touchscreen problem

I’ve had my 770 three months. Last week, about 60% of the touchscreen stopped working. Mostly the area from the upper left hand corner to the middle of the screen. If I use my fingers and press hard it will sometimes respond but will not work at all with the stylus. I did feel over the past month or so that the screen was not responding as fast or as accurately as it should. In fact, from day one it seemed a bit sluggish (not the software the screen response and sensitivity) but now , it has almost stopped responding completely in a large area of the screen – unless as I say I use my finger and press very hard. Is this what I fear it is? A bad touch screen that can only be fixed by sending the unit away? Hate to do this as I’ve become very dependent on it!

You could reflash, that would make absolutely certian that it is not a software problem.
If that doesn't help, then it's a hardware problem, so you would have to send it back to Nokia.

i have exactly the same problem and try to activate Nokia Support

I have the same type of behavior:

- left center part of the touch screen is insensitive expect with my big fingers.

- i have notice a few days before my upgrade to OS2006 and the upgrade changes nothing.

- since then the situation become worst and close to be unusuable, but i like 770 too much to separate from it ...

- since a few days, i try the Nokia support without a big succes.
i still don't known how to send it back to Nokia.

- first on the Nokia site, i was redirect to a local support shop (arwac belgium).
- they have accepted it , but a few days latter, they reply that i need to contact the Nokia Helpline.

- i have already contact the Nokia Helpline 3 times. A Technical? guy need to contact me back.
- on my second call, there was no trace of my initial call.

- i have recall Helpline , today, and now it is better, my issue at least exists in the Nokia system. But i still waiting to receive a call to start a procedure.

- it seems that nobody at Nokia ( Belgium) , known what to do for the support of 770??

if you have some experience with Nokia Support, please tell us ?

Regards

Marc

Same problem here. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I'm fairly certain that it's a hardware problem in my case at least. Is this something that could be repaired? If so, how much would it co$t?

I had exactly the same problem (touch screen sensitivity fading away), and at the moment I am still waiting for my 770 to come back. I gave it up and went to Nokia Service on July, 16th...
I still am in love with my770, though, because one of my friends lend me his one :)

That seems like a very long time to wait for a repair! I handed mine in today to a Nokia Repair centre Dublin. They told me they would send it off to Nokia and that I should call them again in 2 weeks time....here’s hoping! It would be good to have some phone number or e-mail address for this mysterious Nokia workshop where one might find out the basics – did u get the unit, did u start work on it, when can I have it back? It seems that Nokia use the country specific repair centres as a gateway that one can’t get past!

are you two under warranty? Because I don't think I am (bought it off ebay), so I'm curious how much it costs.

tonylee 2006-09-19 17:11

yes, I''m still under warranty. Bought if off the Nokia site last June. don't know how much it would cost to fix it out of warranty. I wonder would it be worth your while looking at companies who do general touchscreen repairs? Lots of companies do ipaq etc screen reapirs (http://www.ipaqrepair.co.uk/ipaqpart476.html) then again, it probably is better to get it to Nokia since it its probably some internal hardware thingy that has failed or is failing. Interesting that , like mine, a few others have talked about the left side of the screen failing. I don't know enough about touchscreen technology to specualate what this might mean.

Well, I went to the nokia repair site and punched in my serial number and apparently I am under warranty for 10 more days and I don't need to provide the original receipt (good, because I don't have it!). I guess I'll send it in and see what happens.
Actually for me it's more around the center of the screen. So, it's actually still barely usable, I just use the hardware buttons for dialogs that appear in the center of the screen. Of course, the fullscreen keyboard is completely unusable at this point.

(I don't work for Nokia, and besides, nobody knows your real names);

Has the 770 been dropped?
Screen protector?
Exposed to very hot or very cold conditions?
Handled roughly(ie pressing too hard)?
Twisted?

Sounds to me like the layers of the screen might be separated a little bit and this is causing it to be less sensitive/not working entirely. Wondering what the common thread is so's I don't hoop mine (stuck in Canada without a warranty because of that fact (I think)).
