N900 Wifi issue
 

I seem to have a following issue with the N900 wifi interface:

Wifi works ok for some time, then if it looses the connection and regains the radio connectivity it doesn't (always) get an IP again.

Once the interface goes to this mode only reboot seems to help. It finds wifi networks ok, just doesn't get an IP from DHCP. Disconnecting and reconnecting or connecting to 3G and then connecting to wifi doesn't work. Btw, 3G works ok all the time.

Any idea how to further debug this or how to kick the interface so that I wouldn't need to reboot whenever this happens?

you can enter a static ip-address on the n900, bypassing the dhcp server on the router. You also need gateway ipaddress (router ip) and up to 2 DNS ip-addresses (those can be found with "ipconfig /all" in cmd on windows, on a computer connected to your router.)

Just make sure you dont pick a ip address thats already in use by a computer connected to the router.

btw, the error you experience, may be caused by the router it self. My router disconnects me from time to time to on my desktop computer. My router is a really cheap discount router.

Hey, thanks for the answer.

I should have pointed out that the issue is not caused by a router as it is repeatable at the office and at home with two certainly different routers.

Setting static IP address is not realyl what I'm after 'coz that would totally screw roaming again. Well... I guess I just need to keep looking and experiencing. Just thought to ask if this is some common issue but apparently it isn't.

Hey,
I bought my phone today with vodafone, the phone is gr8 am loving it so far except for a couple of things, one is the unexpected restarts and the other is the wifi issue as pirtti said, on wifi the browsing is ok for about 2 minutes... and then it goes blank... and i suffer the same wifi issues... plz help... :s

Check your firmware. In my case, I had similar problems. I was playing around with the N900 until it crashed. I bricked it! I went to the Nokia Support site, downloaded the latest firmware, the flasher and did a reflash. It is now working wifi and all. :)

I am having some problems with the wifi connection too. So I follow the Ipconfig method to have a static ip address (Ipconfig/all doesn't show anything, but Ipconfig show one connection). I also have read that i have to add 10 to the last digit in the ip adress, is it correct? So, if i have X.X.X.12 i in the computer, i have to write in other device X.X.X.22. The other parameters doesn't change.

I have a similar problem with other devices (nintendo dsi) so i think i'm making some errors in the configuration nor the firmware.

Anton, I don't know where did you get that kind of information. I suppose that could work though. The safe way is to get your IP address automatically. If it works, do not change anything.

If it does not work, you could try and change your IP address statically. Then you should know the netmask of the network. Usually it's 255.255.255.0. Therefore if your computer has an ip address of 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x, you should only change the last number (in most cases) to something that is a bit larger than the one your computer is having but less than 255. The "other parameters" should be the same. Just keep in mind that your IP address has to be unique. No other should have the same address in your network.

To learn more information about IP addressing and subnetting, you should read some tutorial. E.g. http://www.ralphb.net/ipsubnet/intro.html should give you some information.

I already have use the internet connection with my carrier service and i doesn't have any problem (it get the ip address automatically). Until now I have only use the wifi connection with my laptop, but when i try to use another device i have problems. I'm changing the last number of the IP address, but still it doesn't connect. I'm keeping all the other numbers the same.

Well there can be a lot of different issues that might give you the problem. If the IP address is not of type 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x, then the problem might be that your ISP does not give more IP addresses. The solution would be to change your network configuration from bridging to routing and use NAT. This is done from the WiFi router. Or just use the connection when no other device is connected to the network.

Or if you already have NAT on, check that it's SUA only and the DHCP pool (the amount of IP addresses the router can "give") is larger than 1.
