sms only for mobile option is very stupid! here in holland we can send sms to landlines too. This means the option will reduce in functionality!

Why not? Here in Germany it's also no problem to send a SMS to landlines. The phone handles a SMS the same way my cellphone does...

You Sir just made my day :D:D

But it's true, SMS to landlines is possible, same here in Belgium, BUT: it did clutter Contacts having several Privat/Office Numbers, it always takes you a while to figure out which button to press

It would have been better to have it as a setting. But that has it's own difficulties.

As far as I know it's only a option to disable sending sms to landlines. If you want, you can enable this!

I find it very bad. Many people got a old analoge phone. And the SMS is read once by a computer voice instead of sending a SMS to the display of the phone. So when you send it by accident to the landline number instead of the mobile number you could be shure, the receiver wouldn't understand the content of the SMS.

lold

i know its possible in germany, but i have yet to meet someone who actually did so. i dont know how our telephone would behave when i send a sms to it.
i dont want to try too, its not worth the 20 cents to me xD

and now that i think about it... who came up with that idea? who thought sending sms to landline is a good idea? what were they thinking? this truly is insanity...

It doesn't look like the update, no - the changelog in there covers the differences between the pre-release and release firmwares, so looks very old to me.

I agree.
The packages comparision shows it's got Qt 4.5.3.

From what's been said, it should be at least Qt 4.6.

- File Manager allows sharing of any files. (no more need for Petrovich)
- Clear device data and restore settings option. (possibly full factory default)
- Group chat possible in Instant Messaging
- Search by typing for applications in App Launcher.
- Sticky tags for videos and photos.

Are you sure about that? I see nothing in the code that implements this. Or anything like this in the changelogs:

http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle...commits/master

From looking at the manual (pg 115), it seems this is in App Manager, not the launcher.

Turn-by-turn directions are already there, it is the list you get when the route is calculated. Turn-by-turn voice navigation and automatic re-routing is what you should be looking for...but it's not there!

IMHO in PR1.2 OVI Maps won't improve much, if at all.
But believe me - I want to be mistaken:)

For me the most important feature that is missing from the ovi maps is that I can't search for an address if I'm not connected on the internet. The weird thing is that all the addresses are on the tablet already, in the map database... I don't understand what was so hard for the developers to make a search option...
Voice navigation, automatic re-routing would be nice, but is no use if you can't search for an address without internet (I don't have a data plan on my cell phone).

<rant>
I'll say it again, what is the use of brainstorm if Nokia doesn't give a .... about what we want? All this "Community Council Election" and "Candidates Debate" seems like kids playing when you realize that they don't have any kind of power. What is this "Community Council Election" good for? Would the "Elected Officials" give us better Ovi Maps (or anything else)? If not, what is it for?

I haven't managed it to search for a Adress. (Germany)
For me it is only possible to search for a City. (and then search the street with your eyes on the map) :(

Searching for a Restaurant in the City you are at the moment is totally impossible! I haven't found it.

From a leaked PR1.2 User Guide:

"Tip: To avoid data transfer costs, you can also use Maps
without an internet connection, and browse the maps that
are saved in your device or memory card."

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2) and its release date

The main problem is the lack of margin of error of the search engine. If you don't know the name of what you are looking for exactly, you're lost.

The data is definitely here, but the search engine just sucks.

Cheers

This was available for a long time, you can browse the maps (move around, find streets with you eyes), but you can't search for a location.

So when is the speculation for the new firmware release anyway? Before people mentioned it would be end of Feb or early March but that's out the time frame window now!
Besides why are we all focussing on the new new PR 1.2 release when there is Meego coming to us at the end of March?

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong :-P

MeeGo is the long-term successor to Maemo. PR1.2 is an official update from Nokia.

MeeGo will (hopefully) be relevant down the line, but not for at least the next 6+ months unless you're a developer or other propeller-head ;) looking to start playing around early.

@badboyuk I'm not sure where your getting your information about Meego.

Meego has yet to be officially confirmed to come to the N900 as a Nokia-supported instance (e.g. coming with Nokia apps like Ovi Maps). It's only been confirmed as a developer distro (e.g. for developers and people who want to see what it's like). It is in no way suitable for end-users. At least those who value a working device.

I think that's the reason why Nokia has been mum on Meego on the N900 myself, since most of their employees are working on Meego on the next device, while other employees are working on bug fixes for Maemo 5. Leaving little time to make sure Meego doesn't come to the N900 as a bug-fest (if they haven't decided not to officially support Meego on the N900).

Meego = next operating system (not just maemo anymore, it's Maemo + Moblin = Meego). And it's slated to run on multiple devices with different hardware configurations.

QT 4.6 = Nokia's answer to incompatibility across different devices. Ideally you can take an app programmed in QT 4.6 on one device and run it on another device as long as they both have the same QT 4.6 libraries. Though how well this will work remains to be seen (e.g. QT in Linux and QT in Windows)

PR 1.2 = next Maemo 5 update. It is coming with several bugfixes, enhancements, and QT 4.6. E.g. you would be able to run apps programmed in Meego using QT 4.6 on the N900 (and vice versa).

Hope that helps.

...we're waiting for a public release of the PR1.2 version of Maemo 5. It's going to contain Qt4.6 by default. Don't worry about MeeGo for now, it's not relevant to the discussion.

I'm no expert but as I understand it;

PR1.2 is the next update bringing with it qt4.6.

this update will also bring Flash 10.1

QT4.6 apps can then be used on different OS's eg Symbian.

So would this mean the next update of Ovi Maps using QT4.6 could be easily made to work on the N900?
