Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Seems there is some regression in the latest version, I'm not sure what yet as I can't reproduce this on either of my devices atm but I'm investigating it.

UPDATE: I think I've found it, the lockfile is not checked properly so it might be keeping the downloader from activating:
rm -f /var/lock/fmms_dl.lock
should solve it until I get a patch out.
Hopefully this is whats causing the problems

Slow fMMS sending and receiving

Dear frals,

Congratulations for your great app!!!

I'm having a problem with fMMS 1.0.3. Both sending and receiving a MMS is extremely slow in my device. I use Havoc mode and I'm connected to a 3.5G network (usually 3G). I've tried sending a MMS to other mobile phone and also to my own phone (text + small picture 30kb MMS). In both cases, after tapping the send button, fMMS seems to hang more than 2 minutes sending the MMS. After that, it reports "MMS sent" or something like that. When sent to my own phonenumber, the MMS delays a lot to be notified by the N900 and when opening fMMS it keeps "trying to download MMS" during a long time. When sent to the other mobile phone, the MMS has not been received (it is a N95 8Gb in Movistar network), although my operator has already billed for it as a MMS.

I'm connected to Pepephone in Spain (http://www.pepephone.com/ppm_web/ppm...t=1&p_idetip=4), which uses Vodafone's network. I'm not connected to any other internet connection (Wifi or gprs) while testing fMMS anf the APN seems correctly configured (I've cross checked many times).

Configured connection parameters for MMS are:
APN: mms.pepephone.com
Username: wap@wap
Password: wap125
Use Proxy: Yes
Proxy: 212.073.032.010
Port number: 80
Message server: http://mms.pepephone.com/servlets/mms

Do you know anything about this?

Thank you.

Iker.

Havoc is slow because it's doing a lot of name resolution and other stuff, not much can be done about it I'm afraid. Use 'Rude' if you wan't faster sending :)

If the MMS is properly delivered to your N900 when you send to yourself but not other phones it might be because of the reasons Schturman mentioned here: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=320 :)

Dear fMMS developer i have a question :) dont laugh guys, I'm serious i dont need your comments that N900 sucks or Nokia never listens...so here it is.....

After you got it 100% working with no or little issues will it be possible to contact Nokia and ask them to integrate it to PR 1.3? since all the hard work has been done by you ( for which we all grateful) how difficult could that be to just add it as a part of package in conversions app ?

Maybe an stupid question. If I download fMMS 1.1.4 deb file from the garage web and install it on my own (not adding the devel-extras repository), do I will have problems with future updates of fMMS? Do I need to download any other dependent package or it will download automatically? Sorry, my knoweledge on Linux is very limited.

Cheers!

Please, could you show me the exact process to upgrade to 1.1.4 withouth adding the extras-devel catalog? I can download the 1.1.4 .deb file but I don't know if installing this file would cause bad update consequences when the updated fMMS appear in extras catalog.

I've read this in http://wiki.maemo.org/Installing_applications :
The major disadvantage to installing .debs locally as opposed to installing from a repository is that you wont be automatically notified of updates to the package. Also dependency installation is not automatic.

And what about package dependencies? Do you recommend me using dpkg in the console or the GUI package installer?

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

i have the following problem: it notifies me about a received mms and the header is displayed. if i press it i get something similar "failed to retrieve/download mms", so the only way to get to the mms ist to start a internet connection, it cannot do so by itself..

but my biggest problem: ever since it downloaded the mms, if i go and open up ovistore via icon or want to refresh mail it automatically chooses the mms connection instead of my provider internet connection although i have the internet connection set to connect to my provider automatically under "settings". if i however open the webbrowser it correctly chooses my provider internet. also the omweather widget auto refreshes using mms connection instead of my providers inet. what is going on?????!

the user -=Hot|Ice=- seems to have the same problem, he posted in this thread on 05-30-10 , 10:32 PM

how do i/we resolve this?

From what I understand this is a known issue which has no fix. From what I have read it's due to how the N900 handels several different connection types.

Correct me if I am wrong please :)

thanks for the answer, if that is the case, the situation is a real mess! i really would appreciate if the author of the app could find a solution. in the meatime i found a "solution" of last resort: i deinstall fmms and got rid of the connection point with fapn!

do i have to go through this every time i download a mms?

did i do anything wrong beforehand? answers very welcomed!

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Question 1: how can i send MMS with multi-byte character title

I use the latest version of fMMS(v1.1.4), when I sent MMS with multibyte characters(like CJK characters) in message title, it can't be received or opened.

but if i sent a MMS with single-byte character in message title and multi-byte characters in message body, it CAN be received and opened correctly.

Question 2: Can the text in message body be aligned left?

it seems all the text in MMS body is aligned center, is it passible to render the text to be aligned left? or give us a text render configure option.

thanks a lot.

Make sure to update from the extras-devel latest build ( which fixed my issues on PR1.2 ) also double check your APN settings. If you aren't sure there is a wiki about the settings you need for AT&T.

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Hi Frals, first of all you are a legend and Nokia need to get their wallets out in my opinion!

I have investigated every post and looked for any videos or advice on Google & Youtube but the latest video or advice tells me install fapn etc, which 1.1.4 says is unnecessary and I have uncovered no answers, so here goes!

I have uninstalled fapn and my previous version of fmms (1.1.1) and installed the latest version of fmms 1.1.4 only.

It worked fine previously, but when i got a message to alert me to a new mms message waiting to be downloaded, I had to manually switch to the Vodafone MMS apn that I set up using fapn. This was fine but it also automatically connected to the Vodafone MMS connection instead of my Internet one in everyday use, which was very annoying.

I tried the advice that you gave: If the device is auto connecting to the MMS APN instead of the regular internet one automatically; runing:
/opt/fmms/fmms_config.py
in the terminal should correct this - please verify by checking in "Internet Connections" as well as edit the access point to make sure all settings got changed.
but this did not work and it still connected to the Vodafone MMS apn. This is what prompted me to go for the newer version and was very pleased that you had updated!

As far as I understand it all I now needed to do is download the latest fMMS (vers 1.1.4) and it will automatically set up the APN. It didn't so I set about going into the settings in fMMS and manually entering them. This was fairly simple (using these settings http://wiki.maemo.org/MMS#Vodafone_UK) but the "Your Phone Number" field is now gone. Is this right?!

Anyway I have installed fMMS (vers 1.1.4) put in all correct settings in all of the fields that are now available:

Access Point Name: wap.vodafone.co.uk
MMSC: http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms
User Name: wap
Password: user
HTTP Proxy: 212.183.137.12
Port Number: 8799

It now doesn't work.

Can you help me, am I missing something?!

Cheers

Dan

edit: also the details and instructions on the MMS wiki are not for the latest version and I cannot find a comprehensive guide for version 1.1.4 anywhere for love no money. Is there anyway you could you please do this, downloading the application is great but setting it up properly and actually using it would be awesome! Thanks again

Hi frals
I found the temporary solution for sending MMS with right-to-left text and other phones CAN receive this messages :)
I need put only one letter in english language in the head of the text, and after this I can write in hebrew and other phone can receive this... :D

I find it highly unlikely as that would mean Nokia having responsibility of support/problems etc, I think having it in Maemo Extras is enough as everyone can download it from there (as extras repo is enabled by default on all devices from PR1.1(?)) :)

Regarding adding it to conversations its not something I'm going to do as it's too much work from what I've gathered, and not sure how attachments etc are handled there, if at all.

Regarding the autoconnect issues with the phone picking the MMS instead of normal one it's out of my control by the looks of it, one workaround is to use Havoc mode as this hides the MMS connection from the system.

When uninstalling and removing the old access point used by fMMS manually with fAPN there is a high risk that fMMS will still try to use that connection after reinstalling as this settings persists even after uninstall; to clear all fMMS related settings you should write the following command in X-Terminal:
gconftool-2 -R /apps/fmms
and then reinstall fMMS.

I'm sorry but keeping a huge wikipage like that up to date is not something I have time to do, I try to update the beginning of it when I have time but I have to ask and hope everyone who uses the application can update it when they see something wrong there (after all, that's why its a wiki page).

Thanks everyone for nice words, suggestions and for using fMMS (and the donation :))!

thanks for the response!

i have two questions:

1) after deinstalling fmms and getting rid of the connection point with fapn my problem was solved (well except that i couldnt send/receive mms anymore :) . are you saying that reinstalling fmms after entering that command line will enable me to receive7send mms without the whole fuss of the n900 constantly picking the mms-connection point?

2) i read every posting in the fmms thread, but i still havent exactly understood what exactly havoc mode does and doesnt do, could you kindly explain with an example?

2) http://blog.frals.se/2010/05/19/fmms...now-in-extras/, I'm not sure I can explain it any other way :) Short story: it opens the connection to the MMS APN in the background when its needed and closes it after sending/receiving. :)

thanks again, one last question/making the previous one more clear:

"Due to the nature of the kernel in Maemo 5 there are some ugly hacks involved in this, so if your current connection and the MMS APN configuration share the same network namespace, things might get ugly"

what exactly does ugly mean? :)
