Thanks Xman. I posted it in the other thread only I think, but you are right, perhaps people here would be interested too.

I might record another video in the coming days to show other chroot uses, like LibreOffice, cmus, gimp, R, etc., but no promises because I think the most important was to show that Xfce just runs fine even without hardware acceleration.

Kabouik, nice. I really like how the gestures worked great to get to the multitasking screen. And of course you don't always see live terminal on the thumbnails of the multitasking screen.

Away looking forward if you do managed to make more.

Was just wondering. When you chroot ubuntu does sound work?
For example if you go to YouTube on Chromium or Firefox can you hear a music video?

It does after you follow instructions on Github. The downside is it will still output audio when SFOS volume is set to 0 or silence mode.

Thanks, I'm glad to see progress here using SFOS. Anyone chroot from android? Also, wondering when the next version of this phone will be released. What specs it would have. I guess way to early to know..
Regardless, you folks are trailblazers. I appreciate your efforts!

In a free market, the value of something is the price a buyer and seller agree upon. We'll see if any buyer is willing to pony up that amount, or whether the seller has to cut his asking price to get a sale. I'll be interested to see what the ultimate result is.

My order has been processing since the last decade!

But in a more serious note, this project has certainly been straining me patience, with all the delays. I was waiting to get the phone 3 weeks after payment, like initially promised. Then I expecting it for Christmas, but didn't get it, felt like a huge letdown.

To each his own, I guess, but next time I will order a product that will be sent in 1 or 2 days after payment. The waiting time is simply too long for me in this case. But all in all I'm still happy to support this, even if there has been difficulties. I'm still confident I will receive the phone at some point in future.

---

In other note: those who have a phone, and especially users who live in the Nordics (if there are any right now), did you choose QWERTY or QWERTZ and how did it work with öäå? Do you find the layout good to type those letters? I ordered a QWERTZ but I think I can change back to QWERTY if I message FxTec support.... I have no idea which layout is better for "scandic letters", but I know QWERTZ has almost all the scandic letters in the keyboard already except maybe one, the downside is Z and Y are in switched places.

Mind that the QWERTY layout has the awkward "shifted (punctuation) keys column"!

Plus Scandic layout(s) are likely easier to map to a QWERTZ hardware layout.

I agree and in the same boat, my current phone the XZ1 has been acting up since February of last year and I was hoping I could hold out till July when this phone was supposed to come out, I still have the XZ1 now and it's only been getting worse and it can be quite unbearable, it is also the worst Sony phone I've ever hard, out of three, the Xperia X I had before this was better, I'm disappointed that the phone didn't come out when it was initially promised, or the time after, or the time after that. But I understand things can happen in small companies.

I have been thinking since the Asus Rog phone 2 came out of getting that instead, since it comes with a massive battery, the latest spec, it's also slightly cheaper and in theory could get a small keyboard attached to the second USB C port on the side. But decided to support this phone and the company instead.

I have also chose QWERTZ layout (however, I would chose non-shifted QWERTY if it was possible) and I feel it was a right choice.

Simply because this is the standard layout and other layouts can be adapted most easily - the Z/Y change is not huge anyway.

Otherwise, you may need FinQWERTY which has existing layouts also for QWERTY and QWERTZ keyboard of Pro1 and it currently has Norwegian layout.
See currently supported layouts here.

I do hope that this is true. While I am fully aware of the dangers of pre-ordering devices from startups, frustration is tarting to creep in.

When was the pre-orders made? I remember ordering as soon as possible June or July, right?) and paid immediately after I got email, I think it was beginning of August. Device already at resellers hands, but not in mine :( Hopefully soon(tm)

I think they would not make such a definite announcement if it's uncertain to happen. And this is good as I have been thinking about cancelling my order lately. I think I can wait a little longer with this announcement.

What definite announcement? Erik has been clear from the start that his statements are unofficial, and most of the delivery statements up to now have been misleading to say the least.

I mostly meant the definite "it's going to happen" tone of the post. But I concede I haven't read Erik's previous announcements so you might be right.

The most frustrating thing in this whole debacle (at least for me) has been the lack of any proper, consistent, statements. Erik makes apparently unofficial statements on the companies own official forum. Chen makes statements on twitter which are personal, but presumably offical given his position in the company. Adrian released a video at some point via some route I don't remember. The 'official' fxtec twitter feed seemed to be mostly a stream of increasingly irritating adverts, ignoring the fact that most customer haven't yet received anything.

I don't even have (to the best of my knowledge) any acknowledgement from Fxtec that they have taken my money. Even their payment system still says 'payment at future date, more than 4 months after they took the money from my account.

I don't understand why there isn't a single blog type page on their website where they host their 'official' statements, so there would be less confusion and misinformation floating around. Or maybe I do understand why, but if so I hoped Fxtec were better than that.

I want to thank and also apologise to @epninety for the problem he mentioned.

First of all I want to assure you that your order has indeed been produced. It's been crazy 2 weeks as everything is short of labour, but we managed to make great great progress.

Unfortunately I was fully stuck at factory and product related work, there has been various challenges. Changing FX social / blog is on my list, unfortunately there are things way more important than that for me at the moment, but as soon as I can free my hands a bit I will lead the change. I am with you!

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

If it makes the wait easier (I am afraid it won't, but it will still be reassuring to some), I can assure the device is what many of us have been waiting for a decade (I'm not counting the N950 because it never hit the market). The vast majority of TMO people will love their device. Of course, when using alternative OSes like SFOS, it can be a bit rough around the edges since SFOS is a community project, but it works very well already, and there is hope to eventually get Leste as well (please consider sending a unit to the Leste team, they are making great progress lately but confirmed they cannot really afford a unit on their personal budget).

On SFOS, and combined with a well configured sailfish_ubu_chroot (thanks Preflex, Elros34 and TheKit), it actually totally defeated my N900 in almost every "pocket computer" aspects. I find myself using my Pro¹ running Ubuntu inside SFOS very often at home when I would usually have used my laptop, just because it feels equally convenient once properly configured with keybindings, and is already in my pocket when I need it.

I am seriously considering buying a spare, in case the present decade is like the previous one and we have only one device meeting our needs. The Pro¹ really is a great achievement by Chenliangchen and F(x)tec, and the fact that they opened the bootloader is also something that will contribute to making this device last long within the community.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

Thanks @chenliangchen, I, and I'm sure most others here, appreciate how much work has gone into this project by you and your colleagues, and I hope you are justly rewarded for it in the end result.

To reiterate what I've said on the fxtec forum previously, I haven't any complaint over the repeated slips in delivery, I know how hard it is to bring a niche product to market and get anywhere close to budget and timescale targets.

But I don't want to get updates via forum posts by members, saying 'fxtec told me by private email...'. Maybe I should just have set a cronjob to email fxtec support twice a day saying 'wtf is happening?'. ;)

Most of you will be left very happy, and those in the list will receive a stock assignment notice either this weekend or early next week.

There is nothing left to prioritise on the Indiegogo side, as that will be fully covered by this coming batch. Those with Indiegogo deals can start getting excited as they are the first known customers that will be 100% fulfilled.

The not so good news is that this batch will not include all pre-orders as we had initially anticipated, due to the factory only being able to produce this much units before the shutdown for the Chinese New Year. It will, however, still include 70% of all pre-orders, starting from the oldest, assigned based on a percentage of how many orders there are in a country. The remaining, relatively small percentage of unshipped, mostly very recent orders, will be processed shortly after the Chinese holidays in February.

The shipment will be sent from Hong Kong. Those in Europe and the US will have their customs fees pre-paid by us, as we charged you for duty in those regions already.

Erik

So yes, the previous news is now moot.

EDIT: It does say that the unshipped orders will be "mostly very recent orders", however.

At this point I'm not surprised, and it hurts to say that.
I still don't understand how they can say all pre orders will be shipped and then just a few days later say 70%. It's so off. Almost feel like this irreparably damages trust too.
For them to build credibility, I wouldn't even hint at something being done unless I'm certain it's going to happen. Rather they over deliver than under promise. Maybe they will learn eventually...

Imagine if they delay your warranty claim like this or support ticket.

This would be a huge help to both the community and I would thing fx to have as many OS running on there device as possible.

And since many are looking for direct replacement for n900 this would truly be the only new option.

Great comment Kabouik!

I also vote for giving a Pro1 to the Leste dev team!

I am also part of the people who want a "new N900".
The more the Pro1 approaches to N900, the more it will attract us.

It seems being a great device. A bit more weight on the balance is always good. Even just knowing Fxtec is supporting Leste would influence some buyers, I think. Just because it opens a wider horizon, with more possibilities.

Why hesitating? Giving one device to this team will certainly bring back at least 2 buyers. Even so, Fxtec get the fruits back. And I am sure it will bring more. So why hesitating? Hurry guys!:)
