What about a goldfish jumping from a bowl? Make it a simple pencil image and it could look stunning but makes a point about 'openess'....

....until it hits the deck and suffocates....d'oh

kinda goes with the Orangeness of the forum too :)

I think technically that logo is a gecko though. I think something stylized and vectorized and from a different angle and orange would be distinct enough. Someone with more time and graphic skills should try to extend this idea a little, i think.

i would say maybe the newts head as side angle view arching up through the orange e of the maemo text or maybe have a bottom view with the maemo text like 'in' the orange and black belly pattern.

I'll draw one up.

Maemo is an OS and thus needs an OS-tan. :D

Oh, I saw just in google search blurb that its name was Geeko, so I just assumed it was a gecko, but yes you are right it is a chameleon after i read more. That was confusing :)

Re: Maemo (or maemo.org?) mascot proposal

FYI, I just sent this to the community email list:

There's been a lot of talk on this subject but little or no action, so I decided to start now and maybe beg forgiveness later.

Toni Nikkanen has graciously agreed to allow use of his photos from the Maemo Summit 2009, so for the sake of theming and continuity I have extended the theme on the maemo.org community flyer (http://maemo-daemons.org/maemo-org_c...er2_Maemo5.pdf) to products like tee shirts, mugs, et al.

You can view a mockup of a maemo.org storefront here: http://www.cafepress.com/cynicalsigns/7050511

Some things to keep in mind:
  • Nothing shown is absolutely final. I am still incorporating feedback on the flyer, and discussing photos with Toni... as well as experimenting on cafepress.
  • There is no final decision on a store provider. I am using cafepress for example only. Zazzle is another alternative, as is a community-run custom store. For now cafepress works well for proof-of-concept.
  • Members are welcome to order from the prototype store, but I offer no guarantees of product quality. Any money made will first help defray my store costs ($7 USD per month) and then go into a fund for maemo.org outreach activities (flyer materials, etc) which I am currently paying out of my own pocket.
  • I am awaiting thoughts from maemo.org/Nokia employees and the council on the best solution for this need going forward. That includes store accounts, paypal, etc. Hello people!
  • Discussion on a maemo.org mascot continues (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=28965) 7 months after inception. That's just crazy. There was a suggestion to base it off a Finnish newt (natural orange and black coloration) and personally I think that's a winner. I will create a design that follows the "ae" of the text logo and float it for consideration..
In summary, enough chat, time for work. I don't mind doing it at all; I love this stuff. And if anyone takes issue with what I do, let the flames commence-- but be prepared to offer a solid alternative otherwise I'm deaf. ;)

Initially, when SuSE was still German, they used to call the mascot Kröte (Toad). But it's really a chameleon.

Something I threw together tonight, could use a little refinement maybe:

http://maemo-daemons.org/maemo_newt1.png

Overlaid on "ae" of mamo.org to show how it loosely follows.

Edit: this is the female depiction of the Great Crested Newt. I wanted to keep it simple and the male's crest just adds too much.

Salmon are known for being endangered in a shrinking environment. So that's also appropriate :)

I can't draw, but how about a prairie dog? They are friendly and gregarious and cute and communicative. I picture one having climbed up out of its hole, standing on two legs and eagerly looking at the world beyond.

I'm at the point where I don't care if it's a two-headed tumbleweed-- SOMEthing needs to be selected one way or another, or I'm just gonna stick an orange blob on graphics and call it the maemo.org tribble.

Re: Maemo (or maemo.org?) mascot proposal

A tribble would be perfect given how unexpected the proliferation on n900 was. Nokia were caught unprepared like a hold full of quadrotriticale! And n900 purrs, too... not sure about earlier maemos though.

That wasn't the response you wanted, was it Tex. :(

My amazing art skills in play: the maemo.org tribble, just for you!

http://revdkathy.tumblr.com/post/370...ot-should-be-a

(I like the philosophy of a critter that doesn't actually know which genus it falls into... is it a phone? a tablet? no.. it a platypus!)

I really like the orange/black colors of the newt photo previously posted.
Here is some images from google images:

But I cant get it off my mind that I have might seen excatly newt like this used somewhere else with logo/trademark.

I disagree. I don't think we need a mascot at all. While an interesting diversion to waste time on, nothing I've seen here has changed my opinion that it's not really ideal for maemo.org.

They use a salamander which sort of looks like a newt.

Just for that you're now mascot. :p

Seriously, it's not about a need-- but based on this thread, there seems to be a big desire.

People like identification symbols, more so than words.

(oh, and the post you quoted was entirely facetious)

Well, if platypus is a no go, I vote we replace the A part of AE with a armadillo lizard, they are somewhat orange and have a natural tendency to roll into the shape of the A, though someone cold be creative and make it look more lettery. Or just use the Newt, though the whole crawling lizard thing is pretty popular, and SoBe(Pepsico) could get mad even if we are using an Amphibian instead of a reptile.

Oh My! A Maemo-coloured Ouroboros! That's amazing.

Can we use him, please - associations of alchemy, gnosticism (secret knowledge) and the cyclical nature of a world that is for ever reinventing itself. I think he's gorgous. Would he make a good pet? And perfect!

Ok, played around with the armadillo lizard and made several variations. Even showed what the logo could look like with him in it. ;) Not that I expect that would actually be used.

Anyway it was a fun exercise and if nothing else keeps the graphic skills current.

Why not go the whole hog (or Armadillo) and get Rovio to update the graphics in Bounce Evolution to use the critter instead of a rolling ball!

Re: Maemo (or maemo.org?) mascot proposal

this idea just popped in my mind while reading this. since the penguin is already the symbol of linux, then we can just modify it a bit orange-y motif to suit maemo which is a form of linux with a cocky attitude...

one hand holds a spear with a pierced head of an android

the other hand is crushing an apple

a spotlight can be seen on the floor with the 4 colors of windows beneath the penguin's feet symbolizing winmo is beneath maemo

what do you guys think? feel free to draw what i imagined...=)

Ether way up ( H = Ears or Legs ) I'm sure one of you graphics geniuses could come up with something with maybe the a and e of maemo.

There have been so many, we may need to do this in stages. Start at a top level and break it down.

Gonna be a lot of work... I'll try to get on it later today or tomorrow.

Note: no matter the outcome, there is no guarantee there will be an official maemo.org mascot. There is some very vocal opposition to the very idea... :(

Do you think we should start by asking the prior question; so we want a mascot?

Personally, I do. And I want that little ourobos to be it. But I'm only one voice. If the majority don't want a mascot at all, then we're rather wasting our breath here.

I totally agree! But I take full credit for the idea! With my name on every logo and required on any any remakes!

Hi couple of suggestions from me...

GIBBON

One of the most agile mammals. Small and mobile monkey with quite recognizeable face.

Would be rather easy to do nise graphics of that face in my opinion.

http://www.a-p-e-s.org/img/gibbonLg.jpg

"...Gibbons are masters of their primary mode of locomotion, brachiation, swinging from branch to branch for distances of up to 15 m (50 ft), at speeds as high as 56 km/h (35 mph). They can also make leaps of up to 8 m (26 ft), and walk bipedally with their arms raised for balance. They are the fastest and most agile of all tree-dwelling, non-flying mammals..."
