We don't even know for sure that it is Nokia that is managing the shipping from Korea to the distributors.

In many cases the distributors buy the products directly from the factories. It maybe up to the distributor how they get the products to its own warehouses.

Many people would be complaining that their local shop has stock but won't sell.

Happens all the time. Sharp eyed people take pictures and it ends up on Engadget or something. Sometimes the retailer slips up and has the item available for purchase before the official launch date, sometimes it's pictures of stock before it's on the shelves taken by employees. A recent example is the Palm Pixie showed up in display cases in Walmart before official launch but it was not yet entered in the system and thus could not yet be purchased.

The other manufacturers do international warranty.

This might be one of the reasons why N900 costs more in EU than in USA.

Hey guys i called yesterday to the nokia online store in USA and they told me that the Nokia N900 is now in the store!!!! But they can´t ship the device because the Nokia BH-703 Bluetooth headset
of the promotion with the pre-order is not compatible with the
N900!!!! what´s wrong with you Nokia? why you do this things in the North American market???? is for things like this that Nokia Is not The Lider in USA and Nokia need to do better efforts to suplie the needs of the people of the USA´s market! What do you think about it?????

Uh-oh...just went to the MPD web site to see if there was any change in the 'exclusive availability from mid november' statement. Clicking on the N900 now redirects to www.nokiaretail.co.uk which states 'delivery during late november'

:(

Sounds like bs to me. I ordered the phone on Wednesday without said Bluetooth promotion. I wonder what will happen.

Well the delay was... a delay. No, we weren't told exactly what caused it. We were told that it was in response to feedback from the 300 loan devices. I've said before that's as much as a manufacturer dare say - if they gave details of the problem it would stoke up rumours of some non-existent problem that will be fixed by release anyway.

As for information since the devices left the factory... that was Tuesday - it's only Friday now! It may feel like a century or two since Peter's announcement, but it's only three days. When will devices arrive at retailers? Well, that actually does depend on things like tides, Somali pirates, shipping companies, road haulage, and a range of things not quite under control. If you wanted exact details, Nokia should probably have waited till all the devices were delivered safely to retailers and then said 'go'!

The imformation about who gets priority and stuff like that seems like a more reasonable grumble, but only if you want to be One Of The First. I want the device before my current phone dies, but actually, I'm not that interested in being The First to be able to come in here and dance about it. If I'm a week behind the rest of you, well, so be it. I want it because it's a good device, not so I can be the first to have a new shiney toy.

Those places where there's been a serious delay (such as Sweden) have had a formal announcement. Other delays are just rumours.

No no, I don't mean when the devices arrive. It's pointless to try to figure that out based on how many variables one has to take into account as you pointed out. I meant more as "which retailer is getting the shipments first". And things like if the exclusivity thing is true or not. It may not matter to you when you get the device, and normally it wouldn't bother me.

I was planning on waiting till next year originally but I decided that my life was to hectic with my commuting to 3-4 different places a week and not having fast access to my email until I got home or to my sister's dorm to check email. It's hard to coordinate meetings and stay up to date when your only checking email the 30 minutes before you go to bed because you have to get up at 5 AM for work just to sit in a two hour commute to work. =P And likewise to get home (ah the joys of being a Washingtonian). Though I'm happy simply for the fact I have a job that looks like it may convert me into a full time employee after I graduate with my Masters degree. And they offer a back to school program after you work with them for a while (provided you stay with them for X amount of years) so I can go back to get my PhD after I pay off my student loans.

Even with that I was still fine for waiting on the n900 (provided that it was arriving this year since if I'm paying more then 2 months of 3G access and not being able to use it then...) but the more pressing issue is that my mom is leaving for a trip to Vietnam (she hasn't been there since her family left Vietnam on a raft.. literally following the year after the Vietnam War ended) and I bought the TMobile phone I did because I can get TMobile to unlock it so she can use it while in Vietnam. I checked the bands and everything to ensure that the current phone I bought works over there. II was hoping the n900 would arrive before she left in December so I would have a phone since that's the only thing that's keeping me coordinated with calling my gf or dad for a ride when the public transportation stops (again the joys of living in an area where public transportation only serves you during rush hour), or my sister to come down and let me into the dorm. That's why things like this are irritating me and I wish Nokia would communicate more about it.

(I'm usually a pretty mellow guy).

I'm not so sure about Finland because there is possibility of Finnair's pilot strike. It could badly mess up the air traffic in Finland.

Assumming that N900s have not already arrived in Finland and that they are transported by planes.

I'm pretty sure that the phones wouldn't have been transported by Finnair cargo anyway and the other companies (the real cargo companies for example) still fly in and out normally.

Somehow... I have a feeling it will touchdown in Scandinavia first like you said on this date and start shipping to people on week 49 onwards. But I can always be hopeful. We were the only ones e.g. Scandics /Sweden that was given a date and not by Nokia head honcho but from Nokia Sweden Klas Ström. And Considering how Swedish culture and how we/they run their business I have no reason to loose faith. Being an expat here and understanding the culture I came to the conclusion that everything just works... So taking my experience into consideration I put my faith into the Swedish system. I could be mistaken but only time will tell!!!

They were talking minimum of 1 million or it's not worth their time. Of course, the N770/800/810 had to have been quite small in number. For the amount of marketing they have been producing for this model, I would think they would have built plenty to satisfy the demand.

Well, 1.000.000 units as a minimum order sounds promising. I want this phone to be a huge success to draw a maxmimum amount of skillful programmers to the device to create fantastic future apps. And could you imagine if just 10% of those new buyers sign up here?!

I hate nokia atleast if they are going to announce shipping they should follow up with any information instead of just leading us on, I understand it takes time to get from the factory to distributor to warehouse and all the things that take getting from A to B but it's not that hard to update the website and providing information. I have yet to see anyone confirm shipment from NokiaUSA, but NokiaUSA say they started shipping on Tuesday.

All Nokia pages are kinda weird for the last two days.
If you visit the Nokia EU page you'll see the press release and after that you'll have some messed up pages.
German site: At phones section you have "It is avaible" - page later it is preorder - same on UK, US and the other pages - maybe Nokia is ready to ship the N900 but world is not?

If you take 2 seconds to think over that last sentence from you: Nokia started shipping from the factory on Tuesday, so how would Nokia USA be able to ship to people on the same day?

They used super-fast-flying korean supermen.

It's too funny to see men who maybe running a company or have a familiy they need to take care of, behave like childrens.

Remembers me at the time the 9500 was released.

Exactly they started shipping from factory, so why is NokiaUSA stating that they started shipping to customers, and yet no one has been charged nor has received any tracking information.

In a normal world when a company, that sells to end user, speaks about "shipping", refers to shipping to end user and to sales point, and not about a plane (or a boat) in korea.

I'm afraid that next week we learn that nokia has a plant on the pluto planet and the n900s are built in that plant, and we have to be patient a bit more...:)

Maybe because people can't believe an organisation of Nokia's size and experience would announce something as banal as when their products are shipping from a factory in Korea yet give exactly zero information about when people can expect to see it at retail :)

First we hassle for Nokia to give us information, then when they let us know that the product is released and on its way to the public, we still want more. Seriously, they didn't have to announce its release until their factories and flagship stores had the item. Nokia was doing all of us a favor by letting us know that they fixed the bugs they were concerned about and there was no more reason for a delay. Does anyone read the official releases anymore? Does anyone realize that they are not a major stockholder for Nokia? Get over yourselves people, you are NOT the center of the world to them, nor to any other corporation for that matter.
