code:

touch /media/mmc1/test.txt
If that gives an error, your SD card is read-only. Check the tab on the card. Also, corruption can do that.

If that command works fine, then...

Suggested Remedy:
1. Uninstall easy-deb-chroot using Application Manager
2. Reboot
3 . Install easy-deb-chroot using Application Manager
4. Reboot
5. Open a terminal and try 'sudo debian' again.

Willowave 2008-11-12 00:18

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

It made the test.txt just fine, I was able to go and open it even from file manager. I will try to reinstall again. Can you give me the command to format the media card thru terminal? I think I will try that before I try to reinstall again. Thanks for your help. I'm just glad to know it wasn't something obvious or silly. It was kind of driving me nuts.
Thanks again!!

I've solved my screen size issue using tightvncserver and 770x770 res as Qole proposed in different topic.
About performance - I assume that standard debian armel compilation doesn't make use of FP unit and so on.
Maybe some special libc would help as on 686 - optimised for our hardware but who could make one?
Mencoder runs 4times slower comparing per MHz with PIII system with SIMD opts.

Hi qole.
I been trying to run jnlp on Easy Debian under browsers (both).
It open window, load applet, starting applet, BUT when i'm trying to login - applet tells "no connection to server".
Is strange, because applet been downloaded from the same server using https. Looks like something is blocking connection. If you are interested in this jnlp

Another question (in case we'll run it successfully)- is it easy for you to make Easy Debian to Easy Light Debian with only browser and full java support ()removing the rest of programs? Why i'm asking so? I am not close to programming, but can follow instructions.

qole 2008-11-13 18:00

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

intery: are you using Java Web Start for this? You shouldn't even use a browser for jnlp apps.

EDIT: and believe me, this really is "Easy Debian Lite". A 1.1 GB Debian file system is tiny.

Yes, thats right, but i did not find is Java Web Start configured for this as Java Web Start - i find that is Netx-5. Any way there is netx-5 implemented so it run applets, and after it run them (no matter from where : Java Web Start or browser - both start) applets connections are blocked to server. I been trying to get login from applets with versions Java 1.1 and 4 and 5 - same result. Just try to login... may this is my misconfiguring of browser or whatever. I would like to know is only my lack or system?

Yes it light, sure, sorry, but would i know how much take gimp, open office and rest apps i would be clearer in explication. No matter, more important is java, that's what i have to resolve.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

To get the command line Java commands pointing to the right place, this post by Picklesworth suggests running the following command from the Debian Chroot (root) command line:

Code:

update-java-alternatives -s java-6-openjdk
After the configuration process, the Java Web Start command line should work properly...

Sorry, yes, the javaws command line uses Netx.

I know almost nothing about this stuff, I never use java, maybe someone else can help.

EDIT: I have been more successful running .jar files through 'java -jar applet.jar' than .jnlp files via 'javaws applet.jnlp' ...

Just tried the FXGame java applet. Tried to sign up for an account at their website; got lots of errors from their server!

It isn't a connection error. Java reports:

yes it is, but only if it connect via proxy, because when i check this test "#4 may fail if you are behind a firewall"

so it fail when standart login >Connection was terminated during a read<
and it fail when proxy login >Unexpected end of file from server<

both fails are on the side that something interrupt connection to ports. At the same time on PC everything run no fails. I send request to app. provider, but...
You wrote that you've no idea about java staf there, may be you know who did java for your ED-TCE?

And another question: could have an influence on connections and etc. that fact that we use image version of ED-TCE instead of straight partition install?

From my point of view are only few steps to get java polished for those who want java on NIT.

There's no magic here. This is the standard Debian Arm EABI (armel) architecture. I installed the Open JDK packages, which, in Debian, consist of the openjdk-6-jre and icedtea-gcjwebplugin packages to give us (fairly good) Java support. These packages are to Sun's Java what the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were to "real" dinosaurs*; it is mostly "real" Sun Java, but where Sun couldn't release open source components, the community has substituted open source bits. Here's a good article from May 2008:

Quote:

...the other Java deployment technology, Java Web Start, which also currently lacks an open source replacement... We’ve integrated and extended NetX, an open source web start implementation... We’re making good progress on gcjwebplugin’s two missing features: a LiveConnect Java/JavaScript bridge and signed applet verification.

This one is simple to answer. No. No impact at all.

*Remember how the scientists in the story were missing bits of dinosaur DNA, so they substituted frog DNA in those places? Yeah. That's what I meant.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

I was not able to install the minimal system or at least I could not get it to run - probably I was not understanding how to run things. I reformatted the internal memory and installed the full easy debian. When I start the debian chroot, everything works OK. I freed up some space and was able to just barely install r-base. I would like to free up more space. Can I uninstall openoffice or iceweasal? Will this cause any problems?

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

you can uninstall openoffice, done it and everything else is fine :

#apt-get remove openoffice*

did the trick !

installed "phpmyadmin" package and "localepurge" and "bluefish" and "hydrogen" too ;-)

Audacity installed in chroot, but no sound :-(
not as hydrogen, fully functionnal !! :-)

When I said "there's no magic," I guess I just meant that I didn't do anything special for Java. It is all standard Debian packages that I installed using standard Debian apt-get. There's lots of magic here, for me too. I already confessed that have no idea how most of it works, either. :o :(

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

intery: The problems you are having do indeed seem to be related to the open Java webstart program. Two possible solutions I found here are:
  1. Put the domain you are trying to connect to into your /etc/hosts file
  2. Run javaws with the -nosecurity option...
    Code:

    javaws -nosecurity https://fx2.oanda.com/java/beta.jnlp

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

OK, that worked fine. I freed up something like 188mb by removing openoffice. When I run R and produce a plot, it displays nicely (it resizes after tapping the screen). But when I minimize the window, I cannot find a way to bring it back. I can make new plots and display them and R indicates the plot devices are still being used, but there is no hook in the OS to retrieve them. A similar thing happens with nedit. I installed the nedit editor and I can launch it from the command line. But when I minimize the nedit window, I have no way of bringing it back (which makes it useless!). Any ideas on getting around these problems? Thanks.

qole 2008-11-17 21:05

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

rabilon: You have three choices.
(1) Use these applications in LXDE or
(2) open the Debian Chroot and use "wmctrl -l" to list the available windows and then "wmctrl -a <windowname>" to restore the lost window (you only have to use the list once, after that, once you know the window name, you can make a command in Personal Menu to run as root: "debian wmctrl -a <window name>") or
(3) use kciconsbox to find and restore your lost windows. This is a GUI frontend for wmctrl.

rabilon 2008-11-17 21:10

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

I think the answer to my own question is the "Toggle Movable Windows" under Settings. This brings back the previous R plot window.

qole 2008-11-17 21:15

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

...erm, that's not a very "clean" solution... you're basically restarting the window manager to restore your windows....

rabilon 2008-11-19 21:22

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

That may be so, but it's easy - a lot easier than the other methods that were suggested. There were other problems trying to run R in the LXDE desktop.

Regardless, I have to say that I'm amazed how well R works using Easy Debian on the N810. It's great to be able carry R in one's pocket! Thanks so much for making this possible.

Has anybody experienced a tablet crash and reboot while using OpenOffice?

Twice in a row, I experienced the above when I pressed a key on my iGo to reactivate it after I had stepped away from my tablet for a bit; I was working on a spreadsheet. Basically, the tablet locks up, the light around the d-pad starts blinking and the tablet reboots.

qole 2008-11-19 22:52

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!

rabilon: you might want to try the kciconsbox app for the easiest method of finding lost windows that doesn't involve restarting your window manager.

hordeman: I've had my whole hildon-desktop crash on me while using my iGo, usually pairing and unpairing. There is definitely something a bit unstable and wonky in the bluetooth-keyboard area of the tablet. Never had a total tablet reboot though. Might be something in OpenOffice...
