Im kinda bored of only one OS for hardware tbh, much rather go by a piece of hardware from newegg for $300 and pay a licence for Maemo, OSX or Android as i see fit.

Small form factor, usable hw keyboard, resistive touch screen, HSPA, OMAP, 3.5mm jack ect won the day for me. I think i wouldve bought the N900 no matter which OS it was running, the fact that its Maemo is just icing on the cake.

Hopefully in the not too distant future i will be able to run multiple OS's on it including, Mer and Android.

Well, your perspective is a bit different from mine, but not too different. I am mainly attracted to the software and open source community. But the hardware is really nice too.

I love the screen resolution and brightness. And I'm really impressed that the N900 runs full gmail (not html version) so well in the browser. The N810 could never come close to this performance level. So powerful hardware is a necessary part of the equation, no doubt!

I like the fact that we have a history of being able to run different OS's on devices in this family (without much trouble). I like that freedom.

OSX may never be available in that way.

One could say that Maemo and Android already are available that way, in a sense. And the fee is $0.

But the thing you are dreaming of -- swapping an OS the way you would on a desktop computer -- is a long, long time away. As I understand it, the problem is primarily due to drivers. We need more hardware manufacturers to open up their drivers.
