There's a problem in your script: it's encoding is not UTF8, so endline characters are false interpreted by shell. And you got such suck. Open the script with text editor, delete every endline it has and save in Unicode. It solved the problem for me and some other guys.

This is possible. There's a watchdog watching for critical system processes. Since they're killed, that watchdog restarts them. If not - it reboots the machine. I guess it's better to add 1-second waits after each operation - this prevents accidental rebooting, while running of the optimizing script takes a bit longer (who cares?).:D

guys, forget about this. try Swappolube. Apply proposed values and magic will happen immediately. My uptime is currently more then 10 days.

Try this link.

I hope it works.

dos2unix utility converts files by replacing CR and LF characters to only LF.

CR : carriage return character.
LF: line feed character

Those characters are added at the end of every text lines and they are hidden (not displayed on the monitor)

firstknight 2010-11-11 04:26

Re: Optimize your Nokia N900

thanks.... it worked....

i think its still kinda little confusing... all i know that it just change character to LF... but no idea how this CR happens...

Hello again Optimize your Nokia N900

So much time away, I have been working on my new job in Sureal Studios, my dream came true:p sorry for the time away:)

I'm impress with all this, even a DEB:eek: soon maybe they will upload it to the extras devel or something:p

I'm very very extremely happy that I have contribuited with all of you:D

And even better, you all will be very pleased to know that in my time away, I had optimized even more the script, but it is experimental right know because I have to wait for 48hrs for the memory fragmentation to began to mess with the speed of the phone, and well.. Every 2 or 3 days is when I can test every script, so... It is a tedious work, but with some luck we will have our N900 running FOREVER!:D

I wrote a script the refresh several processes like if you are rebooting your N900 but it does not reboot it or causes sudden battery drain like what happens when you reboot the N900.;)

Just open the X-Terminal and run as ROOT:
sh OptimizeN900

I have been testing it and updating it for several weeks and this could be the final script:)

Please be aware that the screen will show weird stuff but it is normal because the ALL UIs and Hildon are restarting.

Here you can see a screenshot from my own N900 running perfectly well after almost 6 days:)

Please tell me if that help you, I hope it does. GOD Bless You ALL!:D

The script is meant to be running only when you feel that the system is getting slow. Normally it will happen after 2 or 3 days of continuos use.

Mine normally gets crippled after a few hours. Can the script be run too often? By that I mean would there be any adverse effects to the device if I run the script like twice a day or is this something we should limit to once in two days or at most once a day?

After a few hours you say?? :O that sounds like your device have some problem because normally we all can have one day or two with no issues, but only hours? that's not normal.

About the script, yes, you can use it as much as you need if your device become slow, that's normally if you have 250mb of swap or more. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011! :D God Bless You ALL! :D

Re: Optimize your Nokia N900

I am not sure if the Optimizer is running or not, I put the file in MyDocs and rename it to op900

I cd to MyDocs, ls make sure it is the right path (i see the file is there)
sudo gainroot
sh op900

the script run with lots of list showing no found #x....no process killallxxxx... line by line until the end say optimized complete....

is it normal? the process running complete in just a few seconds!!

EDIT:
Forget the above, I solved it:D I checked the previous thread and found that it is the windows/linux file format damage it, I follow the thread, open the file, using leafpad paste to a new file, save it and run, now it is working, some process cannot be killed cause it said I am not running it:rolleyes:

listed process not running is:-
osso_calculator:no process killed
cannot kill pid 13968:no such process
osso_notes:no process killed
mafw-gst-renderer: no process killed
optimized complete, some flashing screen to my phone and back to normal again ( yeah, the phone re-start those process being killed)

effect not yet know, cause I run the phone for 6 days and feel some lagging, so try out this script, see anymore lagging later;)

Does this happen only to contacts imported from facebook/skype, or you've got none of the avatars now?

.

Maybe you have to try to remove your skype & facebook accounts from your N900, then add it back again and see if it adds those contacts back.

Re: Optimize your Nokia N900

I tried running this script... it reboots my phone.. i thought it was because I oC'ed... but i tried running default clock and it still reboots. It's not consistent, for example, after i reboot, I try running the script and it seems fine, but after a while of usage, tried running the script and it reboots the phone after running the script for a short while

hi i recently downloaded the power button shortcut for optimize n900 but i dont like it and i want to remove it. please help me as im ending up switching my phone off everytime as the secure device button used to be there whch got messed up since i downloaded optimize power menu shortcut.

Re: Optimize your Nokia N900

Open terminal
sudo gainroot
apt-get remove optimizen900-pm

That's why I recomend to stick to the script on the first page. It will not mess with anything on your device because it does not install itseft.

I had a chance to work on the original script, furthermore now you can run the script from systemui using the power button.

In order to do so:

Unzip optimize.zip and place optimize.xml under /etc/systemui/
Remove the .txt extension and place optimize under /home/user/

followed by a

killall systemui

Systemui component (optimize.xml)
Code:

<powerkeymenu path="/">
 <menuitem priority="200" name="Optimize">
  <callback service="com.nokia.xterm" path="/com/nokia/xterm" interface="com.nokia.xterm" method="run_command" bus="session" autostart="true">
  <argument type="string">/bin/sh /home/user/optimize</argument>
  </callback>
 </menuitem>
</powerkeymenu>

Revised optimize (killall) script:
Code:

#!/bin/sh

echo Device is being optimized...

#Refresh the Audio Process to avoid audio glitch
killall -q pulseaudio
sleep 1;

#Refresh the Tracker process
killall -q trackerd
sleep 1;
killall -q tracker-indexer
sleep 1;

#Refresh the browser MicroB
killall -q browser browserd

#Refresh of the most common applications and UIs

#Refresh the all UI Hildon, menus and bars.

sleep 1;

killall -q systemui
sleep 1;

#NOTE: Killing the hildon-home process can erase all widgets and that is why it is disabled
#killall -q hildon-home
#sleep 1;

#Refresh other processes
killall -q tonegend
sleep 1;
killall -q mafw-gst-renderer
sleep 1;

Hope you guys find it useful.

You can also do it manually with xterm (you need to have tootsh installed):

Code:

sudo gainroot
rm /etc/systemui/OptimizeN900.xml
