OK, everyone, our plan worked, please commence posting in this thread hysterically.

I WANT MY 3D DRIVERS!!!

Oops, sorry, wrong thread. :)

Note that I don't expect the DDP to start moving before the device is officially released, so please redirect all your possible pandemoniums to the usual "when is it released" threads. :D

This morning I have been greeted by the availability of the "Discounted Devices Program: N900" on my forum.nokia.com page :)

I've ordered :) :) :) (fingers crossed) and my credit card has been instantly billed :D

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Cool, also available in Germany :)

Just one thing I noticed (and I´m not complaining - I´m just saying):

Quote:

Return Policy
THE DEVICES THAT ARE SOLD THROUGH THE DDP DO NOT HAVE WARRANTY. If the device that you receive is defect, you can return it within one (1) week from the purchase with a written note explaining what the defect is. For the return details, please email DDP.program@nokia.com.
My N900 which is now about 2 month in use already has dust inside the display. So you better take good care of the discounted devices :)

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

I have it too, ordered immediately :-) 250 EUR, shipping and taxes were reported as 0 and my card was charged twice - 250EUR and 1EUR. I wonder where it is shipping from (card transaction says NOKIA ITALIA SPA) and whether VAT will be charged later or is included.

Wow, no WARRANTY???

That's really scary... not sure I'll get it then..

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

If anything happens to n900, there is a chance to buy another n900 with DDP? (returning the first n900?)

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

The lack of warranty seems weird to me ... I mean, if the unit is defective, you would expect Nokia to fix or replace it, regardless of a discount.

This is more like we're getting a good price because we're buying on the gray market than because we're valued.

Because you're getting it at a discounted price and through DDP meaning you're only using the device for development.

I doubt Nokia will fix or replace the device. If they do, everyone would be buying from DDP and not at retail price.

well, not everybody gets accesso to the DDP discounted devices...so most people will get it at retail price. And I agree that this is a bit odd to not offer standard warranty

Simple explanation, because it's heavily discounted..offering full standard warranty means people ordering through DDP will resell the device.

I think you're rather missing the point (and scope) of this program. It applies to a small number of people, who have already demonstrated substantial ongoing interest in the Maemo platform -- not a group likely to resell the one unit they can buy through the program.

anidel 2009-11-09 11:35

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

The "heavily discounted" is not an excuse. We got the 770, N800 and N810 for 99€ with the Developer Discount Program (not via Forum Nokia though) and it came all the way with the region specific warranty (i.e. 2 years in Italy for example).

Anyway, the DDP program page states up to 2 devices per company and states also no warranty and states VAT excluded.
But we know the price seems to be final, thus the VAT part doesn't apply to the N900, we know also that we can buy up to ONE device (it's stated in the N900 page itself)... so may be also the WARRANTY part does not apply to the N900.

I've emailed them and waiting for an answer.
If Quim could also shed some light, that would be great.

Aniello

The T&C on the DDP sites specifically states that you are NOT allowed to resell the device before 6 months time.

Also from the same page:

Quote:

As you are buying the device(s) for professional use, you agree that the sale of device(s) is not subject to any legislation (such as Distance Selling Directive) governing the consumer transactions.
and there's an NDA to sign as well. While I appreciate the offer by Forum Nokia, it's clearly aimed at commercial entities that hope to make money from the platform instead of the hobbyist who wants to improve it so for me personally the attached strings and risk are not worth it and I'm going to have to decline.

Which of course makes me appreciate the Maemo Devices loaner program so much more :-)

johnkzin 2009-11-09 11:52

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

It showed up on my eStore page as well. But I wont be ordering for a few weeks*.

I don't mind the lack of warranty. Well, let me re-state ... it _might_ cause me to not buy it, after I think about it for a bit, but I don't feel any harsh feelings about it -- it is what it is. The terms of the discount has strings. So be it. I'm glad someone noticed it so that I'm definitely informed if I decide to buy, though.

(* thanks to a weird billing mistake somewhere else, I'll have some unexpected "found money" in about 4 weeks, so it's a matter of how I want to buy the device... but, that said, the one hangup I still have about the N900 is "keeping the N900's Contacts and Calendar in sync with Google Contacts and Calendar"; that will likely make the difference between whether I buy, or not)

I suspect that the NDA part (and maybe also the warranty part, hopefully) is standard boilerplate text for the more general Developers Programs for other platforms. I vaguely remember Quim stating that they used Forum Nokia as a convenient way to sell the devices to the developers (most of the e-store framework being already there)...

Wasn't the DDP Team supposed to send us another mail to alert us when that happened ?... Nora is such a tease :-)

Do these coupons still expire at end of the year? Or has that date been pushed back too?

With Christmas coming, I don't think I will be able to use this until mid-january.

We haven't been particularly civil towards her in this thread...

Maybe I will order another N900 regular, and use this one as real device, with the DDP one for development and testing.

PS: Why am I able to edit the qty field

To order:
  • Log in to Forum Nokia.
  • Go to Pro.
  • Go to eStore.
  • If N900 is not there, go to some other page on Forum Nokia Pro, and return to eStore. Then it should be there. (I didn't have to log in and out. YMMV.)

I ordered but I didn't get any confirmation email ...
Does someone have any experience dealing with Nokia's estore ?

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

The N900 has shown up on my eStore. Now I have two questions (that may have been answered but not in the last three pages):
  1. For U.S. shipment, will the N900 be unlocked?
  2. Will it be a "for the U.S." device?

I talked to AT&T and they said no problem with using it on their network (assuming it will, indeed, be unlocked), just switch the SIM card from my current phone to the N900.

I recall a discussion about the phone being unlocked but want to make sure.

Neither did I - no confirmation email, no VAT (but my credit card was billed).

Do you have any url for those ?

I logged on http://www.forum.nokia.com/ but i do not find any "Pro" menu.

Were we not supposed to receive a mail of some sort when ordering the device was possible ?

How it could be locked when it's not bought from an operator?

As I understand all the devices are the same (with us keyboard layaout). Don't know about chargers and such.

Yes, that's a good point (not bought by an operator so not locked). I should have thought about that.

Your statement regarding chargers is an excellent one.

I'm a bit concerned about the no-warranty but since I'm not riding a motorcycle anymore and it's not subjected to extreme low temperatures (below 10F), it should last a while. :)
