edit: while i was writing my post, you have ansewer few of my questions, thanks:p

my question is: who do you call "hacker person"? if it means that you can make **** work but you need to do some wierd things than i think that meego de will be good for us:) for example, is user that installed new nitdroid on n900 hacker person?:P
also, if de has nothing to do harmattan, what did nokia contribute? i always hoped that they would bring new ui or something:P

it seems to me that n900 hardware adaptation is almost ready and there is just better ui and some additional software missing (proper calendar). That seems like easier step than creating drivers and kernels.
additionaly, i think that companies will start releasing their own interaces and apps. If they will go open source, it should be easy to mix it with n900.

one more thing that i cannot anserw to. Will meego de be installable on emmc? (sorry if it has been answerd somehere, dont diss me:PP)

I'd say a hacker is a few steps ahead of installing nitdroid. The hacker is the person who made nitdroid. Installing the new nitdroid means you can read instructions. Congratulations. Do you have any programming experience, especially with *NIX machines? You could probably get away with it.

Oh, ifn you're wondering about the benifits I'll list the most important ones (at least to me) here:

• Open source means community members can get whatever package from gitorious and fix the bug themselves if upstream MeeGo stop developing a specific package. So WONTFIX becomes WEFIX.

• Updated SGX graphics with vsync, we don't have tearing, transitions are silky smooth and everything is looking really pretty. (If you change from the silly default MeeGo.com theme)

• Development tools, everything about how packages and images are generated can be done on your own computer. You can custom build your own tailoured MeeGo image for your and your friends devices by simply editing a kickstart file and adding or removing packages from the image. OBS though daunting at first, is _really_ cool to use if you're a developer. And of course we have the latest and greatest Qt, QML, Qt Mobility, etc. :)

Who knows? Define end-user. e.g. cordia could be something that is usable to end-user. Depends on community and devels who own N900. The current state Maemo 5 PR 1.3 is the last in line I suppose. Only thing that might change things is some critical security fix that Nokia had to release but current version of Maemo 5 is EOL.

Yes. To deliver polished end-user experience on Meego supported OS on N900 is probably mostly in hands of devels doing stuff for fun and free on their freetime.

I think that it´s going to be interesting release for people who want to test & report bugs.

They have implications. Have you followed how they have released weekly builds? Tons of testing material and other stuff that is highly interesting to people who like to test this stuff.

You are already able to install Meego to your N900 so it has already happened. Not in way you would like and it has never ever been promised that it would replace out of box maemo 5. Actually It has been nice to see that they have said that it´s not going to replace that. Compare to e.g. Android upgrades where there is going clusterfck of "is next upgrade going to be officially supported by manufacturer x".

btw. Maemo CSSU currently is not for end-users as you probably describe it. Look wiki. Current state of things is pretty much same as for Meego :| But currently it´s highly relevant for users who want to test things and like breaking stuff.

I think we have already had this discussion but what really means support? Officially supported, community supported, or just supported? If it´s fully open then you are able to code yourself, pay for coding to someone else, make request and wish that someone else fixes&adds feature. What is support? It probably means different things to different people. Fully open program is basically supported to end of time. It´s just there and never goes away and is always waiting. Is just possibility considered as support?

Aha. Got it. Thanks. Harmattan is to the n900 what Maemo 5 is to the n810. I'd love to test MeeGo on my n900, but am reluctant to try it until I have a device I can use instead of the n900 - because I rely on my n900 for a number of things, including keeping in touch with people in the UK on the phone, Skype & e-mail. This has been really helpful.

Provided you have a spare Micro SD card, and you take your SIM card out before booting MeeGo, you can play with it _without_ affecting Maemo at all. Though most of the poeple using MeeGo @ N900 use a uboot enabled kernel. You can still use the flasher program to load the kernel without flashing it to the device. This means that all you have to do is copy a current MeeGo DE or N900 image to a spare Micro SD card, pop it in, turn the device off, then run flasher with '-l -k path_to_kernel -b' wait for it to say "Waiting for devices, then plug your powered off N900 into your computer running flasher using the USB cable. And it'll boot into MeeGo :) Completely non-destructive.

Obviously this process is a bit fiddly, as you need to have a host machine around to boot the N900 into MeeGo.

Alternatively, just installing the n900 uboot kernel from extras-devel really isn't that risky, and wont effect your system at all. But will boot MeeGo when there's a Micro SD card with MeeGo on it inserted in the N900.

I can't stress enough taking out your SIM card though, if you get an SMS message, or phone call obviously this is outside of Maemo and that data will not be there when you boot back to Maemo.

i'm still confused by this harmatten/meego business, apologies.

i understand that harmatten was the codename for maemo6 before the maemo/moblin merge resulted in meego.

but what is it now?

when stkeeps says that nokia will release a harmatten device does this mean that nokia will release a device using the MeeGo 1.2 OS with nokia's hardware and UI customisation?

I'm confused, in Maemo 5 I can see SMSes and phone logs in an sqlite database on the flash storage. Doesn't MeeGo also store this information on the file system? It seems to me that if you get SMSes or phone calls while running MeeGo, that you just need to merge some data. I'm not saying that's trivial (different address books, different file formats, clocks, ..., etc), but what am I missing here and how is the SIM involved?
