I appear to be using the same dictionary as fatalsaint and Texrat. To me the constructive posts about what doesn't work, why and what can be done about it are not whining.

'Whining' is the post that gets titled 'n900 sucks donkey balls' or whatever. 'Whining' is invading every single thread either with your own (irrelevent to the thread) problem or to insult people who a) like the device and b) might be able to help. Actually, Orange Box wasn't whining. He was trolling, pure and simple.

I'd embrace any system that could filter out those sorts of posts while keeping the "My n900 won't do X - am I missing something? Has someone found a way to make that work?" posts.

As for the Teamaker, I'm afraid I don't think the IR is strong enough. It takes an inordinately long time to boil a cup of water. If anyone knows a way to boost the IR output to boiling point...

You need to adapt the CPU stepping so it runs at 600mhz constantly then drop the device into the cup.

Please ensure the water reaches 102c before adding a teabag for a good cuppa.

At this point I think it may be wise to indicate such behaviour could not be responsible for my USB port issue.

I hope that title fits in the space. lol.

I have been here since I got my phone a month ago. my last phone was an N80. I had it for almost 5 years. costed me $618. when it broke and I sold it, the parts got me $56 on ebay. I like to buy high end phones, then keep them for multiple years at a time, then spend half of a thousand dollars again on another, new device.

When you see how many people around you (mostly women) buy a $120 phone, then a year later renew their contract and spend $120 more because their last phone barely functions (women tend to mistreat their phones), you can see that this is a pretty smart investment idea, and 5 years of $120 is about the same as $500 in 5 years anyways.

Buying a phone to me, is something I need to think about carefully. like buying a car. I did my research, and realize this is the phone I want for the long haul. I couldn't have made a better decision.

As I scroll up and down these forums, I'm finding more and more complaining and whining about how this mobile internet device with cellular phone capabilities doesn't do all the things your last phone did. If you're going to whine, then do it to your friends, not on these forums. I get it, alot of you are disappointed, fine, then hurry up and resell your phone to people who are going to appreciate it.

Most of you here are whiners, who just bought the N900 because it was expensive. you're going to whine until the (insert the phone that you consider better than this one) comes out, then you're going to buy that one, sell this phone, and whine on the next forum you move on to. That's what you do. Also, when you are on your next forums you're going to make comments like "My N900 used to be able to (insert function here), I can't believe this one can't do this"

I am here to stay, and quite frankly, I can tell that previous n810/n800 owners seem to be here to stay too. I think I will just hold off on posting for a while until the 'whine heat' dies down, and I will feel that I am among people who truly care about this device.

If you yourself were offended by this thread, then you are exactly the person I am speaking to.

I could have just kept this all in, but I would like to know, do people here agree with me? or am I alone in thisway of thinking. notice how I am civil in my commenting, and my comments are coherent. Please try the same. I don't want this to turn into a flame war.

All you are doing is whining. You really think people should shut up and tolerate design flaws???

So how do we turn unconstructive whiners into constructive, useful community members?

good question that needs an answer soon. how does moderation fit into this? maybe a tougher moderation style which only tolerates polite remarks?

Does the Thread Rating fall short for that?

The thread rating does not even show up in the "New Posts" view, which is the view I almost always use. I am sure some people don't even notice it is there.

I think that a commented listing would be better than a numerical rating, you damned nerds. Let the two Vulcan mindmeldees, Kathy and Texrat, or someone else, write something human about interesting ongoing threads and headline it Don't Miss or something like that. I would even volunteer myself, but I have to save my energy for sarcasm and negativity.

Jaffa has already got this going: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=43734

I've already seen this and it has little relation to my idea.

1. It isn't focused on highlighting good interactions in threads.

2. It isn't publicized with a headline near Talk saying something like Don't Miss.

And there are doubtless other differences.
