Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

Few questions:

How will I prevent skype from importing the contacts to the contacts on N9, it seems that the whole software has to be disabled in order to prevent this to happen? Anybody found a setting for not migrating the contacts?

Is it possible to import contacts to N9 via CSV file?

There seems to be openvpn packages in the community repo. I haven't tested them, so no idea if they work tho.

Battery: One day at work with one short conversation. Playing music (aac and mp3) over bluetooth (a2dp) all of the time (screen off, default music player). Connected to 3G and downloading a 420Mb file (wget in terminal) left me at around 50%

For some stupid reason the web browser didn't want do download a zip file, so I had to use wget. Does anyone know how to paste text into xterm?

The first link has already been discussed at some length on TMO. Whatever flaws the N9 has, it's pretty clear that this reviewer has no clue what he's talking about (see the comments below the article if you don't see any problem with the review).

Hello everyone.
I really hope someone can help me. I just bought my Nokia N9 yesterday, but today the phone is completely dead, i just woke up, and the phone wouldn't turn on. The phone is charged, and the battery should be full, but still i get no reactions what so ever when i try to turn on the phone. No vibrations, no sound, nothing. I've tried almost everything. Hope someone can help me.

Talk to customer care, if it doesn't turn on, it's a manufacturer defect. They should replace it for you.

Big thanks for this. Got it working.

Noticed that when adding a new calendar entry you cannot choose the calendar where it goes. It always goes to the default calendar. This is kind of annoying.

Stock Android can't due to missing kernel module.

aka. does it contain the tun module (tun.ko)

Here's the thread I was trying to recall, maybe it'll be rectified for PR1.1 (which is coming very soon).
According to that thread it's def. ready to go in the kernel
http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=4226&page=2
I doubt it'll be something whereby have we to switch to open-mode 1st, simply to use.

I haven't been able to successfully install any app from the mymeego site- have tried opera mobile, firefox and a couple of others. They either said “cant install package” or took me to a page where all i saw were random numbers and letters, but strangely the progress bar at the top of the browser looked like it was downloading something. it got stuck though and i had to shut browser down. I will try installing via PC...hopefully it works! By the way, can firefox play flash videos?

Who currently updates the software for your N900? Right, the community. The N900's OS was dead when the device came out, but did that really matter, in the end?

Regarding applications: the majority will be written in Qt/QML anyway, so the range of targeted devices, for a developer, is bigger than just the N9.

I am used to all kind of silly arguments, but this blindly repeated (and never analysed) OS story is the worst.

We have a half-qwerty layout as an example at least:
https://gitorious.org/maliit/maliit-...alf_qwerty.xml

Using cycle keys, you can also do proper T9.

It may be a dud, but just a reminder: if battery is totally drained, the phone
appears totally dead for several minutes when attached to charger. After that
pressing on button should show something.

Battery can get totally drained by SOME USB hubs, if you leave phone connected,
and hub is connected to hibernating PC -- even with hubs that have own power.

Mine has since the last few days only gone up to 96%. When I first got it and charged it, it went up to 100% but now it's every time just 96.

I assume it's a battery calibration issue (i.e, the battery is actually at 100% but the gauge show's it wrong).

No, I wouldn't worry. Battery level cannot be measured, but are rather estimated, from measurement of voltage and internal resistance (itself derived from the measurement of the voltage drop as a function of the current drown from the battery...). Then those measured are compared with average values for this type of battery...

So this is no exact science, and those parameters (full charge voltage and internal resistance) can vary quite a lot from one battery to another, so that the battery gauge will sometimes give you this kind of numbers, even when the battery is fully charged.

i had problems with that also at start, but after a few attempts you'll figure it out and then you'll notice that it's actually a very well planned cover.

hello there...the stock browser does not allow certain things to be downloaded especially if the file type is different then the os.
this is what happened to me.
so first of all enable the option to allow non store apps in settings.
then download the file to a pc and transfer it to the phone.
fennec nor opera supports flash...and both are buggy in my opinion..but u r free to try...opera has to be installed through x terminal after enabling developer mode...fennec can be install without much hastle....will find a link for it and post it here...

I've got a question for N9/50 owners. Is it possible to do x-forwarding as a server? i.e. to show Harmattan apps on a linux box? N900 lacked this functionality.

Also does anyone know how multitouch is implemented? Standard multiple xinputs as in gnome or some closed source trickery?

There is a flash player "app" that the browser (IIRC) auto-switches to.
But no signed/licensed NPAPI plugin for Fennec (firefox mobile).

Oh and another question. How loud is the loudspeaker? Because I used a GS for some days now and I missed each and every call. Never happened with any of N95, N900, i8910 but they all have stereo speakers on the side of the phone (that don't get muffled in the pocket)

Where is the N9 speaker? How does the loudness compare to the N900?

It's not that great from everything I've read/watched...
I may be wrong but IIRC there's only one spkr at the base.

Somewhere here this guy did a comparo between it & the SGSII.
Some English reviews but mostly Arabic (spkr review was only Arabic I think) unfortunately.
SGSII clearly had way better volume, not sure about overall SQ.
That's a bit more subjective, esp. in an overly simplistic test like his.

Audio via headphones is much more competitive (if not superior) I suspect.
As evidenced by this review someone did in the sub-forum wk or so back.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

I really don't care about sound quality on external speakers, I find it annoying to listen to music even on laptop speakers, let alone a phone's (except if it has a magic tech that makes it sound like a hifi), but I care very much about the loudness, as I don't want to miss calls (or worse alarm clocks).

OT, even as I never use them for listening anything, for the sake of conversation, the 5800 has probably the best quality loudspeakers. It makes the N900 sound ridiculous.

Thanks for your help. Yes, it worked fine when I transferred the file from a computer.

Another question - is there an app/way to open zip files on the N9? I can't seem to find an app to do it... Also, I have downloaded Cutetube, but can't seem to download/save any videos from youtube. It worked on my N900 nicely. I've tried several videos, not one of them downloaded - they didn't even start to download, but said "failed" immediately. Might it be something to do with my settings???
Thanks in advance

I am pretty sure I could yesterday view xlsx files, but not edit. Currently I can't even view but I guess it is because of my installing/uninstalling applications while trying to get office documents work more properly...

First, I found a youtube video that indicates someone having more or less functioning office suite at n950:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB9f48XxoX0

Then, a bit more googling, found something that looks very much like installation packages for calligra:

http://harmattan-dev.nokia.com/pool/...ee/c/calligra/

Tried to install/uninstall some of those (at which point probably lost the capability to even read office docs). Every package seems to install nicely, but at this point I get stuck. I have no idea how to run these packages.

Code:

dpkg -s calligrameego
gives following:

Code:

Package: calligrameego

Status: install ok installed

Priority: extra

Section: libs

Installed-Size: 29464

Maintainer: Lassi Nieminen <lass******inen@nokia.com>

Architecture: armel

Source: calligra

Version: 2.3.72-5+0m6

Replaces: kofficemeego

Provides: kofficemeego

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.3.0), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.12.0), libgsf-1, libqt4-dbus (>= 4.7.4~git20110517), libqt4-phonon (>= 4.7.4~git20110517), libqt4-sql (>= 4.7.4~git20110517), libqt4-svg (>= 4.7.4~git20110517), libqt4-xml (>= 4.7.4~git20110517), libqtcore4 (>= 4.7.4~git20110517), libqtgui4 (>= 4.7.4~git20110517), libstdc++6 (>= 4.4.0), zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4), libkok

Conflicts: kofficemeego

Description: Office application suite for meego.

 Calligra main libraries.

But trying to run calligrameego (or a couple of intuitive variants, root or no root), results to

Code:

-/bin/sh: calligrameego: not found
So, does anybody have any ideas how to proceed?

Then I started to think that maybe there is a vnc and/or nx client to log into my home computer and work with the documents there . Apparently no luck with those, but x forwarding seems to work nicely out of the box, so I actually can have a working gnumeric worksheet at the screen of my N9, even if not that elegantly. Only "minor" inconvenience is that I haven't been able to figure out how to open virtual keyboard for the x session. Does anyone happen to know any solution to this short of building a x-forward app?

Search for the different file managers on the Nokia Store, there should be at least 4 to try by now.
