Could you please elaborate on what exactly would require mainlining? I'm not interested in downstream kernels but mainline has included support for Freedreno for some time now and a5xx support was initially added a couple of years ago. There was a video a while back showing Plasma Mobile running with Mesa and Freedreno on mainline Linux on the Nexus 5 (a3xx).

I find it very intriguing to see that the Windows ARM laptops are using the same SoC. I see a lot of potential for it, for a much wider audience being interested in ensuring that the chip is well supported in mainline Linux, as already illustrated by the efforts to run Linux on these laptops.

I do not know much of the details, but regarding graphics you need support for clocks/regulators at least to boot kernel, then iommu should be working. Also there needs to be a driver for display panel. This issue at postmarketOS repo can be interesting to see general process, though the attempted device is Snapdragon 845.

Yes, that is very true, support will need to be added for clocks, regulators, iommu, display, etc., but most, if not all of that is device specific (or SoC specific), it's needed even if you don't want video acceleration, and falls outside the domain of Freedreno. Don't quote me on this, but as far as I can tell, Freedreno for the a5xx is already mainlined and should be ready to go.

I've no idea about the downstream/Android kernel, but support for USB-related nodes is currently in the MSM maintainer's for-next branch and should land in Linux 5.1:

EDIT:

...and it looks like full support in mainline is not far away:

I rechecked my post you quoted, what I meant was "device would need mainlining in order to be able to use Freedreno", sorry it came confusing. Well, still enough to be done either way.

The lady once had another belly as well, but she had to starve herself for a long time, otherwise it wouldn't have been possible to carry her new phone in her pockets...
