Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

What I am wondering about is what happens after these "batches" have shipped out, is there a possibility for someone who is not a backer to order one later, maybe next year or whenever?

Will it be possible to buy one thru a webshop or corner store somewhere?

As I stated previously it is quite a big investment to buy one now; but who knows, maybe some year it happens that I'll have enough money to do that.

I would also buy at least some keyboards before they are out of stock if it happens the keys become transparent like on the N900.

As of the time of this (my) post, you have 12 "Thank you"s. Does that equate to £650?

Yes, expect the Pro1 (including minor revisions) to remain for sale ... Unless Fxtec folds, or gets some new 'angle fund' for a Pro2 investment.
Manufacturing the Pro1 was/is no less a big investment. Spreading this investment over as many units as possible is what makes that investment all the more worthwhile.
Don't forget that the Pro1 seems - to me - to be Fxtec's present (and in near future) sole source of income.

Minimum batch sizes are small compared to what they used to be. Keeping the Pro1 for sale thus only demands for a (relatively) small additional investment.

From the buyer's investment point of view.
The Pro1 allows for running (quasi) open-source OSes and is - from what I've read - quality built. The only remaining 'daily' hurdles for a nice long-term investment spread are taking care of our precious one and battery replacement (in service centres?).
Any confirmation of the latter remains appreciated.

Let's become service centres ourselves!
Same question, I thought Pro1 batt was replaceable like on the n900. I must have mixed with the Librem.
But without joke, I think it must be possible.
Less sure about backup battery though.

Chen/Fxtec did highlight that the battery of Pro1 is replaceable, but not so easily that you'd be able to swap batteries during the day, as you can do with N900. Haven't yet heard of available spare parts though, but Fxtec seems to be busy enough fulfilling preorders at the moment.

Regarding Maemo Leste, I am planning to attend FOSDEM this year. If someone can introduce me to founder of Maemo Leste I can leave my unit to him. :-)

Wow, for people doubting Chen's commitment to maemo here he is giving a boost the Leste team with what may turn out to be one of their fastest devices for testing!

Good on you Chen!

Can wait for the fruits of this gesture.

Wouldn't claim to be the founder (I think that would be freemangordon), but I am one of the main devs, and I will be giving a talk at FOSDEM about Maemo Leste: https://fosdem.org/2020/schedule/event/smartphones/ - so FOSDEM might indeed be a good moment to pass that along.

Parazyd will be there too, freemangordon probably won't be, I think?

Let's get this done.

I know that Chen is offering one device. I'm still willing contribute towards a second device either to the Leste team or a device/bounty to someone willing to work on an AnBox port (assuming Sailfish, I am not sure if that is possible on Leste).

Just to clarify, Anbox is possible on both. The possible problem with Anbox is that its Android base will need to be updated to Android 9 if it is desired to use device's OpenGL drivers directly.

Yes, I won't be.

However, I still wonder how we're going to boot the device with upstream kernel. I am under the impression this is not possible ATM.

I think Sailfish for Xperia 10 is based on the Android 9 kernel. Isn't this the case with the community port for Pro 1?

Indeed, I think it's not possible ATM - but that might change.

The link is about booting the modem processor via remoteproc, but you need to first boot the main CPU(s) to linux to be able to boot remote processors.

What about this link: https://www.werts.nl/linux-kernel-5-...-is-whats-new/
It´s about linux 5.4:

A bunch of ARM-based laptops running the Snapdragon 835 SoC are supported by Linux 5.4, including the ASUS NovaGo, HP Envy X2 and the Lenovo Miix 630.

If the Leste team is getting a device from Chenliangchen himself, there is also a possibility to donate for Elros34 and/or Preflex if they are interested, because their chroot scripts are really amazing on a Pro¹, or to people behind PostmarketOS, or to SFOS porters who only have pre-production units. Don't get me wrong, more devices in the Leste team would be great too, but the other possibilities are interesting too in my opinion.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

Do we still have a community council? The council would have been the natural conduit for collecting donations and steering resources to the right people.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

I am sure in with personal 50€ and would gladly do the middle man if thats of help, but still that's only 3 confirmed donors and 10 missing even for the 650€ preorder price for a second Pro¹?

And who will get the device?
How to be fair with then 2 phones and 3(?) devs?
What about Parazyd?
Maybe a 2nd Pro¹ is out of reach but we could collect shipping cost so the 3 can share the one Wizzup_ picks up?
Please suggest, i am open for everything.

Today I received my shipping confirmation. The parcel is transported by FedEx and should arrive in Germany at Friday, 24.01.2020

(For reference: I placed my order in July 19, at the same time I returned a Turris MOX to the Turris team for repair and I'm still waiting for a fixed device.)

Also, I got my tracking number. Phone should be by Tuesday.

Re: Are you Ready? F(x)tec Pro 1 HW Keyboard Phone

I would never try and dictate how a donated device is use. However I have very little interest in helping to foster more android development. I can clearly see the advantages of getting AnBox running on sailfish/maemo or whatever. But it's my belief that by continuing to push this as a solution we're missing opportunities to build up an open and vast ecosystem. Think of were we could have been if qt on maemo, BB10, meego, tizen and ubport all had easily ported apps and even shared stores.

I'm very thankful for all that have or will work on porting OS, updating software and keeping the maemo OS alive.

But I think perhaps a vote or at least how donated (community purchase) device will be priorities. By doing this every one can be sure they understand if they want to support something or not. And lastly no one can complain later (oh right of course ppl will still complain :D )

I'm super excited about how much steam maemo, sailfish, postmark, ubport and the many other OS that are getting the attention they should have years ago.

This is not a criticism of anyone or anything ... more how to avoid and manage expectation.

What do you lovely folks think?

Oh and hot dam maemo on pro1!! I image duo booting is in my future!

While it focuses on practically making a mainline kernel boot, I have not seen such a structured and comprehensive guidance WRT mainlining a device ("platform") support before.

Happy coding!

My Pro1 arrived today. I have not had to time to even turn it on but I have to say that I am really impressed with the build quality. This phone feels like a metal brick, in a good way.

The package had a pouch but not the earphones (I am a preorderer). Not a big deal, I probably would not have used those anyway.
