Is Windows 8 really that bad?

Found this very curious & funny picture (source) :) :

What do you think? Is it really so bad? So far I could try out Microsoft's Surface (RT) which is quiet refreshing compared to for example the iPad with an appealing hardware design. But Win8 on a desktop computer (despite touchscreen or motion detection) is quiet a mess and doesn't know what it wants to be or what user it aims. Sales & stats confirm that so far...

Anyways, the thread is rather about the picture - didn't find an existing Windows8 thread.

They messed up the user interface. They should have perfectly seperate the two UI's or put Metro into desktop and not the other way around. Now thet frustrate all desktop windows users (billions) to provide a nice touch interface for a few tablet users.

On top of that they added another layer of multitasking to the already cluttered windows experience, and they force the user to open metro and go through hoops to open an app on the desktop, where they already are.

I think that after 2003 all the UI decisions of Microsoft are plain wrong. Changing things that are proven to work for the sake of change.

Windows 8 is not bad at all. If you love it just use it. Ignore what others thinks. They are not you so... If you go for it don't be a fanboy about it like lots of people here.

It depends. I guess if I needed windows I would propably use XP, but that's a big if there :D
It's a good thing people are not forced to make that choice...

Quick reply...
[Amused by the coincidence]I do happen to use Windows XP.
And I didn't install Windows Vista even though it was offered practically free of charge. And Windows 7 and Windows 8 are lumped into the group of too-layered-to-possibly-be-secure operating systems.
Microsoft is known for backwards compatibility of Windows; on 32bit Windows XP, I run 16bit software made in 1994 and not updated ever since.
I am not complaining about backwards compatibility, it's comfortable, but I am complaining about bloated software, because it puts one layer of user interface over another, and requires more and more hardware resources.
I am hoping I will be able to move to ReactOS, or another operating system, before Windows XP becomes too unsafe to use.
Best wishes.

Yup, Windows 7 is even easier to use and simpler. The Metro UI.. Meh. But the good thing about it is that now you can play mobile apps such as Jetpack joyride, Fruit Ninja..etc. But it is so bad that the start button went away which Windows was actually famous for. Windows 8 was not a very interesting version. But it matches Windows Phone perfectly..

Is there anything happening on ReactOS lately?
I looked into it few years back an an alternative to XP but at that point it was pretty raw bones yet...

The best review of windows 8 that I have ever read. From jun 2012

http://www.zdnet.com/how-to-skip-win...-7-7000001734/

I own a copy of windows 8 and used it for some time before my laptop mobo died. Yes, Metro forces you to retrain your brain to do routine tasks and it was probably mostly a bad idea. But there's no denying that under the hood, windows 8 is better than 7 and xp. Better boot, less resources required, and more functionality.

Upgrading or sticking to your OS is up to you. If you don't want to upgrade, don't upgrade. :) it's contrite and condescending, but it's the truth.

One day your current system will die, forcing an upgrade and you will grumble along as you relearn the new UI, but you will get used to it. And you will probably use that same windows 8 machine to complain about how much windows 2020 sucks. Or your kids will.

place the start button on left top side and tell me what it remi nd you? maemo! yes.
by the way why have two ui systems on one os? most of the people spent time in desktop, so why tiles?

It is moving but slowly. Not abandoned, but still an alpha testing version.

I will probably 'upgrade' to Debian, Fedora, Gentoo or Minix. I certainly will not use any version of Windows higher than XP. And I will probably use the same laptop ten years later, even if I have to perform 'surgery' on it to replace failing parts.
Best wishes.
