Re: [Announce] Easy Debian for MeeGo Harmattan : now with translucent VKB on PR1.3 !

Summary of 2012 for Easy Debian Harmattan :

- thanks, thanks 2012 times to Qole and Javispedro, for making Easy Debian on Nokia N9 & N950 so useful;

- my blog post "Easy Debian Harmattan for Nokia N9 with translucent virtual keyboard" shows a benchmark against notebooks, where the Nokia N9 scores very well;

- other blog post, "Symbolic computation CAS (Computer Algebra System) for smartphones and tablets" shows how Easy Debian Harmattan has allowed Nokia N9 to use the best of free CAS of desktop OS : wxMaxima/Maxima, IPython Notebook & SymPy.

- the blog post "Scientific Python for computers, tablets and smartphones" shows that Easy Debian Harmattan allows Nokia N9 to run all cited scientific Python softwares from desktop OS : IPython Notebook 0.13, NumPy/MatPlotLib, SymPy (with Plot using PyGlet), etc;

- download statistics of some images (0.5-1.0GB each) which I host, from 08-12/2012 :
* "Scientific version based on Qole's default Easy Debian image", debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2, has approx. 5,500 downloads;
* "Scientific version based on experimental Sulu's Debian wheezy image", debian-wheezy-sulu-Sci.img.ext2, has aprox. 900 downloads;
* "based on experimental Sulu's Debian squeeze image upgraded to wheezy", debian-wheezy-upgrade-estel.img.ext3, aprox. 250 downloads;
* "based on experimental Estel's squeeze upgraded to wheezy", debian-wheezy-upgrade-sulu.img.ext2, approx. 135 downloads;
* total of almost 7,000 downloads of the above images.

Other images (from Qole's site) aren't accounted here, as the Maemo images can also be used in Easy Debian Harmattan.

Anyway, the numbers indicates we have some thousands of Easy Debian Harmattan users.

Let's hope there will be Easy Debian SailFish with many thousand users too !

Happy New Year !

@rcolistete Remember when I asked about the battery? Well, I read it again and it seems like you misunderstood. I was thinking of making the battery indicator INSIDE EasyDebian to work. For example on the panel, the battery won't work if I add the applet and would crash EasyDebian right away.

I've understood ok. I think it is possible, with a service working in MeeGo posting data to a file, with a specific software on Debian reading it and displaying the battery status. So, it is just a matter of somebody programming it.

No, not me :rolleyes: I've a fair size list of projects waiting updates and releases, for Maemo 4, Maemo 5 and MeeGo Harmattan.

Yes, it works for some sites with Java, but not for others.

See the 1st post, which links to post #137, which links to post #117.

Follow the 1st post of this topic. Choose an Debian image (I suggest the debian-m5-v3e-Sci because it is well tested), put it in MyDocs folder, tap "DebianChroot" icon and check if you obtain the result of the last screenshot of 1st post.

I followed and nothing happened.

You can also start it from console. Just say "debian" as root. If it does not work, check what is logged to console.

Are you sure you have the debian image in correct place?
Where is it, and what are yo using?
For example this works:

~ $ ls -la /home/user/MyDocs/debian*.img*
-rw-r--r-- 1 user root 2147483648 Jan 19 18:48 /home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2

Well, for the stargup script to find & access the loop FS the image has to be located in MyDocs and be named "debian-something-or-so"

Re: [Announce] Easy Debian for MeeGo Harmattan : now with translucent VKB on PR1.3 !

Hmm, I think i've got myself into a sticky situation whereby my Iceweasel using the recommended debian image doesn't work...

I've been messing around with the Dali-Fennec so maybe its as a result of that. I've deleted the debian image and uncompressed it again but to no avail.

Any idea on where the configuration is located so that i can delete it and start over or something to remedy this?

Another thing I wanted to confirm is that there is no usuable X-Term within Easy Debian right? As I see its still on the wish-list in the OP but was wondering if there has been any progress on that. :)

Thanks!

Did you try looking in /home /user/.mozilla as fennec does modify that, and debian also mounts it as the home directory....?

Ah yes that was the one :)

I had moved it to .mozilla.old as i used the dali-fennec's .mozilla there... Its fixed now. Thanks!

I'm not sure they said anything like that...

The image file should begin 'debian' and have the file extension '.img'. Ensure this file is in the folder '/home/user/MyDocs/' - if it isn't, move it there.

This folder already exists and there is no need to create another.

You have a choice of which image to use. Some were listed back in post 137.

After downloading one of these (you may have done this already, I don't know), move the lzma file to MyDocs, then decompress it:
xz -d <whatever-image-you-used>.lzma

You need to :
1) have a file manager (FileBox is free) to easily copy files inside your Nokia N9;
2) have Terminal working on your Nokia N9;
3) know how to use CLI (Command-Line Interface) of X Terminal, i.e., Unix/Linux commands like ls, cp, etc;
4) read the 1st post, it is all explained in details.

This topic is not meant to teach users how to use CLI, etc. So, RTFM.

Exactly.

And, besides, anyone who wants to install debian HAS to know already a lot about working on the terminal and linux in general, or else why bother?

Yes, but Chromium has some problems on some Debian ARM. There are also Epiphany, Midori, etc. Not all of them work with Java and Flash.

The 1st post points to post #137, with information about the web browsers installed on each image. See also post #117 about web browsers on Easy Debian.

I prefer to use MeeGo Harmattan web browsers (native, Firefox with Flash, Opera), an Easy Debian Fennec only when needed (some Java site). Firefox and Opera for MeeGo Harmattan also have desktop mode.

My website's statistics show a huge amount of traffic still on the old Easy Debian images; 30GB last month. Amazing to think there are still so many downloads of this old software.

Only BT keyboard, mouse arrow is not show in MeeGo GUI.

Not all keys work inside LXDE, depending on your Bluetooth keyboard. But outside LXDE, it is like in any MeeGo software.

Okay, but why? I can use a bluetooth mouse on desktop debian, so isn't their a driver I can install or something? Couldnt do this: http://wiki.debian.org/HOWTO/BluetoothMouse ? or this: http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com...e-and-keyboard ?

Easy Debian runs as a chrooted OS inside MeeGo Harmattan, sharing many services (X11, etc).

It was chosen by Nokia to not show mouse cursor due to performance issues. See :

Last time I checked the qole.org/files page was not the easiest one to navigate without external sources of information. Maybe it could use some descriptions?

and i shocked and it worked as inception, aegis etc.
but i can not install easy-debian chroot even i installed xmid.
it says me cp can't create permission denied /home/user/.chroot.orig problems.
i tried 5 times and never worked!
what should be the problem?

I still cant get opensh + aegisctl to install I keep typing

$ /usr/sbin/incept aegisctl_1.3_armel.deb
and
$ /usr/sbin/incept opensh_1.00_armel.deb

but it always says not found. I unzipped them in /home/user/

tried to install via filebox, but then I cant get xmimd_1.2_armel.deb to install.

it keeps saying cant install

First, obviously, make sure those are the actual filenames. Secondly, have you tried giving incept the full file path?

I double checked the file names and they are correct.

Im going to check on the file path

if the files are in /home/user/inception

would I need to type in

$ /home/user/inception/incept aegisctl_1.3_armel.deb

also is there a space between incept and aegisclt?

Thanks
