Maybe..
But its the same with all the others.. I had a SE P990..It was just the same but worse.. WM Android Its always the same..Same **** diffrent names :D With a free OS we at least have a chanse to change stuff for the better :) Its just me thats perfect ;) |

I feel the same exact way, but I'm willing to give Nokia the chance to redeem itself with the N900. Though I'm not going to wait for Maemo 6 to fix it. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
I got burnt by the dropping of VoIP from the N96. I felt bitter about it for many months. The only thing bringing me back was the fact that maemo appears far more open.

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
I think its up to the community..
Dont see Nokia as the saviour. But i guess we all see it in diffrent ways :) |

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Iphone ..Yes..And i think its one of few thing thats good with Iphone.
Android 2 ..Dont you have to root it first ? WM..Yes some will run WM7.. But my point is that you cant trust them that you will get many updates at all.. I would like pay for updates to a new OS if its needed but in 1.5 year or so its time to buy a new phone so .. Enough OT from me |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Can we all wait for at least more than a day after the accouncement before deciding that Nokia will not be implementing Ovi maps for the N900?
It probably is high time that Nokia supports device software upgrades for the high end devices, but come on declaring that its going the way of GM :) kinda early dont you think? |

I'll wait a while longer before I purchase n900 now.
I'll prob still buy one during the summer months but will def think about other phones before I get this one. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
I emailed nokia customer care directly to see what they had to say this and here is their reply:
Thank you for e-mailing the Nokia Care Contact Center. We are glad that you are interested in the Nokia N900 Based on your concern, no it will only be developed for future maemo devices, not the n900, because the ovi maps that is preinstalled on the N900 is ovi maps version 1.0 and it cannot be updated to the ovi maps 3.03, which has free ovi maps turn by turn navigation. I hope the information provided proves useful. If you have any additional question, please don't hesitate to contact us again. To ensure proper handling of your case, kindly continue using the current subject line Thank you very much for your email. Have a great day. Best Regards, Mark Bañas Email Specialist Nokia Inc. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
I love it.
I don't really believe tech support people, they're often not provided with up-to-date information, before it hits the web (for some strange reason) But we have the Nokia VP, the Maemo team, and Nokia officials all saying different things. A 30 page thread on Nokias official Maemo forum, discussing back'n'forth, a forum that the Maemo MARKETING guy reads and posts to, and several other Maemo people. But still none of the free beta users of Nokias new major device, and frontrunner for their next big mobile OS, the N900, are given ANY clue as to whether they'll get the new Ovi maps, that Nokia will be providing for almost all but their most basic phones. It makes Nokia seem SO professional and in complete control of their forward plans, and marketing! /s |

Yes, the information was very useful to make a lot of N900 owners to not buy any Nokia product again!!! Even if this "Email Specialist" doesn't have sure about that, it would be at least a lack of alignment inside the company... |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Cannot be updated ? lol
big joke, huh ? |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Maybe they realize that their answer is "no we will never give you a decent OVI maps version on Maemo 5", and they know that if they tell us that it will FOR SURE make them look bad. They'd rather have us stew and wonder.

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Why do I get the feeling Nokia is only doing this to keep symbian alive a little longer since everyone wants maemo nowaday. Nokia is notorious for leaving users behind each time they move on to newer better things...but somehow, they can't leave symbian behind....so they did this to clear their conscious but then only the newer symbian (FP2) devices are receiving this update.
Also, if the n900 gets free navigation, sygic will be pissed since they are just about to announce their own app. Doesn't matter, I hope a REAL app gets release soon. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Since my post got drowned in the discussion here I am trying again as per below.I deleted my first post and placed it again. Im sorry. I hope some people out there would so kind to reply
THANKS Refering the Nokia Map Loader you can add voice to your ovi maps vers. 1.01 when connecting with n900 as well as adding new countries in mass storage but how do you actually implement it so the voice works on the N900? Thanks |

if we as the high paying consuments are kicked in the butt like this, I don't see any reason to stay at nokia products, if I know any other company treats their customers much better :-/ |

I doubt there are many people who will stick with a fully developed for N900 once the next one is out in a year or two. However an underdeveloped N900 may lead to people being open to other brands. If someone's unhappy, the grass will always be greener on the other side. The N82 led me to the N900 eventually. Lack of support and who knows, if Apple put in a good 5MP camera and allowed me to use mass storage mode so I could stay away from iTunes... I could reconsider a brand switch next time I'm after a new phone. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
I don't understand why Ovi Maps 3.03 is not compatible with n900? It's only maps after all. It's application like any other. Or not?

Maybe it could be ported to Maemo but I take it by the fact that they started over from zero to mean writing a new one might be easier than porting the Symbian one. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)

3.03 is for Symbian. Maemo has 1.01, which is rather a bad joke. Nokia seems not really commited to Maemo customers an only will provide something better for next generation (M6). Currently Nokia seems to have stopped further support for M5. Personally I believe they might even let drop Maemo completely. Alternatives are free Navit (needs developers....) or, if you havent yet a Maemo device, you might think about Android Milestone, where there is google Maps + Navigation and a number of free OSM based off-line navigation apps. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
You can't compare the version numbers of Maemo Ovi Maps to Symbian Ovi Maps. For example, Maemo Ovi Maps 1.0 has 3D buildings, which Symbian Ovi (Nokia) Maps didn't have in version 1.0.
So by saying Maemo has "only" version 1.0 compared to Symbian is meaningless. It's a completely different product which happens to have the same name. |

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Once the maemo ovi maps gets the feature for voice turn by turn, it will probably be free. give it time and we will eventually get up to date.
its funny Wiener how you think Nokia is going to completely drop Maemo. obviously symbian is the majority over maemo, so thats how they are going to prioritize. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Maemo Ovi ver 1.01 already has turn by turn. Just press the directions button after you put a route in. Its missing the voice sythasyser to speak it to you.

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
No problem with priorizazion on Symbian.
BUT: read the reply from Nokia support earlier this thread. read interview with Nokia VP. |

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
All the posts here are highly speculative, and many of them provide conclusions without rationale. I think one has to wait at least what the next two weeks bring before jumping to all these naive "I sell my N900" and "I hate Nokia" conclusions. Also, the blog posts that are cited here over and over again contain no reliable information. I'm sure more information on Nokia's strategy will leak over the next couple of weeks.
Here is my own speculation: Phones that are compatible to the new navigation application gained significantly in value, but their price remains the same. On the other hand, N900 has "lost" in value (relatively), because it doesn't have this feature (yet). I doubt that many people will still consider buying an N900 unless there is a definite statement from Nokia that they will bring the advanced navigation features to that device. Therefore, I believe Nokia has two options: (1) Announce similar navigation features for the N900 soon. (2) Not care about future sales of the N900. Everything one reads in the press about the surprising success of the N900, the dual platform strategy (Symbian for phones, Maemo for PDAs), and the fact that Symbian is not considered competitive with other smartphone OSes indicates that (2) is not an option. So, here is my prophecy: Within the next two week there will be an official statement that similar navigation features will be made available for the N900 "soon". Not sure what "soon" will mean, but I'd hope within the next 3 months or so. |
