Hi Folks!

First of all MANY THANKS all of you! Making Yappari to work you saved my life (again) :)

Secondly I have two questions please:

1) Has this new version of Yappari (2.0.2) implemented any end-to-end encryption as in the original whatsapp protocol? If not: Is this feature expected to be implemented in the near future?

2) I use "Alarmed" to connect/disconnect Yappari on an hourly basis; the command sent to disconnect is "killall Yappari" but in this way the little blue circle in the status bar does not disapear when Yappari gets killed. Does anyone a way to close Yappari + the little blue circle?

Thanks a lot in advance

KEEP IT UP GUYS!!

2) You do not have to kill yappari and restart it to connect/disconnect. You can leave it running in background, it won't try to connect but will wait until there is a network connection available (manual or scheduled). Yappari won't waste resources or harm device/battery, while running and "Waiting for connection".

It fixes the connection problem (new protocol). Registration fix was done by coderus but not released yet.

I can confirm this is TRUE, as opposed to the curious way in which the stock-IM-program sucks the battery dry when the user chooses for 'online-status' ... Always trying to (re)connect no matter the status of the network-connection ... Haven't been able to figure out yet if Skype is the vampire there or the whole IM-program itself (anybody?)

But Yappari is a very battery-friendly chatter ... :)

I think the main issue regarding battery drain using stock IM, is that IM itself will mantain connection open (3g or wireless) resulting in quick battery drain.

That is for sure main reason of what you noticed, aside IM's cpu usage when idle (I did not monitor that paramer).

i don't think he is killing yappari to save battery, but to avoid being contacted or to avoid anyone knows the time you are going to bed (assuming to switch off the internet connection at that time.

Really, read this first: http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/general/21009863
And probably read whole faq to understand whatsapp service rules.
In case you doing everything right wait for v2.0.3 which is will be released tomorrow. It should contain recent registration fixies and can help you.

You lot are pretty impatient! :p But it's really nice to work on something that people are eager to check out :)

First post is now updated (I've removed some paragraphs that do not longer apply to make it easier to read but still leaving the most important bits).

Well, here is the explanation of the changelog items that need it:
  • Implemented (as a selectable but enabled by default option) ability to send and receive read notifications on individual chats (i.e.: blue double tick).

There's a new setting that says "Report when the other party has read messages". I didn't realized the full text didn't fit the screen, so I have to explain that this works BOTH WAYS; meaning that you will only be able to know when the other party has read your messages (marked with a double blue check) if you allow the other party to know when you have read their messages.

I know this is controversial, but I feel like that's what is fair: if you wanna know, you have to let know. If you disagree with this, well, you can always compile the code yourself (the repository will let you know which commit to revert) or write me until I get bored and obey you, but this is not likely to happen.
  • Better UI for multimedia messages with long captions.
I've enabled wor wrapping just so long messages do not require
    horizontal scroll.
  • Fixed registration again and replaced code to avoid reregistration on certain occasions (CODeRUS).
You should experience less registration requests from now on and those of you that couldn't register should be able to do now. Thanks to CODeRUS for this :)
  • Fixed last seen timestamp (CODeRUS).
    We hope it now works.
  • Added infrastructure to report which participant is composing message on group chats (cepiperez).

My colleague cepiperez (who I thank for his invaluable help), has added this infraestructure to the code, meaning that probably next release will use it, so we will be able to report more information on group chats, but for now this is not something you will experience while using Yappari.

I hope you all enjoy this new release. It'll be available soon also in extras-testing and once you have tested it, I plead you to vote it if you consider it's ready to reach extras, or to downvote it if you find something that makes it unusable.

Best regards!

[*]Fixed last seen timestamp (CODeRUS).
We hope it now works.

At the moment the only reason for me to update to 2.0.3 would be the timestamp issue...but since ceene said he HOPES it works I was just wondering what the people that have already updated have observed concerning this?

Does it work??

I am pretty certain it works, why don't you give it a go and test it? There's nothing you can lose :)

Yes it does in the chat window, no it doesn´t on the view contact window.

@ceene still got the (+) ghost contact.

Greetings.

I'll try to solve both things for next release, I still have to research the changes Scorpius did to fix that before and see why they don't seem to make effect anymore.

In the view contact window refesh the last seen when you close the contact window.

I mean, if your contact was online when you close the chat window, when you saw the view contact window, will show online, and it won't change in there unless you open the chat window again.

Don't worry,i understand, with change of protocol, changes a lot of stuff and takes time to fix all of them.

By the way, i'm not complain, i'm happy to get Yappari working, just informing the things i saw.

Greetings.

Edit: Awww, the x is typing won´t work on the groups anymore :o , on 0.2 works and was kinda cool, obviously shows the name of the group, like group is typing.

emmmm... actually I have something to lose: I kinda liked the "one way" blue ticks ;) :D

But I understand and respect why you implemented it the way you did.
I will give it a try, thanks!

s4br0s0 2015-01-31 14:49

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!

Related with the blue double tick (i guess), i haven't change it, so got default.

Send message to contact, double green tick shows, close chat, contact respond, open chat, the double green tick is now grey tick.

Let me disable and check.

Greetings.

Edit: I fact, doesn´t matter, once when you close the chat window and open again, the double green tick change to grey (with or without the blue tick enable/disable).

Don't know if the other person have the double blue tick enable.

Edit 2: The x is typing doesn't work for contacs either, and green/blue ticks shows as far you have the chat open, when you close and open again, shows grey tick.

Can confirm the 'x is typing bug', but the ticks issue... I don't know what to say, I'm not experiencing that at all, even across reboots the tick status is maintained.

Is wierd, in groups shows everything normal, in contacts is the thing, have to try with others contacts.

Greetings.

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!

Thank you very much for this update guys, I thought it would have taken much more time than few days!! :)

Speaking about sending blue ticks, I made a test with another phone and noticed:

- chat window closed on Yappari, 2nd phone sends message: on second phone I got double green tick until I open maemo system notification, then I get blue ticks -> all right!

- leaving chat window open on Yappari, 2nd phone sends message: on second phone I always get blue ticks, no matter N900 chat window is in background or screen is locked -> when blue led notification is still blinking on N900, I already get blue ticks on 2nd phone

I think sending blue ticks should happen, if feasible, using same event that disables blue led notification (when user opens maemo system notification).
What do you think about?

ceene 2015-01-31 15:49

That's a good idea, thank you! I can't test all use cases and this is something that I didn't even think about. I'll take a look at it.

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!

I've just solved the 'X is typing...'. It'll be on next release, which I hope will be ready some time next week.

For groups it'll work also by saying who is typing (well, when multiple people are typing at the same time, only the one that started typing the last will be notified of, else it'd clutter the status bar and would be harder to code :p)

It doesn't matter if last seen timestamp is wrong, it will be obsolete soon.
Whatsapp sends last seen when you subscribe to a contact.
The new code will be updated soon.

May I ask what you mean by "subscribe to a contact"?

When you open a chat, your whatsapp clients sends "subscribe" to this contact, so you can know when he's online. This function now retrieves the last seen, so current one will be deprecated soon.

PS: Whatsapp VOIP is on its way... but it will take some time to implement in unofficial clients...

For me the current one still doesn't work. When I open a chat window, the system sends out jabber:iq:last request, but the reply I get back invariably is 501 / feature-not-implemented. This happens for all my contacts.
