This missing desktop+ is the worst thing that has happened to any of the Nokia tablets, I think. I feel lucky that I already have it installed on my tablet, but I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't have it.

I am very happy about my 9 desktops.

But I would like to scroll up and down and not only left and right.
I want my deskop to be a torus.

When I'm scrolling up the desktop of 3*left should appear and when I'scrolling down the desktop of 3*right should appear.

Getting 9 screens is easy enough once you can find the instructions. Just install Matan's modified hildon home and enter this code in terminal (as root):

gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/active -t list --list-type int [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9]

See more instructions in this link (seems overly complicated but at least you get some pictures of some really hot desktops).

Desktop+ has been re-released by its developper, look for the official thread on this site.

But I have an issue, now that I have my 9 screens, from time to time a lot of my widgets will stop responding to touch. Meaning I could click on them and nothing at all would happen. I have tried a "killall hildon-home" but that just removes most widgets from my desktops. I am forced to restart all the time. I wanted to know, is the command killall hildon-home the equivalent of ending task Explorer.exe on a Windows system?

Also, for those who can't change background and/or are lazy like me, just assign whatever wallpaper you want on desktop1, then open a file manager app (I use CuteExplorer since by default it will open home/user and you just have to click on Show Hidden), copy the background-1.png file, paste it, and rename it to 6 or wtv desktop you want that wallpaper on ;)

so...Nobody else is having problems with their 9 homescreens? I also have to reassign at least half my widgets at every restart :(
Do you think it's actually one of my app that is causing the issue? I haven't really installed much since I tweaked hildon-home/desktop

Desktop Execution command Widget causes the hildon-home to crash. If you have it running, remove it.

The application you are looking for is MaeModder by Dany-69 (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=67989), and it now does the multiple desktops automatically, and allows one to select the backgrounds for each desktop setup. That is just one of many things this brilliant application can do.

No need to do this, just download from the APP Manager on your N900 an application called Active Desktop Statusbar Icon. It sits next to your ISP signal icon or WIFI icon and tells you which desktop you are on. It is very discreet and does the job perfectly.

For the guys with the missing or disappearing icons you need "desktop activity manager" this will,let you save and restore different desktop set ups, saves so much time when your desktop items go walkabout.:D

I have the 9 desktops up and running
I use homescreen selector

but can I hell change the background images tried all sorts
they must be a simple fix

kinda defeats the object of having 9 screens then been a pain to change the background image.

One way to avoid the pain aspect is to load Live Wallpaper, then go to Settings and check One theme in all views in the Live Wallpaper Settings. This puts the same wallpaper in all nine screens, but since the wallpaper is live, it doesn't seem so boring as you might think.

Edit: Someone should create some nine-screen themes for us...

Ok, it's "easy" in terms of how to do it, but not as easy as it is for the default 4.

Install filebox, and you need to name the image 'background-5/6/7/8/9.png' it HAS to be .png. Use filebox to put it in the .backgrounds folder under opt/usr (i think. i'm doing this from memory so i may be a bit out, but i'm pretty sure it's opt/usr/.backgrounds). the '.' before 'backgrounds' means it's a hidden folder, so you need filebox to find it and in settings click 'show hidden folders'.

That's the folder you need to place backgrounds to change the added homescreens, and they need to be titled 'background-5.png' for example to change the 5th homescreen

Richwhite, that is a long winded way and there is no need to go to all that effort. ;)

As I mentioned in the post above yours, Maemodder can to this in a jiffy. Here is another link to the application from this forum

( wont install says some applications packages required for installation are missing :O(



I'd like to be able to have a desktop contact and with one click it dials that number not open the contact.

Also id like to be able to change the desktop media player size to a lot bigger so when my phone is in my cars cradle the play or next buttons are Hugh to work along with FM transmitter.

Maemodder is good, but i don't have it installed as i haven't installed anything lately (broken usb socket so can't flash). Others won't install anything from testing/devels and others won't know about the app.

Kudos for posting the link to it - can't help knowing 2 ways to do something though :)

Why do you need your USB Socket? - The N900 has one of the best internet browsers, you can just follow this forum from your N900, cut and paste the scripts into X Terminal and run most of the scripts from there.

Better still (and no need to use USB cable again) you can use WIFI to connect from your PC to your N900. There is a great tutorial on how to do this [How to connect N900 with PC using WIFI], then once you have made the connection, within WinSCP is an option to load Putty.exe which looks and feels just like X-Terminal, but it runs off your PC. You can then run all the scripts that you see on this forum through putty. As you are updating on your N900 directly, changes are instant.

I dowonloaded the cssu, but I didn't see the 9 home screen option on the manage view options. it only lets me set 4 and i won't scroll right to add more screens. it worked when it i first downloaded it, but no the option is gone. i need help please thanks!

Maybe you can try to type this in your x terminal:

sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install --reinstall hildon-home

Then reboot.

did you look CAREFULLY....the extra screens are black with a semi hidden scroll bar to see them,tricky to see on my theme...

Have you tried Activating the views?

1 click or tap on the screen and goto Desktop Menu (where you can add contacts /add widget and other stuff..)
2 Click or tap the Manage Views
3 select or deselect how many desktop you like to keep.

Note: those new desktop should display blank or black since there is no background on it. you will have to manually add backgrounds once u active those.

Thank you guys for the help and advice. I have double checked everything and no solution to my problem. Everything was working just fine, even with the theme customizer install. I guess i will reflash or just deal with the 4 home screen for the mean time

Can anyone help?? ive installed the CSSU update and it seemed to be workin fine, i set up all 9 screens and started to add the widgets and shortcuts and links
then i started to notice a few glitches, a program that used to work ok, Pessonal Countdown wouldnt allow me to change the background settings, and my emails dont want to refresh/update and also if i tap the status bar to change bluetooth or time or add an update etc, the tab doesnt open correctly it shows a thin line just off the top othe screen,

I don't know, but this doesn't sound like it has anything to do with 9 screens. It sounds to me frankly like you might need to reflash soon. You might install backupmenu or at least run the regular backup because bad things might be happening soon.
