Ok so I am tired of hearing how much those the 770 suck and how many people hate this and that...

So here I am.... I guess I am one of those lucky one who had nothing but sweetnes out of my 770.... I had hack the hell out of it and still standing strong..

Okay the problem was that I didn't understand how to install the packages in the application manager. There is a thread on this website that shows how to successfully install GAIM. Once you do that, start adding all the repositories you like to the thing, and you will be able to successfully add anything you want.

By the way, for the longest time, I wished that I had PIM software on my 770, (no, I mean usable PIM stuff). Yesterday, after I installed Minimo, I loaded calendar.google.com, and I now have my calendar on google.

Minimo will run Google Calendar - get it installed on your 770!

Today, I updated Google Calendar at work with my appointments, then simply loaded it up at home on the 770. Life is good. I recommend using 770's built-in Inbox/contacts, since they are so well integrated, instead of the GPE-PIM/DejaPim thing.

So I now have a usable, multi-location calendar, that is non-Microsoft, and I already had Inbox, Notes, Contacts and Journal (Xournal, or similar). The only thing I did not have is Tasks (Todos), but I already had GPE's Todos, or really, you could just as easily use Notes for those. I have GAIM, with the MSN protocol, which is what I was using anyway, so I can do that fine.

I now have Gnumeric going as well - it didn't work before, because my application repositories were messed up. Do the steps in that GAIM tutorial, and you can probably get Gnumeric going too.

Don't get me wrong - 8 months ago, I went back to my Palm Zire, for work, because it was just so perfectly integrated, but now that I have my 'Office-style' apps going on the 770, I am back on that.

I know that the 770 is not supposed to be a PIM, but honestly, Nokia seriously screwed up by not at least letting you 'fall back' to PIM use. I am sure that a lot of Palm Treos were bought in leiu of the 770. I even considered buying a Treo. I know, people think PDA's are passe' anymore, but in an office environment, that is not true. Everybody at my office uses a Palm Treo or older Palm (hundreds of folks).

What were you thinking, Nokia? You are like Apple, thinking people don't need/want an easy software development environment. VB is cr@p, but it is better than nothing.

The only thing that I really hate is that I got a Motorola Stereo Bluetooth Headset for my anniversary, and it works great with my iBook, my work computer, everything, except for the 770.

Give Wizig a try is preatty c00l is what I am using right now.

I love my 770. One WSOD, but that didn't matter too much. I feel bad though, because like all the other electronic devices in my life its fallen to the wayside.

Mostly it's used for pod casts, tv shows on trips, an ebook reader, and an emergency ssh tool when my console locks up while running java (log in, kill java, and log back out).

I've had one WSOD that was resolved fairly quickly, other than that I keep finding more and more apps to expand the 770's usefulness!

For my purposes, its worked so far.

The worst part of installation was figuring out how to add a menu item that runs a batch file manually... that and the small amount of hacking to get xmaeme running has been it so far. Installation in general has been a much smoother experience versus my previous PDA type device (the Zaurus, which is a nice machine but I found required too much hacking around to get what you want).

This device was bought to act sort of like a USB drive, that I could use to view or edit documents (such as my todo list, which is a simple text file). The Internet capabilities are a bonus... Opera works great from what I can tell, and the wifi picks up more signals than the Z did. Game selection is also nice and okay enough, lxdoom and xmaeme's Nintendo emulator is very playable for instance.

It'd be nice to get a bigger application library and resolve the OS stability, but for now this thing seems to work.

I almost feel guilty that mine runs great when I see some of the posts here. :/ Amazing, especially considering it was a very early version.

Other then the recent bad luck I've had with 2 separate units having WSOD, my 3rd unit is running like a charm. I love this thing. My main use is Maemo Mapper, controlling my Linux based HTPC, Roku SoundBridge M500, general internet surfing and RSS, and videos via mplayer. It is by far my favorite and most used gadget.

Hey at least I know how I broke mine. (wsod) Too many reboots while trying to flash (and it was all user error, I own up to that). If I hadn't done it myself, I probably would feel guilty too
