2016/2017 coding competition notice
Hi,
if you visit talk.maemo.org unregistered, you'll still see the notice about the 2016/2017 coding competition at the very top of each page: Quote:
I believe the easiest solution would be to simply hold another coding competition for 2018/2019. That way, only the two numbers in the current notice would have to be replaced. ;) |
Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
The notice is still there, even if you are registred just simply didn't bother to click the notice away. Seems like throughout the years my brain learned to ignore that part of the page comletely. :)

Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
Yeah, one sucker (me) did not bother read properly that notice on December 2017, so i transferred small amount of funds for competition which was had ended more than half a year ago. Thanks for the closing tip. Gone for now for me.

Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
Personally I do not mind that outdated notice (as I clicked it away long time ago). But I do get reminded of it from time to time when opening TMO unregistered.
I believe it is just lack of time (and/or experience/rights of people still active). It is true, it should be either removed. Or changed to 2018/19 :) But what I really find annoying is that the power search does not work anymore (Google API v1 deprecate, changed to v2). Anyone experienced in web/html should get the change done pretty fast, or? |

Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
I remember using it a lot some years back, so it must have worked at that time unless I'm getting a bit flaky :D
|
Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
Oh yes it worked like a charm (until end of last year?).
@pichlo are you talking about the 'normal' search on top of page? Or the power search on the right side. Of course one may open google and type keywords together with (talk.)maemo.org. But as said a bit annoying. And sad! |

I have not worked with the new custom search, but a (really) quick glance at the documentation revealed that there could be some advantages to register as a non-profit at google if there's interest in doing so. PM me and I'll investigate further so we can continue via Mail. cheers! |

Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
I've just had another look at the new Custom Search:
A simple Integration is really trivial with access to the page html, in fact, I have set up one with my account as a test, including some maemo-esque colours. But as I am not a member or representative of Maemo e.V., I don't think that's useful (there seem to be a few search statistics like "top search phrases" to which I would have access). For a registered non-profit, a free version without ads is available, that might be a nice thing to have. https://www.google.com/nonprofits/ EDIT: The old search-ID seems to still work. So the working code would be as follows: Code:
<script> |
Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
Can we not switch to another search provider? One whose business objective isn't to collect as much data as possible on every individual on the planet?
|
Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
I agree, it is rather pointless to use external provider for searches since the data is in our own servers.
|
Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
Perhaps switch to this one? ;)
|
Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
Wait, why do we have 3 search boxes?
What is wrong with this one - http://talk.maemo.org/search.php , which is a mere 3 items down in the same menu... |

The only eliable procedure is to use tbe 'google' search (as sad as it is). |

I support/propose to try that. |

One problem with external search engines like DuckDuckGo or Google is that they index words listed under the "Active Topics" which is displayed on every page. These words may be completely irrelevant to the indexed thread, so you end up with a lot of false positives in the search results. Quote:
This would be my proposal: Code:
<iframe src="https://duckduckgo.com/search.html?duck=yes&site=talk.maemo.org&prefill=Search TMO with DuckDuckGo&focus=yes" style="overflow:hidden;margin:0;padding:0;width:483px;height:60px;" frameborder="0"></iframe> https://duckduckgo.com/search_box |

The 2016/17 coding comp. is over?? Already?? I was expecting it to take another few years to finish yet... This info and the resultant change is rocking the foundations of my reality... |
Re: 2016/2017 coding competition notice
The question is, will there be a new competition. If so, I have a TOHKBD to donate.
