I don't believe that deal with T-Mobile means that Three will start using T-M's 2G infrastructure, as they don't have the license to use 2G spectrum. Three will only use 3G through merged T-M's sites, remaining within 2G roaming deal with Orange (ultimately T-Orange).

Well the comment from Peter@maemo was that it's "some newer 3 Sims", which implies that it might not be a complete black out (as someone with a 3Sim which is a few years old, I'd really like to have this confirmed!)

"When the N900 launches it’ll be compatible with most networks, although it won’t initially be available on new 3G SIM cards from 3 in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark and Austria – a software update is in the pipeline and is slated to become available before the end of the year."

I'm starting to consider following idea: pop-out to Nokia Flagship Store, which is just 10 minute walking distance from my work, if N900 is in stock there, cancel MPD online order and buy the same MPD contract within store itself. That way I might get my N900 before this weekend. Hmmm... ;)

Did you order the vodafone or the T-mobile contract with MPD?

you think the nokia main store will do those third party contracts with based with T Mobile? I was assuming it will be on sale but sim free only from there.

Me too. I'm wondering though whether the flagship store will have that deal though, considering that MPD said that they have filled their quota for T-mobile orders.

Nope, MPD is excusively offering contracts within NFS itself. I have confirmed that personally when I was there last week (and got surprised a bit too!).

If they will be able to offer the same deal for T-Mobile in-store as they did on website before this weekend, then the choice is simple. :) Otherwise I'll wait for delivery from website.

Hey guys,
New member here - decided to register and post after lurking for a few weeks.
I'm new to buying contracts online and don't know what to do. I have a N95 8GB currently on Vodafone, with the contract due to end very soon.
Should I buy one on MPD as an "upgrade" option or as a new contract (I'm not bothered about keeping my number)
Any help would greatly appreciated :)
Cheers,
Rhos.

Re: N900 UK Networks

I just had an interesting phone call with the London Nokia Flagship store.

They have two contracts available for the N900:

T-mobile:

Cost: £35pm (handset free of charge)
Contract duration: 18 months
X-net minutes: 700
Texts: Unlimited
Mobile Web: Unlimited (FUP 1Gb/m)

Vodafone:

Cost: £35pm (handset free of charge)
Contract duration: 24 months
X-net minutes: 600
Texts: Unlimited
Mobile Web: Unlimited (FUP 500Mb/m)

T-mobile seems a clear winner, right? Well, maybe not. The chap I spoke to said that the T-mobile phones will be both locked to the T-mobile network, and operator branded. He confirmed that this meant T-mobile will release their own version of the firmware, and nokia provided firmware will not work. Vodafone will be completely unbranded / unlocked.

I don't mind a network lock so much, but the operator branding just isn't acceptable, especially without knowing how easy it will be to circumvent. Then again, I suspect the employee I talked to gets a better commission on Vodafone sales... What are the chances he doesn't have his facts straight?

Either way, all of you with MPD T-mobile contracts might want to get a bit nervous! :D

I called the flagship store directly about an hour ago. They still have no idea there... the salesperson said it should be available this month....

I don't believe that, tbh. If that was the case, the T-Mobile would most likely be selling N900 directly through their sales channels, not through 3rd party retailers like MPD. Why T-Mobile would ever bother customising/locking a handset they don't actually sell themselves (unless they ARE planning to do so, which might also be the case - who knows)? Also, before I placed an order with MPD, I've called them specifically asking about simlock status, they confirmed there will be no lock on the handset.

Nonetheless, that is getting interesting and I am really curious what the final outcome will be!

I hope you're right! I'm just reporting what the Nokia Flagship Store employee told me (at 15:49 GMT according to my phone log). It lost him a sale so I can't really see why he'd make it up, beyond being honestly mistaken of course.

I'm sure it will all sort itself out soon enough.

Cheers,

Just seen this reported in another thread, but MPD's website seems to have completely removed all trace of the N900. The thumbnail of the device exists on this page:

http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/...okia/b434.aspx

But when you click on it, up comes an error page. I wonder what's going on!

Guess you caught it during redesign or something as there is now a huge N900 image on the homepage!

The linked page says "Available on: Vodafone"
No mentions of other networks or any contract deals, just a Coming Soon box:

That N900 banner has been there for a while.

I'm guessing they are doing the same thing as Amazon UK... too many people pre-ordering online. Guess they want to limit / control orders since they are backed up the wazoo.

Right. While I was on the phone with T-Mobile's CS couple of weeks ago asking for PAC code, the lady asked me what phone I am after. I told N900, so she said that in their internal system that phone is listed as exclusive to Orange. I've double checked with her if she's looking at Nokia en-nine-zero-zero - yes she was.

Tbh, I am not concerned at all with any rumours whatsoever, just waiting for my MPD order to be successfully fulfulled within next few days, really. Fingers crossed!

The best news is that the Vodafone PAYG price has gone back down to £393 (having started there, then changed to £449 for a few weeks). Add £4 shipping.

My First Post..
I've been lurking here for a few weeks now and have gathered lots of useful info, thanks all.

Just wanted to say that i called 3 today to get my PAC code in preparation for my n900...i was offered an N97 which the guy said was "virtually the same" as the n900!!!! i nearly sprayed tea all over my screen!!
When i asked him to elaborate he said it was "basically the same hardware"
So, you've all been lying to me then? :-)

I checked with MPD before I bought it. All of their phones are "Sim Free" I could only get it on a vodafone contract though.

Just been on the phone to Orange retentions and they have no information on when or if Orange will be selling the N900 direct.
Got offered a great deal with an N97 mini but think I'll hold out for the 900.

Don't think too long and take MPD's pay as you go for £393 - bargain price and handset is unlocked/unbranded!
