Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

Just wanted to say Thanks for this guide. I bought an N9 through telcel in Mexico and already knew that it wouldn't be updated beyond PR1.1, so I followed the guide and updated to PR1.2 and it worked beautifully. Even auto-updated when PR1.3 came around for my variant. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

you have to only flash main.bin (look first post) as it written there. No deleting home.
If you flash emmc.bin also home will be restored. In Home you have your personal information.

But every flash is better to make a backup and safed in one PC

COMPREHENSIVE FIRMWARE FLASHING GUIDE
for the NOKIA N9

"Reflashing" your phone with the original Nokia firmware can solve many problems and is necessary in a number of circumstances, but a lack of documentation has resulted in a lot of misinformation and confusion. Hopefully, this guide will demystify the process and help bring ailing N9s back to life. :)

Warning: Improperly using flasher could damage your phone and void your warranty. However, following these directions precisely to use flasher to install "stock" Nokia firmware images is quite safe, and can fix problems that would otherwise require warranty service. In any case, flashing your phone is at your own risk. Do not use this guide if you aren't somewhat familiar with the command prompt/terminal on your operating system. While many users have experienced success with this process, it is not officially recommended by Nokia in any way. Read the entire guide before you start.

Warning: Installation of generic firmware images on certain carrier-branded phones seems to be blocked - if you're currently running a carrier-branded firmware image, it's recommended to wait for more details.

Warning: Do not modify the product code of your N9. Doing so is not necessary to replace your phone's firmware, and some programs for changing the code could cause problems (namely NSS Pro).

SELECTING A FIRMWARE IMAGE (N9 SPECIFIC)

Main firmware images for the Nokia N9 are divided up into "variants" by regions of the world. Except for carrier-branded variants and the 003 (China) firmware, these images are more or less the same.

  • 001 - Europe (1), Latin/South America, South Africa
  • 003 - China
  • 005 - Asia/Pacific (incl. Australia/New Zealand, excl. China)
  • 006 - Middle East
  • 009 - Europe (2)
  • 2xx, 3xx, 4xx - "Country Variant" and carrier-branded images

Downgrades of firmware are normally blocked by the phone. Whether something is a "downgrade" is determined by comparing the entire version strings of the old and new firmware versions, which include the variant code, from left to right. As a result, the variant code must be the same or higher unless you also upgrade the firmware version at the same time. For example:

  • PR 1.1 variant 009 to PR 1.1 variant 003: Blocked
  • PR 1.1 variant 003 to PR 1.1 variant 009: Allowed
  • PR 1.1 variant 009 to PR 1.2 variant 001: Allowed
  • PR 1.1.1 variant 006 to PR 1.2 variant 005: Allowed
  • PR 1.2 variant 001 to PR 1.1 variant 001: Blocked

so if i from pr1.2 variant 263 to pr1.3 variant 005 allowed?
if cant allow so can i change the product code from nss?

is pr1.2 263 variant a Chinese variant ? If so then after flashing pr1.3 you might need cmt from the Chinese variant ... Its not advisable to change product codes...

PREPARE TO FLASH

If your phone has a low battery charge (less than 50%), plug it in and let it charge for a while. Then, make sure your phone is disconnected from any USB cables (including USB chargers). Power off the phone.

Go to the Flasher download site and download/install the version for your operating system (WinFlasher_3.12.1.exe, MacFlasher_3.12.1.dmg, flasher_3.12.1_i386.deb, or flasher_3.12.1_amd64.deb). Do not use Flasher 3.5 - it isn't compatible with the N9/N950. You can skip this step if you've already installed Flasher.

On Windows, open a Command Prompt with Administrator permissions (with UAC, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator). On Linux, open a root shell (sudo -i/su). Change to the directory containing the firmware images you downloaded.

On Windows, run set PATH="C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher;%PATH%" in order to add Flasher to the system path.

FLASH THE PHONE

Run the following command, then connect the phone to your PC.

Code:

flasher -i
The current firmware version of your phone should appear. It is now time to flash.

Use the following list to determine which of the steps below you need to use to accomplish a particular task:

  • Upgrade operating system: Replace operating system
  • Recover from damaged OS install: Replace operating system
  • "Unbrick" phone: Replace operating system or Comprehensive reset
  • Reset back to a "clean slate": Comprehensive reset
  • De-brand phone: Comprehensive reset
  • Prepare for enabling open mode: Comprehensive reset
  • Disable open mode: Comprehensive reset
  • Prepare for selling, recycling, or destroying phone: Zeroize device
  • Clear data before returning phone for warranty service (if possible): Zeroize device
  • Reset device lock code: Zeroize device

Note that you should replace main.bin and emmc.bin in the commands with the actual names of the image files you are flashing.

Comprehensive reset (destroys user data)

The following commands will remove all data from your phone and restore it to factory state. The provided content files (sample music, wallpaper, etc.) will be restored.

Code:

flasher -f -F main.bin
flasher -f -F main.bin -F emmc.bin --flash-only=mmc

Have few doubts since am using all this for the first time... Early apologies for stupid questions...

1. Do I need to change location for downloaded files to Flasher..!?

2. Is it possible to change both downloaded file names to main.bin and emmc.bin !?

3. In Windows 7, cmd.., which directory should I be in while processing all flashing commands..!!?

4. Comprehensive reset is the right method for factory reset, right..!? Have no intention to change my product code. Just need my phone to be factory restored. Everything erased including app data, contacts etc.. All personal data backed up.. (I am flashing since I have problems with missing shortcuts issue in menu, no twitter notification and few glitches here and there...).

Thank you..

Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

PR 1.3 N9 Mac OS quick help:

Thought it might be helpful to quickly post how to flash firmware and eMMC in N9 using Mac OS X since it took me a little while to figure out how to do both in one shot.

1) Get Flasher 3.5 for Mac (info in 1st post)

2) Get LATEST firmware image and eMMC image from Navifirm and store them on your desktop. Make sure Nokia Care Suit is selected in Navifirm by highlighting the 2nd drop-down menu item in Navifirm window and highlight the 1st item and select Nokia Care Suit.
Watch this youtube video for instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoycnlhBzq0

3) Run Terminal and just type this:
Code:

Flasher -F /Users/"Your User Name"/Desktop/DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM.bin -F /Users/"Your User Name"/Desktop/DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.13-7.LTA_EMMC_LTA.bin -f
Hit enter.

4) Make sure your N9 is off and plug it in

5) Don't disconnect the N9! Wait for update process to finish and then when it does enter
Code:

Flasher -R
it will reboot your N9. You may disconnect once you see your N9 booting up.

Not a requirement, but for uniformity's sake (and so that you won't get confused when you follow the tutorial in the Wiki Page) I would recommend to keep it at default.

Yes.

To whatever directory you chose to save your files needed for flashing (related to your Question #1).

Thank you..

Comprehensive reset is when you "reinstall" the device's "Operating System", as well as "reformat" the huge storage space. So to analogize to a desktop computer, it's like wiping out your hard drive then reinstalling your prefered Operating System.

are you sure you have the exact same error messages? If yes, then its a failure in flash memory that cant be fixed via flashing etc... It is a.hardware issue that Nokia Care must handle.

Hi!

My Nokia N9 has been having a reboot loop. Since there wasn't any valuable data on it, I decided the easyest thing to do would be to flash it.

However, the phone always turns off about a minute into the flashing process.

Any idea what's going on?

Good work!! But.. When I type "flasher -f -F main.bin" my N9 seems not alive.. It couldn't turn it on and charge it.
I solve the problem typing "flasher -F main.bin -f".. Why??

Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

You might have made some mistakes as the commands can be turned around...next time just use flasher -f -F main.bin -R so it reboots after flashing...

Then i figured that it could be a software problem, så first i tried to:

Restore Settings, do the following:

Open “Settings”
Tap “Reset”
Choose “Restore Settings”
Tap “Yes” to confirm the process.

Still got the message "there is something wrong with your sim-card".

then i tried:

To Clear Device, do the following:

Open “Settings”
Tap “Reset”
Choose “Clear Device”
Tap “Yes” to confirm the process.

still got the same message once starting up.

Finally i tried to flash it following the steps in this guide...i used the """""""Flasher -f -F rootfs.bin -F emmc.bin -R"""""""" thing..

The result was this:

PLEASE HELP.....it's driving CRAZY!!!!

Does anyone get a solution for this error?
I have the same, it's seems to coming from the "CMT part" of the flash. I have found a solution to flash only CMT with oldest version but i try to do it with vers 1.3 to 1.2 and 1.1 and it does not work!

Thanks!

Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

Hello Guys.

Just a simple question. I have N9 Black with 16GB with Switzerland Swisscom branding.

I flashed my N9 with MacFlasher with the First Fimware from this Site:

http://www.btusers.com.ar/nan/nokia/...m=40.2012.21.3

I Flashed ROW Black.
Is this correct? Or should i scroll down and Flash Switzerland Firmware.

What is the difference of these two Firmwares?

Are you on pr1.2 currently or pr1.3?

If the former you can flash with ROW Black; if the latter check your pr legacy is it 001; if not then you can't proceed...

Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

Actually i was on PR1.1 and checking for updates it didn't find anything. PR1.3 is OUT and i coudn't recieve it.

Someone told me that my provider (Swisscom) won't push OTA Update. So i was stuck on PR1.1. Then i decided to flash manually to PR1.3

Last week i flashed ROW Firmware PR1.3(i don't know what this means) from the Website above.

Now i see there is also Switzerland Firmware if you scroll down.
My product Code is: 059L6C2.

So i don't know is this ROW Firmware OK for me or should i flash something else.

Stick to ROW Firmware...Its honestly the better option...

Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

Thanks.

Actually this is my Original Version:

059L6C2: N9 RM-696 Swisscom CH Black 16GB V1

For this Product Code there is still no Update for PR1.2 or PR1.3.

If i want to sell it i can still flash back to Original.

If you are doing a fresh flash to pr1.3 its recommended to do a full flash of rootfs+emmc...Make sure you have backed up your data to a PC first...

Re: [HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

Guess i cant install PR1.3

"If you previously upgraded your phone "over the air" (through SSU) and now receive a Downgrade disallowed error when flashing, try flashing an image with a higher variant code. For example, if you experienced the error with variant 001, try using variant 005 instead."

I dont understand what this means! I tried so many fw and always receive the following error. Currently i dont know what to do!

My C.V is PR1.2 only (its from Orange PL but im from Greece) guess this has something to do but i was convinced that i could flash a proper PR1.3 FW cause i read this int the first post:

"Nokia recommends always using the latest firmware image for your phone's product code (printed on the SIM card tray). This is the safest option. However, you may wish to change to a different variant than what shipped with the phone for the following reasons:

Receiving updates sooner - new firmware versions are normally released for the 001 variant first
Removing carrier branding - installing 00x variant firmware makes your subsidized N9 act just like an unlocked one"

what can i do?
