any problems with overclocking ?

Before anyone has problems booting up with multiboot, run:

Code:

apt-get install --reinstall kernel-power kernel-power-bootimg multiboot-kernel-power

It sounds like it's all hit or miss. Pretty much like overclocking... Some devices do fine and others not so much. I currently have v40 and when v42 came out I read of problems but nothing like .45 or .46. I have the update for .46 sitting in the download queue but I'm not ready to pull the trigger yet... Maybe this weekend :p

I have mine overclocked to 1GHz. No problems as of yet. I'll report back if something goes awry

I you have multiboot just install v46 and manually edit the .item file

Camera works fine for me... using fcam drivers in extras-devel.

ok what is supposed to be the difference betwen the 45 and 46??

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

Apparently, no more uboot in v46... I don't get it, but I'm searching the forums and I'm sure there's an explanation. And I'm hoping uboot will return.

Eh, looks like what I though, basically just too many people had trouble with it, so instead of telling them to sod off from devel, it's taken out for now. *Sigh* Oh well. The way the change log says it makes it sound like it'll come back whenever Titan feels it's ready.

peacekeper 2010-11-19 05:05

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

so according with what you say is not that big difference, but the no more uboot. well at least people will have a rest of dealing with that issue, for those who had it.

Mentalist Traceur 2010-11-19 05:12

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

I really think people only have trouble with uboot because of a lack of willingess to figure things out. I think I heard one guy who had an issue, because his SD card happened to have a partition uboot thought was bootable. Even that can be fixed with a boot.src, I'm pretty sure.

I mean, it's extras devel. It's called devel for a reason. You don't go there unless you're willing to have stuff not work. And you sure as hell can file bugs and make criticisms, but not complain about it when stuff breaks, because the whole point of devel being there is so that **** can be tested by developers or those willing to experiment and learn and break their device.

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

I think the whole conundrum with u-boot wasn't so much about just having u-boot thrown in but also usb hostmode among other things. Most people didn't want to miss out on the new features and gave u-boot a shot, not knowing what might happen.

As for me, I can see both arguments. Looks like titan has appeased both camps at this point in time. Those who prefer u-boot will stay on 45 and those who like multiboot will upgrade to 46 with all the fancy features added to the familiar boot process.

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

Just like there is a separate, installable and completely removable uboot-pr13 for the PR1.3 kernel, there likewise should be a separate, installable and completely removable uboot-kp for kernel power. Read here.

Okay, After v45 and v46 am missing something.. Am not able to OC.
It says This version is not supported at the terminal and Its disabled with CPUFreq..
How do i enable this? Is it because its locked?

Was using v45 since it came out with no probs...

Will be 'downgrading' !!

I.E. I had this installed already even before posting here.

Do i have to manually reinstall using apt-get or what could be problem exactly?

Read the changelog, why uboot is removed.
A lot of people have booting problems with it.

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

I am happy too, had the u-boot starting kernel problem for a week and was trying to reflash for 6 days, finally today I did, all my apps are still here, it was battery not enoug charged, and before I was writing a mistypo command on CMD window (Flasher) . My device is Rev 2204, should I uninstall my current Kernel Power? Or upgrade to v 46? I am afraid to brick my toy again. BTW my version was PR1.2 and v 10.2010 etc and now it is 20.2010 etc, but I did the comand flash kernel only on flasher, altough that I download the PR1.3 bin file latest release for usa. Any ideas and advices? I need overclock for psx4all emu . Thanks anybody.

Would it be good for the future releases to include? a remark refering to specific HW version(s) that have been tested on? just my 2 cents

edit: one plus I noticed with v46, you can access SD card and mass storage via PC even when its in use by n900 !!
with v45 you cannot, as I just downgraded and lost that functionality..

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

One of the most significant problems with U-boot was the inability to charge the device while the U-boot screen was loaded. People who had problems loading a kernel, and for various reasons there were quiet a few (me included), ended up with a flat battery. This meant that they could not flash and unless they found an external method for charging, pretty much had a bricked device.

While I completely agree that stuff in Devel is there to try by the intrepid folk who want to learn the capabilities of their device and “Don’t fraid anything”, I think that the overclocking capability of the kernel has attracted far too many mainstream users that would struggle to recover from difficult situations like the one described above. I’d say Titan considered this and other factors before deciding to remove U-boot. V45 is still there for those who want to use it and know where to get it, and for those who don’t, and those that blindly install updates from devel; they now have a kernel that won’t cause them so many problems if they need to flash. I think it was good idea.

Personally, I’m sticking with V45 for the time being as I want to dick around with its multi-boot trickery, and I like Tux (the penguin). But I’ll also have a spare charged battery on hand for when I go too far and have to flash back.

That may be a bug - very easy to corrupt a file system that way, that was why it is disabled normally - unless titan lists that as a feature, I'd stronlgy advise not trying to access memory from two seperate devices.

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

With v46 my sound completely disappeared. I even cannot make a phone call (i cannot hear the other person).
I just returned to the original kernel and it works again.

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

titan-kernel-power46 removes u-boot and adds one enhancement (forgot what it is at the moment). BlessN900 and built-in camera still works. Sound works fine, at least with all the calls I received today (updated my kernel to power46 this morning).

Loved u-boot but understand why it was removed.

My question to the group is if it's possible to install the u-boot application found in the repos with power46 running... anyone knows or tried?

x-lette 2010-11-19 09:31

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

uboot is directly attached to a kernel. Installing uboot from repos will install the stock kernel with uboot attached. Maybe titan or anyone else could split the kernel power package into two packages: one with uboot attached and one without. So everyone could decide by himself whether to use uboot or not.

I'm currently working on this solution. The main problem is finding a proper packaging scheme compatible with HAM.

look forward to this titan , i lukily had no problems with u-boot but appreciate your position with so many having problems , i likewise support the request for power kernel with or without u-boot allowig users to choose whih suits them.

Thanx 4 working on our requests and keeping us updated.

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

Where is the problem? Doesn't a different naming scheme suffice? Like kernel-power vs kernel-power-uboot. I guess all other related packages don't need to be changed, right? Like modules for kernel-power (kernel depends on modules not vice versa), k-p-settings (doesn't have to depend on kernel or could at least depend on one of them) or uboot related tools.

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

I had the issue of the battery going flat and then the device not powering on/sticking in a reboot loop and not charging.

I got around it by pressing the "u" button and then plugging the mains charger in,whlie the device was in the reboot loop. This then enabled the device to charge and I was back in with no issues.

Any one noticing a drop in fps in avi's? Mine seems a bit laggy, especially in pan and action shots? (Im on 46)

Re: Update for Enhanced kernel for power users just released

I think the tail is wagging the dog here...

Instead of pulling from the devel repo and reporting problems with new features with that version. We should instead be reporting and Voting on version 42 in testing.

That way this testing version either gets promoted or bugs get squashed and the subsequent versions in devel move up the queue...

Those wanting to report bugs with the devel versions should:

Quote:

...Be ready to file proper bug reports instead of posting complaints.
Expected problems: crashes, battery drain, poor system performance, full disk space & more...
Life as it should be. :)

For those interested in overclocking with PR1.3, version 42 in testing has worked fine for me with none of the other problems reported in this thread.

Camera works, mass storage works...

Sounds good, I was actually pleased to have uBoot included in Kernel-Power45, an easy way to get that working. One kernel including all the goodies :)
