They never said Nov/Dec, some speculation has put it around then, but they've only ever said 2H of 2013*.
They set a deadline for around Dec, but they didn't say it will arrive for purchase then, there was always a possibility it could be sooner.

*I'm referring to their most recent revision of (rough) availability time-line ofc

Before anyone gets their imagination flying too high, according to the finnish article it's software modifications not hardware modifications. Like for example, a cool looking background saying "Hacker is the shizznit!".

The company will use the pre-order funding to manufacture the devices.
They'll be using a Finnish Kickstarter-like funding platform that was not specified.
What's with their obsession with all things Finnish/Nordic, they need to curb that a bit.
"Kickstarter-like" site, FFS just use the most popular social funding network(s) on the net.
Not some esoteric Finnish-based one just because it's Finnish... >.>

Yup...

Finally, Jolla promises all pre-orders something special: "We want to offer people pre-ordering something unique, eg. user interface related."

My nokia blog seems to have an interesting take on this.

Article here

not sure how much is true!

I'd say this whole preorder funding is rather unusual since the big chunk of that money won't go to Jolla but would be swallowed by the taxes. That's what happens with Kickstarter campaigns if anyone isn't familiar - people lose almost half of the funds to the government.

Where do taxes come into the picture? I though money goes directly to the company

Don't they have that huge chunk of financial backing (something like 600mill IIRC)?
Or was that only to be released in very small chunks, once(if) certain millstones are met, over several years etc?

Company selling products has to pay taxes. Preorders are taxed as well (if not even worse), since they are advance sales. With Kickstarter it's more weird, since most people see it as a funding (investment) mechanism, however for the government it's still advance sales mechanism, and they tax it like crazy. That's the reality - projects lose a huge part of such funding money. That's why most attempt to find investors, rather than using crowdfunding, since in such case taxation doesn't apply in the same crazy manner.

I'm not very clued-up in that area, but assuming you're absolutely right...
I hope this crowd-sourced funding tack is being leveraged mainly for marketing purposes, & is not a indicator that they're having troubles with funding/investors.
