As It was written in this topic, some generic USB to ethernet adapter drivers are preset on power-kernel. Still, this have nothing to do with HEN on its own. You should be asking on kernel-power thread (still no one will be able to confirm it unless you run into good soul that got exactly same adapter and tested it).

I myself got a much cheaper and simple one. female-usb to male-ethernet, and it's a lot more symplistic - it literally looks like they took four of the pins in the ethernet plug and took those wires and routed them to the USB port pins. This one I haven't fiddled too much with, but it's not as plug-n-play as the post I linked to above reported theirs as being.

BEWARE!
There are such adapters that do exactly that, they use RJ45 patchcables with a large number of adapters RJ45-F<->$RANDOM to build all sorts of cables and adapters, e.g. micro-USB-M<--(patchcable)-->USB-A-F.

NEVER EVER use such a thing to connect N900-USB directly to a ethernet network or NIC. It will definitely fry your N900

I really love this app and I appreciate the work from whoever participated in achieving this. It was the 1st reason made me buy this great phone before I discovered its great wonders :)

I was just wondering if it's possible to add some sort of alert (like the plug-in sound in Windows) to alert the user that it's time to hit the "mount" button instead of waiting for like 8~10 seconds that sometimes I have to go through the procedure again cuz I didn't wait long enough before pressing "mount".

p/s: is using micro-USB-M/USB-F harmful for anything else other than Ethernet or NIC? cuz I use it to plug in thumb drives.

I always appreciate your input, especially regarding electronics, but how 'guaranteed' is this frying? And would it be instantaneous or long-term?

Also, when you say 'directly', does that include through a usb-male to micro-usb-male cable? Because the adapter I have is USB (the normal 'full' size) female to ethernet male. So I still have to put a micro-usb-male-to-normal-usb-male cable (for example, the standard Nokia CA-101 cable) between the N900 and the USB-ethernet adapter.

I already plugged by N900 in through this arrangement (N900->cable->adapter->ethernet) a few times, and the USB port is still working fine so far. Does that mean damage is happening anyway and I should discontinue use before it shows, or on the contrary, that the extra cable between adapter and N900 is protecting it from the excessive current?

USB is using 3.3V for data transmission and 5V on a wire for power. On a RJ45 plug you can find all voltages from 2.2V to 120V, depending on where you plug that cable to (ethernet, PoE, phone analog or ISDN...)
Generally you must not connect USB to any network other than USB via mere wires, no matter what plugs are at each end of the cable. There are devices that have electronics inside, to adapt e.g from USB to ethernet. Usually you can tell they have electronics by the fact there's some sort of case - not always though.
My warning was about mere cables without any electronics that simply have USB at one end and RJ45 at the other end, and so directly electrically connect USB to any non-USB network or outlet.
