after updating for 1.0.4-5 to 1.0.5 I get this error message :

any idea?

Nope. Been Google Voice since the day I could switch from GrandCentral.

I think that something is wrong with the 1.0.5 coz when I turned back to 1.0.4-5 it started working fine again.

Epage is usually no around on Sunday. But He usually is on it on Mondays. I would say either re-install the last version(thats what I did) and/or wait for epage tomorrow. I am interested in the new changes, but haven't been able to see them until he fixes it.

I just received the exact same error when I open up DC. I tried to click the new login option and just returns the error message again. It was working beautifully all day today and yesterday.

Re: Dialcentral 1.0

Ok, back. I found the issue. I thought I had tested login by credentials before the removal of GrandCentral but I guess not. When I added GoogleVoice support I added features to the "login dialog with combo box" which I didn't put back into the plain login dialog. In dropping GrandCentral support I switched back to the regular dialog and you all hit the issue with the missing feature. I'll try and get a new build out tonight.

EDIT: I just put 1.0.5-1 in the extras-devel

Yeah, the code is common between messages and recent so I was trying to be lazy in not bringing it back for the recent tab only.

Visually I thought it looked better having them be consistently sized. What are your thoughts, ignoring things not fitting?

I think contacts were sized the same as Recent. Is there a reason one should be bigger than the other?

I did not include the sound. The example is meant "as is" just show how one would write a custom notifier. I confirmed that I was able to get a custom notifier to run. I included the sound code as taken from gv_notifier as a starting point for people. My plan is to not support those things out of the box but for it to be an advanced user community thing.

Epage listed it here:

UI Tweaks
  • Contacts Tab now remember what was the last addressbook you viewed
  • More thumb scrollbars are present
  • Bigger items on Recent/Contacts/Messages tabs
  • Word wrap on Messages
  • Bigger message dialogs
  • Message dialogs autoscroll the conversation to the bottom
  • Notification time is now more thumb editable
  • Dialpad is usable sooner
  • I don't remember what else

Bug Fixes
  • Dialpad: previous number when sending an SMS is now cleared
  • Dialpad: SMS button is now grayed out when not logged in
  • I don't remember what else

Also, GrandCentral support is completely removed. I can't really test it because my account is converted and I didn't receive complaints when I had previously asked about removing it.

For advanced use: I also provided an example alternative notifier. "/usr/lib/dialcentral/example_custom_notifier.py"

Things you'll notice... he made fonts bigger and easier to read, text is all wrapped in the window so you don't have to double click on it to read everything. Also other things are more finger friendly.

Epage, I like the changes. It's making everything easier to use. I am not sure if this is the place to mention a bug? I'll mention it but please tell me where to list it in the future...
Sometimes, if I double click on a SMS conversation to reply, everything works fine...but when I go to double click on another SMS conversation to reply, nothing happens(sometimes) the conversation just turns blue. Things won't change in SMS messages until I close the app and re-open it, then it works fine again.
Again I've used this app all day and it has only done this 3 times.

Hmm I have a question about the notifier. Is it still running every X user interval even if the tablet is offline?

Edit: noticed another bug/issue. I changed the notification time from 10 to 30 minutes and now the notifications checkbox won't stay checked. It'll usually uncheck itself within a few seconds of being checked.

Drat. Ever since I made it easer to login by remembering the users credentials I became lazy about testing the login process.

This time I actually tested it. I just pushed things to the autobuilder

I thought I was assured gv_notifier wasn't. I tried to copy the settings. The feedback I've gotten is that it seems to. I'm unsure what to do about this.

What that means is there was an error setting the new alarm settings. I'll try playing a bit with 30 minutes alarm times tonight to see if I can reproduce. Otherwise it'd be nice to have the debug prints. I hope to soon add actual logging so it'll be easier for everyone to give these to me.

I think contacts were sized the same as Recent. Is there a reason one should be bigger than the other?

Personally I did not mind the inconsistencies with the font sizes. To me, the name was the thing I wanted to see large. The missed/received and the time were consistent, small, and visible but the name/number took up most of the space and I thought looked quite nice.

You are correct, the recent and contacts are the same font size. The size really is not terrible, but I do prefer having a larger font. I think its easier on the eyes and thumbs. I'd rather have to scroll more than to take the extra split second to worry about accuracy with my fingers. Again being a little picky.

I'm guessing checkbox is grayed out so you can't select to turn it on? If so this is because of a larger issue I've noticed in your screenshots and I have posted about asking for helping in debugging this issue. Dialcentral is not Hildonizing for you. So far I have received no complaints from other users of this behavior which makes me even more curious as to whats going on.

Yes, that fixed it (upgrade to latest).

New opinions:

Recent tab, the names are cut off
Messages: I like the size of it
Contacts: Good size, maybe slightly bigger? Or have an option for font control on each tab? I find it perfect but as others have said it might be to small for them.

Re: Dialcentral 1.0

Hi Epage.

I tried messing with the code a bit to give you an idea of what I think is "thumb friendly" and also would like for other users to comment on it. Here is my contacts tab. I stretched the rows to the "optomial" size. I was unable to figure out how to change the font to fit the scale, but you get the idea.

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/4...shot00y.th.png

The size can be accomplished in the recent view as well. Simply shorten down the time like you had before, leave them small, and the contact name large. Instead of showing the number, clicking the name brings up the contact info with all numbers available. (probably a pain to do)

One other idea. In messages view, when you click on a message to reply, we are forced to click the sms button in order to start replying to the message. Can you instead have the reply window there to eliminate a step. You can leave the sms button there in order to send the sms, and include a Call button or something similar incase you wanted to simply call the user. I have also taken the liberty in doing a mock up of how I envision the app as it moves forward :) photo support linked to the saved address book would be such a spiffy touch

I've done some refinements, I hope it helps.

As for the name being on the recent list: I have a lot of calls not in my address book and I like to have the number to check for uniqueness in the call and the location to jog my memory as to who it is. If I can specialize on known contacts and unknown to display number, it wouldn't do much good because the unknown would still be wide.

I did not think about that. Most of my calls are from know people. Is there a way to compromise? Name for the known users else return the number of the unknown callers? I'm sure it would require a lot of tinkering on your part to pull it off. What do you think of the pics in the contact/messages frame :)

Feel free to message me anytime with a question or if you want me to try things out I surely will.

As I mentioned, with unknown people its good to have both location and number. With both of those, the column(s) already become big enough that you might as well use number on everyone.

Pics, if not already a feature request would be another decent one. It would not fit in well within the original focus of being a touch friendly way to quickly initiate calls. I am doing some investigation to break away from that though. Don't expect much though :(

Re: Dialcentral 1.0

Any progress is good progress. With the unknown callers, I had it envisioned as seeing the number in your main recent list, then if you are still unsure, clicking on it gave you the location/number ect. Not really a big deal as I do not find myself clicking on names much from the recent list, just tossing some ideas and seeing what sticks.

I was previously using the GV_notifier stand alone app before you implemented it. I am now missing my sound notifications much more than I previously thought I would. Is there an easy way for us users to add a little code and sound file to bring it back and work with the way you are now looking for messages?

You mentioned looking into another way of doing things. I'm curious as to what you envision dialcentral to evolve into and finally become.

Thanks for taking our comments and turning them into reality. I think I'm having more fun giving feed back and ideas than actually using the app ;)

I can't remember when I posted this but I implemented a feature for advanced users to do this. In the "~/.dialcentral/settings.ini" file under the "[alarm]" section is a "notifier = " field. You can set that to a custom app that will be ran every N minutes. I provide a custom notifier as an example in "/usr/lib/dialcentral/example_custom_notifier.py". From my testing it appears to run. It includes the gv_notifier sound code but it is there for example purposes only, I have not tested it.
