i have installed ur modified desktop & above mentioned hildon home .i got all 9 screens but i am unable to change images of other desktops with hildon home.in hildon home i can only see 5 desktop in manage views.

how to change backgrounds of other desktops

Desktop+ appkication is not in english .so i cant understand it

Matan said he was making a modified hildon desktop for 1.3, perhaps that is it. I think I installed it based on that assumption. I did it so automatically I wasn't paying attention!

That was 3.2, which is what i'm running and my desktop+ is working perfectly. I noticed 3.3 last night but haven't updated because i don't know what it's for.

No sorry what i meant was the one Matan announced, and that I installed a few hours after, was 3.2. 3.3 popped up yesterday

It's pretty easy, download desktopplus from devels, and you need matan's modified hildon desktop from matan's repo.

You then open menu, find desktop+, click the number of desktops you want and that's it. For backgrounds, dump the image you want in .backgrounds, do it in filebox or SSH

ok so i have desktop plus and matan modified hildon desktop 3.3 then i placed the images for 6 desktops in desktopplus map naming them 1.png 2.png till 6.png i get the 6 desktops on my phone but 2 of them are still black. did i forget to install something or did something wrong?

I didn't try desktop+
But the real background images are in /home/user/.backgrounds/
Put the images you want there
They're called background-1.png, background-2.png...

This is the way i found to change backgrounds of 5 to 9 desktops

Quick Steps:
1)Download WinSCP & Install It (in your PC)
http://winscp.net/eng/index.php


2)Download OpenSSH Server & Install It (in your N900)
you can find it in application manager on ur n900

type easy password when it ask password in the installation Example:123456

3)Open X-Terminal, type "root" then Next "ifconfig"
Check your Phone's IP Address (in your N900)

its is next to the line WLAN0: inet addr: 192.168.214.1 (it should be like this) Note down this

4)Open WinSCP & Enter: (In your PC)


Hostname: enter your phone's IP address u get from ifconfig example: "192.168.214.1" without qutes

Port: 22
User name: "root"
Password: The OpenSSH Installation Pass: eg "123456"
Private key: LEAVE IT BLANK
Protocol: SFTP, Tick SCP Fallback
LOGIN....



5.find home/ user / .backgrounds

u can see backgrounds-1.png to backgrounds-4.png

drop ur wallpapers there make sure that they are in .png format

and rename them to background-5.png , background-6.png , background-7.png , background-8.png , background-9.png

exit winscp

now you can see wallpapers on ur desktops



if u want to do it in ur phone install filebox in ur n900 in settings mark show hidden files.u can see .backgrounds folder now.& add ur background there like i said in step no:5

HI, I was able to add 2 new extra desktop using this method with ease. There is a big problem with this method though [just hope this is not the only way to do it]. If you take out the battery of your n900 and let the phone reset it's settings.

It will automatically remove the extra desktop you added. Is there anyway to, create a profile which can then be set to default(holding the information of the extra desktops) and will be automatically loaded even when the phone is rebooted completely?

This may have been covered already in this thread, but I'll put it in again. A solidly working way of adding wallpapers to each of the 9 home screens is to add the wallpaper files to
/home/user/.backgrounds
and name them as background-1, background-2, etc. One for each screen.
Whenever you set a wallpaper through other means, it seems to me that the file gets copied to this folder and named "background-[number]".

I too saw the demonstration video of 9 home screens and vertical/diagonal swipes, yet ended up disappointed when I found out that it was a fake.

Nevertheless, I made a set of 9 simple black background .pngs, each with a small grid on the top right corner indicating which screen of the 3x3 you are in, mainly to provide an idea on which way to swipe to get to where you are going to. It's not that useful now, but I'll keep dreaming :>

The top right corner of home screens isn't used by anything, right? Even widgets can't be put there?

With the two screen selector widgets the 3x3 grid is much less necessary. Would still be a nice option to have of course.

I'm facing a major problem here. I was priviously able to add up to 7 dekstops. I used WinSCP to do the job. Anyway as i stated in my privious reply, Where i had removed the battery to my phone which in turn reseted all the settings in my phone. When that happend, the extra desktops were gone.

Now i cant re-add them, for some reason they just wont appear after i have executed the command. I also redownloaded the costome hildon once again and tried it. Unfortunately the outcome was the same. No extra desktops.

Can you or anyone here help me fix this problem?

Are you using the programs that solve this sort of problem? As I recall, they are called Desktop+ and Desktop-switcher.

EDIT: Have 9 now but for some reason can only select up to 5 in manage views. Anyway I want 9 so that's fine. WIsh there was an easy way to do this. Thought there was a desktop plus app. What happened to it?


Agghh! I had 9 desktops before but just got a new N900. Can someone point me how to get 9 desktops? I have spent like an hour looking for the answer without success. Is there a wiki or something? I know I have the modfied desktop because I can use the arrow keys to change screens. I have entered this command in xterminal but it made no difference:

gconftool-s / t apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/9/bg-image-string "/ path / to / background.jpg"
gconftool-s / apps / osso / hildon-desktop / views / active-t list - list-type int [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9]

Okay for some reason I can have 5 screens now but no more. I also replicated command gconftool-s / t apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/9/bg-image-string "/ path / to / background.jpg" replacing 9 with 5, 6,7,8 each time but still only 5 screens.

Moving on. I can help you fix your background problem just follow this steps.

1. Download and install WinSCP. http://sourceforge.net/projects/wins...p.exe/download
2. Download and install the Following:

• Download Mad Developer from app manager (make sure you have extras and extras-testing on)

• Download Open SSH Server and client and also SSH Status and Switcher from (app manager)
  NOTE: Remember the password you enter when installing SSH server or Mad Developer.
  • If you forget your password do the following steps.
    
    
    Quote:

    Open xTerminal sudo gainroot (assuming you have installed rootsh) passwd

    Now enter your new password [You wont be able see what you are typing. So make it short and easy to remember]
    

3. Moving on. After you have done all the installing, run WinSCP and Mad Developer on your phone (make sure your Wifi is turn on in your phone, and you are connected to the Internet.).

4. Now run MadDeveloper it should show you, your phone ip.

5. Make sure you turn on your SSH server. Do that by tapping on the status applet on top (just tap the battery icon) and you should see "SSH Server OFF". Tap it and it should turn on.

6. Now when you have turned on your SSH server. Go back to Mad developer and tap on the Developer Password button.Remember this is importent. Remember do not press cancel. Just let it run. Now you can put your phone a side.

7. Go back to Win SCP and you sould see the first text box called "host name". Now just enter the ip (wLan0) you see in your mad developer in to that box. Eg. 192.168.0.100.

8.To the password field. Enter the following :
9. Hit login. Now an empty field will open up. If successful it will ask you for the SSH password which you created in step 5 while installing.

10. Once you have excesses to your phone go to the parent folder <root> and go to into following folders:

• 11. You should see :
  • background-1.png
  • background-2.png
  • background-3.png
  • background-4.png
  
  12. You will have add more background pic into the folder according to how many desktops you add.
  
  Quote:

  Make sure that the name and format is the same. Eg. background-1.png background-2.png background-3.png background-4.png background-5.png background-6.png I recommend that you use the same background pic. Some thing like the one in Humanity Theme. That way you do not have to access you phone every time you want to make changes.

13. You are Done.

let me first tell u dat dis is a awesome project n u r a genius, congragulations for such a great project, well i am writing because i have 9 active desktops on my n900, i got my phone in august and aftr dat i was using 9 desktop on my phone but at dat time i installed the older version of hildon desktop and hildon home and at that time i was able to see only 5 desktops out of 9 in manage views then after the release of PR1.3 i updated my phone where i lost the 9 desktops and i went through this thread again and got the nine desktops back as i installed latest version(i believe) of hildon home and desktops but then i installed couple of softwares like DOSBOX and shake and surf and then i realised that i lost my extra 5 desktops, so i went to your repository and did the coding to get the nine desktops and got them back but my concern is now i am not getng 9 desktops in my manage views so can you please help me here to get that back in manage views. also when everythng was working fine with 9 desktops my phone use to freeze and use to get message as "hildon-home has stopped responding, close the application?" jus mentioned it thinking if dt wud be of any help for you, would appreciate your response....also i forgot to mention I am n newbee to linux an not at all aware of much coding

dear bro most easy way to set wallpaper to extra desktop screen............

download cuteExplore

then open this cuteexplore

click on top where cuteexplore is showing
drop down menu select show hidden files...........

then go to
/home/user/.backgrounds

paste in this folder which wallpaper r u applying......

nd rename those wallpaper to background-5.png
background-6.png
background-7.png
background-8.png
background-9.png

hope ur desktop has been change....

For me to have my 6 Desktops, I used;

1- Modified hildon home from Matan
2- Homescreen selector widget

With the 2nd I managed to put the check-mark on the rest of the screens I want.
Also if it happens to not appear on Manage views. Then I reinstall the hildon-home .deb 0.3.66 , which I know is outdated but when I reinstall it, I can view on "Manage View" the rest of the desktop, and check them.

EDIT: I did a Reboot after reinstalling the hildon-home. Then the other desktops appeared on Manage view.

"Unable to download 'desktopplus'.
Application package not found"

Well i managed to extract the zip file using unzip command line. Nwo when i try to install it, oddly nothing happens. After the progress bar reaches 100% in the preparing install segment, then nothing happens. It does not get installed.
