File syncing
 

I'm pretty dependent on Dropbox for work (between my Windows laptop, OS Xdesktop, and the web for access in the lab). I know dropbox isn't available for the tablets (I have an n810), but is there an alternative for syncing files automatically?

What I'd like is something that will sync files between, say, a folder on my desktop and a folder on the tablet. The best would be if it syncs whenever the tablet joins my home network, but I'd be happy with an application I can load up on either the desktop or the tablet when I need to.

Is there something out there already? I've tried things like rsync, but nothing I've found seems easy enough. I don't mind an initial setup, but I'd like it to be as simple as possible to use when I need it.

You could try grsync, which is a graphical interface to rsync.

Thanks. I did try grsync, but only local folders are available to choose from. If I could mount my desktop over wifi as a disk on the tablet then I think grsync would work. I do have an FTP server running on my desktop. Is there a way to sync over FTP? Or mount an FTP server on the tablet?

If I need to use terminal then I could always just use a panel applet that has the option to call commands. I don't remember what it was but I had one at one point on the tablet.

like ubuntuone ? ulteo provides a similar service, but i suggest you to encrypt data 1st (ouch for your nit) ..

I have searched those, thanks. I haven't looked into UbuntuOne, however. Again, the big thing seems to be mounting another drive over WiFi, which I guess isn't feasible right now.

I have a ssh server running on my (ubuntu) desktop, which rsync/grsync will connect to. (This isn't the same as mounting, by the way). I'm not sure what you would need to do to get this working on a Windows desktop though.

I think I will try to get Unison working when I get my N900. Unison is similar to rsync, but bidirectional. I use it to synchronize my home desktop, work desktop, and laptop (the synchronization works via a filer server which runs SSH). It is quite fast, right now the directory I synchronize is about 4GB and it takes about ~30s to scan for changes.

Some people like to use version control (e.g. svn, git) for backup and presumably you could use it for sync as well. Might take some effort, and if a centralised version control like svn is used it would necessitate a server, as well as writing scripts for clients.

I wasn't aware grsync had an option to connect to an SSH server. I only see local directories and bluetooth as options IN grsync.
