Speed comparison vs EEE PC
 

Hi everybody, I'm a new member here. I am looking for a small Internet device, and the only real choices for around $500 are the N810 and EEE PC. Having read a ton of stuff about both units haven't made my decision easier, and I really have no way to check them out in person, as no retail store around me seems to have one.

I am currently leaning a bit towards the N810 just because of the size, but I would like to know how fast the unit is? Is it very snappy moving from screen to screen, starting programs, etc., especially compared to the EEE? And how is the browser speed vs. the EEE? I've read contradicting statements from people. As a comparison, I have Moto Q as my phone, and I really can't stand how slow it is with everything.

In my opinion, the Eee Pc and the N810 cannot be compared. Just ask yourself first what you want. If you need a laptop experience in a small package, go for the Eee Pc. If you want a ultra small gadget with web browsing capability and extras (pim , media player, etc) go for the N810. Again my personal experience tell me that the N810 (or the N800) could never replace a laptop. The Eee could do that (with its own limitations, of course). I am a former owner of a Kohjinsha SA1F0, which has a similar form factor than the Eee, so I can tell about with foundation. Hope this helps! :)

The N810 is very slow in processing and opening web sites, as compared to an eee.

I understand what you are saying, but for me at least, I am looking for a secondary internet device. I have a laptop and a desktop, and just need something that I can throw into my suitcase or a pocket, to use it on the go when a full laptop is not needed. So both N810 an EEE are a viable choice, with tradeoffs on either side. So it really comes down to the internet experience. If EEE had a higher resolution screen or better battery life, it would probably be an easier decision. As it stands, it's a tough choice for me :)

Sounds like the 800/810 would be a good complement. Computers are good if you have them. I placed my N810 in my pocket this morning, I've used it to jot notes, listen to music, use the GPS, work on text files and spreadsheets, read email. And it's only early Sunday afternoon. I wouldn't have done half of it if I had to go to a laptop or whatever that was already set up.
And if you are throwing it in a pocket- How big a pocket do you have that fit's a EEE?

The eee will not fit in your pocket, I played with one and its like a childs toy, wasnt very impressed (but thats my opinion). If its internet only go the n810, or even better the n800 is very cheap now ans basically does the same thing minus a hard keyboard but the n800 has more external memory options

Well, I wasn't planning on putting EEE in my pocket, that's where the briefcase comes in :)

I really want a keyboard, that's why N800 is not an option for me. And the GPS, even if not the best out there, is a nice extra.

I watched a few videos both N810 and EEE, and there is a definite difference in speed, but N810 doesn't seem too bad. Certainly faster than trying to use my Moto Q for web browsing :)

Anyway, I think I'll just get the N810, and use it myself... I can always exchange it...

I've used both. I prefer the EEE PC by far. It's a fully fledge Linux sub-notebook and a pretty quick one at that. It runs Firefox 2 happily and is much more suited to web browsing, mail or document handling.

I also recommend EEE for web browsing.It is extremely fast down loading pages. It actually equals any notebook or desktop for speed.
I did buy the N810 as a convergence device but found GPS was very poor.
I almost kept N810 but found browsing to be somewhat quirky at times.
I returned and bought EEE as an alternative.
It was a wise decision.
It is not a toy. It really works well for its intended use.

The Eee suffers dramatically as an Internet-accessing device due to the lack of Bluetooth, meaning you're dependent on wifi or a USB Bluetooth dongle and faffing around with scripts.

However the Eee does have more grunt, and is probably around 30% faster at loading pages than the N810 (totally a gut feeling) and its lower DPI screen and more memory help here as well.

However, even the Eee doesn't give a proper laptop or desktop web experience.
