A serious push towards porting iPhone and Android apps to Qt
 

I tried this on the MeeGo forum but there were no responses which is a bit worrying. Hopefully someone can give me an answer or start applying some pressure on the people who can make this happen.

Is there a program in place to actively lobby developers of the best iPhone and Android apps to port their apps to Qt? I have been able to find some information on how to port from iPhone and Android to Qt but simply putting the info online is not enough.

Some apps like Shazam are already on their way but what else is in the pipeline?

We could start coming up with is a list of apps that we love on these other platforms that we would like to have ported to Qt. As we are well aware, Qt apps benefit the entire GNU/Linux ecosystem and not just a single Linux distro which makes its adoption critically important.

Good call,

I wish I could help and I wish the more capable people in this community would invest more time and effort in helping porting popular applications to QT instead of porting the whole Android OS to N900 (!?).

Bring in Video CHAT like they did with iPhone 4 then this phone will be sick.

Err.... The N900 can already do video chat with Skype and Gtalk.....

I'm sorry, video chat? Are you being mocking of the general masses that buy in to Apple's bull about how they've introduced video chatting, or do you seriously not know that the N900 already does that, but better? (Though if someone did port FaceTime - good luck, Apple's probably keeping that guarded, then you could actually video chat with any iPhone owners you know. So long as they're on WiFi, of course...)

The above is a list of apps that I use regularly on the iPhone and I'm aware that some have web and/or existing counterparts (Adobe Ideas is easily replaceable by Xournal, for instance) on Maemo, but I would love to see OpenFeint for making all games into a social app, Unity3D for 3D game and object creation, and ultimately Adobe AIR for runtime deployment(s).

Xournal, Skype, RTComm integration that's already in Maemo (to be at the same level as now at least in MeeGo), Almost TI-85, Yellow Notes, and a host of others I hope they also make it to MeeGo too.

Duno if its even possible or not.. tho i hv always dreamed of an software like wine that would actually lay out a platform for iphone apps. (I'm not a iphone fan and dunt care abt it tho).
I wuld really wanna see steve job's face then. how he would react to that now as we have seen the famous "dont hold it like that " thingy.

I think he's right. If we want developer attention, we need market share. And one of the major features of the iphone 4 is their facetime. I know we already have skype etc, but think about it this way, maemo and meego would only gain from this.

Think of a situation of a potential buyer. This person who is undecisive between n900 (or the next meego phone) and the iphone 4. Having facetime would be one less advantage (in their eyes) because it would be already compatibe with other iphone 4's. Thus they wouldn't have to be worried about "uggghhh, eff it, i'll just get a iphone 4 so i can do facetime with my friends"

I know it seems like this might be a win for apple because we are "supporting" iphone 4's proprietary system, but, there's much more leverage for someone to purchase a meego phone because it supports facetimes with other iphone users compared to vice versa, hope that makes sense

Skype has about 30 million active users (an estimate based on simultaneously logged in users; they like to brag about the 200 mil+ accounts people have but many of those accounts are never used). Iphone 4 has sold 3 mil in a month and will easily quadruple that amount; still in the year to come the number of ip4 owners will likely fall below Skype user numbers. All of the former will also have access to a cheap or free Skype application, should they choose to use it.

Now, if video chat was such a great feature (many believe it is not, and I have personally had a hard time making a case for it here on TMO), people would flock to Skype. Its connectivity options immensely surpass FaceTime at present and in the nearest future -- they are putting Skype everywhere but the kitchen sink now.

Having said that, I think that Skype will sooner or later succumb to an open standard. Could that standard be FaceTime? The real question here is, is FT an open standard? Jobs said "we are submitting it to the open standard bodies tomorrow", but it seems tomorrow never comes. Apple fanbois all believe it is already open, and point you to Jobs's presentation, but noone has seen the specs, noone can access an API or a source. More informed people argue that the earliest it would be open is end of 2011.

If FT really opens up, then it would be trivial for developers to write the application you want. It would also be highly profitable for Skype and the like to develop one-way connectivity for calling out to FT devices. That way they can keep their proprietary protocol and attract more users.

Let's wait and see. I am very curious what will happen.

I'm not going to knock the Facetime suggestion. If it is truely an "Open" standard as Apple suggests, someone should implement it in Qt then people won't need to buy iPhones or Macs to use it. Nokia would be reluctant to use anything Apple has come up with due to their ongoing patent case though so it would have to be a 3rd party.

Here's my list of photography apps for iPhone. I love Classic Print on the N900 but these apps have better features and have also nailed the UI.
