Re: [announce] swappolube to lubricate your gui

hi!

this gui lubricating app boosts my GPS in getting a locked and accurate location.....awesome!

and one more thing, in downloading files let's say using transmission, i find having a hick-up when activating all the proposed settings in swappolube. so i need to deactivate it before starting any downloads specially gigantic files.

but that is not so good! the app rocks and i want that to persist! so my kneel down question is what settings i need to change, enable or disable in swappolube during a download?

thanks....:)

Swapo is supposed to be tuning the system at startup. Why change stuff on the run?

apologies......i was just wondering if the swappolube's settings makes some of my video streamings and torrent downloads to cause some issues (like longer buffer time and hashing/verifying of local data).

thanks, :)

EDIT: my fault, not to do with swappolube

Re: [announce] swappolube to lubricate your gui

Not by itself, no, but it does tweak settings that affect buffer sizees and the such, likely forcing a flush. As long as the OS flushes data, all writes are queued, resulting in a "hickup" for everyone with a disk IO in progress. Since torrent apps do that for a living, it seems likely. you can try a sync before but that just moved the stall.

Little way around it, I suppose.

I wonder if you could implement a function to save and load different presets... Would be nice to have.

i agree......i did lower my connection settings (like minimizing peers to 30 each torrent and 100 overall torrents) and worked fine.

it was my own settings on transmission that was making the crazy effects....thanks

Easy: So you can see what effects the changes have right then and there. Having to reboot between kernel tweaks is the winblows way...

Another way to say this is that Swappolube's default settings are not necessarily the correct settings for how you run your particular N900, so you may want to tweak further yourself. Seeing the effects immediately upon committing them to the kernel helps tremendously and is the whole point of being able to change kernel parameters on the fly, whether on a semi-embedded device like the N900 or a full-blown PC (where all of these settings also exist, but I personally have yet to play with them).

That brings up a good question, actually: how come there isn't a Swappolube for all the other Linux distros out there?

Just finished the interface!
Still need some code to provide the new functionality but I'm really happy with it and wanted to give you a little preview.

Hope you like it.

Re: [announce] swappolube to lubricate your gui

Uploaded an updated version (1.0-1) in extras-devel

This update includes the requested functionality, i.e. the storage of custom configurations, and a redesign of the GUI.

Changelog:
  • Added new option to store and display a custom configuration.
  • Several GUI improvements (buttons moved to the left, description includes default values, ...).
  • Clean-up of code; better naming of variables.
  • Changes in the postinstall script to include the custom settings file.
  • Bump version number - app is now feature complete.

As usual, will wait before promoting it also to the testing repo for a couple of days.
In any case, please let me know if you find something wrong/misbehaving or/and more ideas for additions you'd like to see.

nice! I'm going to check it out.

Re: [announce] swappolube to lubricate your gui

Would be great if you could add to the GUI the ability to change more values as explained here:

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=69973

You could, for example, provide a 'Default', 'Safe' and 'Fastest' goroup of values to select from.

ndi 2011-03-09 11:18

Re: [announce] swappolube to lubricate your gui

Default is safe, so there's default and recommended.

ivgalvez 2011-03-09 11:24

Re: [announce] swappolube to lubricate your gui

Well I meant 'Safe' as a safe improvement over default.

Anyway, there are some keys that could be added such as:

/proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes
/sys/block/mmcblk0/queue/nr_requests
/sys/block/mmcblk1/queue/nr_requests

Uploaded an updated version (1.1-2) in extras-devel

This update includes 3 new options for testing the interactivity improvements under high I/O load discussed in http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=69973

- The new options are not part of the "proposed" values
- The MMC1 settings will appear disabled if an external memory is not installed.

As usual, will wait before promoting it also to the testing repo for a couple of days.
In any case, please let me know if you find something wrong/misbehaving or/and more ideas for additions you'd like to see.

In the latest version you'll have these options and you can save the configuration discussed in the other thread as a custom one.

I don't plan to have a 'safe' config for the simple reason that I cannot really judge what is safe and what is not.

The new values in version 1.1-2

/proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes
/sys/block/mmcblk0/queue/nr_requests
/sys/block/mmcblk1/queue/nr_requests

seem not to be stored correctly. They're always set to default when I reboot my N900.

Thank you for this most usefull application.

When working with it, I was wondering if it would not be more appropriate to have this application "sitting" in the control panel, instead of its current location, in the appliation list?

Next version in devel will have a button additionally at the Power Key Menu.
If people like it will keep it.

Thanks for your instructions on how to do this. I saw you post in some thread but couldn't find it again to say thanks.

Instead of separate package I think will make it an option.
Shouldn't be hard..

What's the problem? Is there a conflict somewhere?

I had a similar issue when trying to update swappolube. I got a message saying that rtcom-acccounts-plugin-facebook was going to be removed. Anways I upgraded swappolube to the latest version & then reinstalled rtcom-accounts-plugin-facebook via the terminal.

This sounds similar to issue: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11831
If you have CSSU installed and you are affected by this issue then no matter what you try to install or update it will try to remove few used packages. It is irrelevant to the Swappolube package.

Re: [announce] swappolube to lubricate your gui

Thanks for this great program!

I just updated it yesterday, and I had no issues despite having Theme Customizer and CSSU installed.

I'm not too crazy about the button in the power button menu. I can't really see any point to have it there, because I think Swappolube isn't exactly something we all use daily. I don't have CSSU there yet, unlike that screenshot, and I hope it won't appear there as well. If the power menu button isn't made optional in a future update, I'll either tweak the menu myself or implement swappolube tweaks the hard way :/

I think the best practice would be to put programs meant to tweak system settings under settings, that seems like the most logical solution to me. I've been wondering why Swappolube is in apps menu and not in settings :D
