In my opinion it should be very simple:
  • Sell WP7 devices to all the guys who want one (there are a lot out there, especially in the U.S.A.)
  • Sell N9 like devices to all the guys who want one

They are simply not equally and the target audience is very different. The Nokia board seems to don't understand!

Why should Nokia lose all customers who don't want to buy a iPhone like device to the Android manufactures?

MP = Mobile Phone, it's the division that Meltemi sits underneath.
I don't know if he's exaggerating or not, but I certainly hope not.
Even so, it's unlikely we'll get Maemo-based smartphones geared for the high-end.
If we're lucky there might eventually be one that creeps into smartphone hw territory.

MP!?

AFAIK Konttori is working on lowlevel driver stuff for WP now? Or do I remember totally wrong? :O

He told me MP. I originally heard the same thing as you too.
I guess he can be in MP, and still be doing WP work.

Linux-based Operating Systems come in "many" shapes and sizes...
The Linux kernel (there's many flavors) has been used in embedded platforms, & small form-factor devices since it's inception.

Yes, but OS using only the linux kernel would lose most of the benefits of having Linux in the first place. So in practice it will be "stuck" with much more than just the kernel.

Intomobile's review of Lumia 800 is pretty epic. Not so much as a review, but as a look at what happened at Nokia during the past couple of years and what the the new Nokia is like.

Nokia Lumia 800: Microsoft doesn’t have to buy Nokia, they already did

"And that pretty much sums up Nokia. With the Lumia 800 they essentially slapped together some parts from China in a body that was designed for the company’s last flagship device and then loaded up Microsoft’s software on it. With the next version of Windows Phone a little bit more effort will be put on making it look like it actually had some design decisions made by the folks sitting in Finland, but really, all ******** aside, Nokia isn’t in charge of their future anymore.

Microsoft is."

It's still unclear to me what you're trying to suggest.
What is your point exactly?

The point was, that in my understanding "Linux kernel" alone won't do much if you want to create a Linux based smart phone OS. You will need GNU libs and a load of other surrounding software. So you are, to some extent, stuck with whatever legacy (good or bad) that stuff brings with it.

Well of course. That's not necessarily an inherently bad thing.
And every "OS" has legacy stuff tied into libraries etc.

Worth a read: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/03/nokia_symbian/

Quota from the article
Quote:

Exclusive Nokia is said to be hastening the demise of its legacy Symbian platform, cancelling the development of all but one new Symbian-based device. Although Nokia Belle updates will continue to ship to existing customers, only one new model – a successor to the N8 high-end camera phone – will reach the market, the Register understands.

“We now believe that we will sell fewer Symbian devices than we previously anticipated,” said Elop.
symbian was still profitable for Nokia. one stupid announcement by Mr. Elop ruined everything.
