This is probably my last post on this forum *sob*.

A lot of people have taken the message from your first post that Nokia basically said something like the following to you, "Maemo is dead. Don't develop applications for it." Quim Gil, of Nokia, is suggesting that's not what happened and your own posts aren't entirely clear on it.

Could you address this, as this meme is spreading destructively; and I want to be sure our understanding of the situation is correct. I suspect my earlier post on the topic got lost:

Last week we spoke with Nokia. We were actively discouraged from developing for Maemo any further.

The "actively discouraged" seems to have been misunderstood, so I'd appreciate a clarification. Can you describe in more detail the conversation? From this, it sounds like Nokia said "we suggest you do not provide any further releases for Maemo"; whereas from your other posts it sounds like Nokia told you sales volumes, that PR1.3 was the last release and that you did a perfectly fair & rational cost/benefit analysis and decided to draw it to a close.

However, I'd hoped that even in the latter case, Nokia would have said something like "PR1.3 is the last release of Maemo, however we're committed to Qt - sticking to our preferred technologies and developing on Maemo will give you a headstart for the Harmattan device and other future MeeGo devices".

Further clarification would be much appreciated.

Peter, the home page at instinctiv.com includes a download for a maemo app.Is this the same version as already exists in ovi store or does it contain any of the developments included in this thread?

Ultimately, we feel we've explained our situation in detail and to the fullest extent possible without revealing information that was shared with us in confidence. I've sent you an email with more details but they are in essence the same ones I've shared here.

I'm sorry Peter, but this is exactly the kind of action that will get your company a bad rep/word of mouth/whatever... You have a community that uses your app and is a fan of your work and you abandon it completely in favour of other platforms.

They are a company. And by definition, a company's first duty is profit. This sorry excuse for a lifecycle killed any chance of M5 ever making anything profitable save for microprojects.

There is absolutely nothing that can be held against Instinctiv.

Yes, they've "abandoned" a community of thousands (only a handful of whom will hold it against them) in favour of spending their time and money developing for a community of millions. These are not hobby developers, they're a commercial organisation who need to make financially-viable decisions, and this one is really a no-brainer.

Yeah I don't think anyone is arguing that they're a company that needs to make a profit. And no one is asking for a freebie either. But at least give us a chance to buy it. Or enable ads on it or whatever. Just don't leave early adopters out in the cold.

I personally love instinctive and think it's a far more usable approach to being able to listen to music on the n900. People like me already love this app. Users on windows don't even know about it and it will have to compete with about a million free alternatives out there, including windows media player and winamp.

Bottomline is, they're basically going to launch this app on every platform except the one that already knows and loves their stuff. I'm having some trouble wrapping my head around that.
