sailfish-maps rpm from a Jolla 1?

First post and I'm already asking for something?

Hey all,

I just jumped on the sailifishx bandwagon. Sadly, I realized a bit too late that maps isn't part of the sailfishx. I know there are third party solutions or just using the android app, but that's not really my deal.

Anyway, I'm currently trying to get my hands on a Jolla 1, so I don't have to keep making posts like this every time there is an update, but would someone be willing to cut a newbie some slack and post here or just pm/email/etc me these rpms pulled for a fully updated Jolla 1?

pkqt5-plugin-geoservices-here

Re: sailfish-maps rpm from a Jolla 1?

You don't need to copy the packages from a Jolla sbj1 device; it is enough that you have a Jolla account that you have activated with an official Jolla supported device (sbj1, model-c, aquafish, tablet, ...)

After that you can pull the maps to your whatever-Sailfish-device straight off the repositories.

Re: sailfish-maps rpm from a Jolla 1?

Is that application currently in development or no more? Just curious...
So not possible at all to use it on ported devices?

Re: sailfish-maps rpm from a Jolla 1?

Perhaps I'm doing it wrong but:

pkcon install sailfish-maps
Resolving [ ] (0%) Package not found: sailfish-maps
Command failed: This tool could not find any available package: No packages were found

And While its not really in active development, the last fix I saw was 2.1.3 and it seemed rather minor :

sailfish-maps

Updated : 1.1.27-10.41.1.jolla -- 1.1.28-10.43.1.jolla

[sailfish-maps] Avoid unnecessary notification category file.
sailfish-maps-l10n

Updated : 1.69-10.35.1.jolla -- 1.73.1-10.39.1.jolla
[l10n] Branched sailfish-maps from version 1.73
[l10n] Commit from Jolla localisation: 89 of 89 strings translated (0 need review).

[tpl] translation templates update for 1.1.28

It seems like its still the best option around. WhoGo looks promising and all, but it's just not ready yet!

You're quite right, but honestly I'm just not that keen on using an android app for such a primary task.

Re: sailfish-maps rpm from a Jolla 1?

To be honest, at the beginning I also used maps form Jolla, there were some third party apps but none of the were polished.
Maps wasn't really good, but the best at that time.

But nowadays, i don't miss it in any way. There are really brilliant third party apps which are much better than maps ever was:
Poor Maps
OSM Scout
and modrana are my favourites.
Together with OSM Scout Server there are not much wishes left for me. Why not just give it a try.

I would have added WhoGo Maps https://openrepos.net/content/otsaloma/whogo-maps to the list. In my eyes, head and shoulders above anything else on SFOS these days. Since your hardware is compatible, there is no reason for not going for the best.

I note that sailfish-maps is no longer in the Jolla store (checked on Sailfish X)

Re: sailfish-maps rpm from a Jolla 1?

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Honestly, I've tried OSM Scout and WhoGo.

I'm not in the business of knocking awesome developers building cool stuff for a small platform in their free time, but neither are quite what I'm looking for. Both are awesome project to be sure, but yeah.

I was just hoping to give the original maps app a shot. It seems well fleshed out and built for Sailfish 2:

https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/a...205675478-Maps

I know digging out your old Jolla 1 and getting it updated to 2.1.4 can be a pain, but it really is a total of 4 rpms once you're there. I would love the help.

Thanks again all

It is only available for the original Jolla 1, something to do with licensing with HERE. No newer device gets support. It looks like until last year you could download with pkcon:

https://sailfishmods.de/2016/08/joll...hinstallieren/

but that seems to no longer be the case

as one of the developers working on maps software (OSM Scout Server, offline provider for use with the map clients), I am curious. What did you find missing in them? Has it been covered in github issues of the projects already or is it something different? Constructive critique is welcome, it helps to evolve.

Jolla's Maps application has a really nice way of saving favourite locations (with a picture). Other than that, I can't actually think of anything Jolla Maps does that Poor/WhoGo Maps and modRana don't do a thousand times better.

For a "grandfathered" Jolla account upon Jolla 1 Maps first appears in 1.1.9.30 (Eineheminlampi) incidentally after reset.

Wait are you telling me that its the not the device but the date of the account?!

I very much do miss the following "stupid" feature : if I simply tap somewhere in the map, I can see point-to-point distance from my location. Nothing fancy, and usually I do it when I want to get a feeling how far is that from me instead of a super-accurate timing for a walk / drive. And as a human being, I am quite often driven by feelings :-D

I know that (at least) poor maps does allow me to mark a point with a "long tap", which is followed by a pop-up with some routing options ... maybe if the popup would also display the p2p distance? And of course, a short-tap option (optional?) for this would be even better...

Just elucidating that in my scenario from reset, Jolla account used appertains to that created upon release of Jolla 1 the first one. In any case if you upgrade to 2.1.4.14 (Lapuanjoki) Maps application will be removed from device and you would then have to re-download sailfish-maps-1.1.28-10.43.1.jolla.armv7hl.rpm with it's dependency qt5-plugin-geoservices-here-5.2.1+git27-1.3.2.armv7hl using pkcon in terminal.

Incidentally you didn't search very hard in the first place albeit for earlier version, although usage is still a breach of licensing agreement.

- Night mode
- Better search capabilities. At least in the US, it does not find addresses reliably. Tried all options: OpenCage, OSM Scout, Photon.

(FYI, using on Onyx in case it matters)

Looks like it should be easy to implement in modRana - there is even a "point info" page you can show after long pressing any point on the map where the distance from current position could be shown. :)

I've created a tracking issue - if you have a GitHub account, you can subscribe to it to be notified once the feature is implemented. :)

Here you go.
But seriously, who uses Sailfish Maps anyway? Use Pure Maps instead. Much better in every aspect.

Sailfish Maps admittedly has one nice feature where you can add a picture to your saved locations. Perhaps that's the killer feature that would make everyone switch to Pure Maps.

Honestly though, I think Jolla should dump Sailfish Maps entirely and distribute Pure Maps as the 'official' Sailfish map application, bypassing all Harbour restrictions. They wouldn't have to spend any more money, time and other resources on developing their by now long lacklustre maps application any further. I don't think the license would be problematic either because Maps isn't technically part of Sailfish as it isn't included in the default bundle, you have to install it manually.

@nthn,

+1

They could even support rinigus financially and still save money.

I've had the same thoughts for months, and I'm sure we are not alone. :)

While I admit that would be a nice addition to Pure Maps, sailfish-maps is obligatory for the "Show on map"-button for addresses in Contacts to work. Find a way for that button to open addresses in Pure Maps and I'll stop pulling the latest version of sailfish-maps from my Jolla 1 after every update...
