Re: N900 shipping delayed

Do we even know at this point what the reasons were for the insane delay on this. I mean I know it's been published that it was to "fix it" and "make it better", but damn...with this kind of launch delay and dancing around release dates...it better be an insane overhaul on SOMETHING to make Maemo uber.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

Well considering the fact that Nokia officially said they started shipping the unit last week, they can't be holding back to "fix it". This is going to be my first Nokia phone/device, and so far I am not getting the best initial impressions from them.

Sad thing is, end users have no clue, retailers have no clue, preferred vendors have no clue, and even nokia themselves seem to have no clue.

But at this point, I think it may be safe to assume that perhaps they were not being honest when they said they started shipping last week.

Exactly. That date was pure BS to calm the masses and to buy themselves more time it seems. Prove me wrong, Nokia.

Reflect for a moment. Imagine you are going to drive a long way - say 600 miles - and the people at the other end want to know when you'll arrive so they can have a meal ready. How can you predict?

You can give them a vague ballpark, and hope you hit it, but with the uncertainty of traffic, weather, that accident on the m5 and a couple of tractors, the chances are you'll be wide of the mark.

You can make a worst case estimate, give them that and then hang around in the playing park opposite their house till the time you said you'd arrive. (Which is roughly what most manufacturers do - someone has already said that the big release video game recently was preceded by days of it piled up in stores Not For Sale).

Or you can call them up and say "I'm now leaving" and hope they can be mature enough to make a guess about when you'll arrive and be flexible about the possible transport complications.

Which is more or less what Nokia did. Peter's comment was your n900 calling you from Korea and saying "I'm now leaving". I guess it just got stuck behind a tractor somewhere on the High Seas.

So they are putting out fake press releases, just to calm down a few people on a board? With nokia being a public company?

So you are basically accusing them of fraud?

Neat one.

I'm sorry to have to connect the dots for you...
1. we say we're shipping
2. no one has received a shipment a week later (unless they're bringing back the pony express, SOMEONE should have received it by now)
3. ????
4. fraud!

Try as you must, there is no defence for this BS Launch. I just looked outside, there are all these holes in my lawn. Ohh Look, they're full of DROIDS!

HTC?, Apple?, it can be done.

Yes, sure. If you keep development and testing completely closed. Would you prefer that? I know I don't.

That has nothing to do with anything. Nokia should have just waiting until after getting developer feedback before announcing a release timeframe.

I have no idea why you're so eager to defend the indefensible. Even at this stage in either a HTC or Motorola product launch the availability date is known. They don't bother to release information as useless as when they ship from their factories (because unsurprisingly nobody cares) but they do tell you when it's showing up in shops.

It's a good thing the military and companies doing large scale operations don't think like that or they'd be dead in the water. You can give an average prediction based off of accurate estimation and do your best to follow it. If you break down somewhere or get stuck you let someone know to update the prediction.

Investors care about revenue. They want to know when the stock will be sold and how much revenue Nokia will book for this quarter.

From reading this and the other thread it seems like a lot customers might not be able to buy until 2010, in the meantime they might just go with a competitor and wait and see if Nokia's next device in 2011 is any good.

Nokia(USA) called and canceled my order for me. They said that they changed distributors and all orders need to be canceled. They said that when i get my money back (in 3-5 business days), I should call them and place a new order. I was urged not to worry because I will still be a "priority pre-order customer."

Honestly, im tired of getting dicked around.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

The stock has already been sold from the Nokia's view when they leave the factory.

I suspect Nokia has more complete view of their business than simply stuffing their inventory channel. If they're pushing stock out the factory door now that won't be available at retail until after Q4 that's a huge disaster.

I know and when I heard Nokia had delayed the release I was thinking they'd need quite a slick operation to get the thing out to people in time for Christmas. Since that didn't sound like the Nokia I knew I was also hoping we'd get some sort of hint this wasn't going to be a normal release and we'd actually see some movement with it.

Instead it's the usual story, people devouring blogs/forums/twitter feeds trying to find out what's happening. Multiple conflicting rumours about availability in different regions. Soon some preorders will ship and some of those people will realise they have a hot item and sell it on ebay for a hefty markup.
