MeeGo supports both x86 and ARM.

The next Maemo MeeGo device from Nokia uses an OMAP3 (ARM) processor.

Indeed, its likely to be a dual-core version of what the N900 has.

No Intel CPU is as battery efficient as the ARM is, and with that in mind the N900 for many of us still has pretty dreadful battery life. :( Waiting on my AA battery to Nokia adapter. :)

I am just throwing something into the discussion as I would like you guys to tell me what you think of it :

Ars Linux Editor Ryan Paul noticed at Nokia's Maemo Summit last year that Nokia was oddly resistant when it came to talking about the chip that's slated to power the successor to the N900. Ryan pushed and the only thing that Nokia would say is that it is continuing to develop on the OMAP3, the same chip that is currently in the N900. With next-generation ARM parts based on the Cortex A8 and A9, it made zero sense that Nokia would stick with OMAP3 for an N900 follow-on, leaving Ryan with the strong impression that Nokia was exploring other SoC options that it wasn't ready to talk about.

I wonder if the apps will come packaged with both binaries included or you'll have to hunt and peck for the correct binary like in the early(?) WinMo days...

This is why we have a package manager.

I predict MeeGo will end up on ARM phones and x86 netbooks/tablets, completely transparent to the user. In 5 years, maybe x86 will have the advantage on both - you never know.

@livefreeordie: I'm not that familiar with how much closer recent RPM features to APT. I hope the final implementation on MeeGo is sane.

So long as there's equal amount of marketshare between ARM MeeGo and x86 MeeGo, then we have nothing to worry about.

Once this scale tips one way or the other, then brace for impact.

You could be right, but all Nokia needs to do is require that all Ovi apps be compiled for both. It's a non-issue for any competent developer. I don't see why they wouldn't do it. Open source developers will support both by principle.

Citation needed.

I'm not aware of dual core omap3?

He probably meant OMAP4.
