Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Hello world, :)
First, sorry if I'm in the wrong place, and sorry if this is an already known and easely fixable issue. I red a lot about the n9 and meago on this (awsome) site and here and there on the internet, and i decided to buy one. I'm new to the meamo world (I've never touched android either, in fact I'm new to the smartphone world), so forgive me if I ask silly questions, although I usually try not to open topic before being completely hopeless... So I carefully red the "Resurrect your N9" topic (https://wiki.maemo.org/Resurrect_your_N9) and so the first thing I tried to do was to change the repo. I turned the Allow installations from Non-Store sources option on then opened the browser: And well I couldn't browse to openrepos.net as well as nearly every website I tried to browse to. (I could access meamo.org and A small videogame blog merlfrit.net and that's all). It seems to load a few things before prompting an error message "Couldn't open page [url]". I looked for a solutions on this forum but nothing helped me... I new I might not be able to access every websites, but here it's serioulsly getting on my nerves :( I guess I can install the N9 repomirror package transfering it from my PC but still.... I'd expect the browser to access most sites since it's compatible HTML5. I guess the probleme isn't about that though. I really love this device so I'm ready to put a lot of effort and time into it ;) Thank you if you took the time ti read this, I'm looking forwoard to your help! |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Have you tried setting the date to 2013.. 2012 ? (I think that's what fixed me up)
Could there be a network problem? Have you tried using a different wifi source? |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
thanks for taking the time to answer me.
Yes, I red it was wise to set the date between 2012 and 2015 so I did so right away when I booted the.phone for the first time. Perhaps it is but, why would sites like this one work while others dont? Moreover my other devices (I have an x61 under debian 9, a windows PC) can access any site without problem and I could try with an android 5 smartphone and a nokia 610 under obsolete windows phone version and it worked perfectly as well... I'm completely lost  Maybe proxy or dns things I dont know :o I'll keep invetigating though I live in deep countryside so I can't acces any other wifi source right now, but I'll try! EDIT: I tried using 3G and it's.exactly the same. EDIT2: I found a commun point between all sites I can't access: There are https... I just can't access secure sites. This is something I probably could fix changing the browser's settings (like the TLS things)... As microB is based on mozilla, I tried the about:config thing but nothing was prompted... Developper mod won't intall so I can't use term and change .js files values manualy. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Try setting the date to the correct one for browsing https sites. (TLS 1.2 sites still won't work, but openrepos will.)
Then set the clock a few years back only when you install things because some of the certificates have expired, and they won't install if the date on the phone is past the valid date of the certificate. When everything's installed set the correct date for browsing https sites. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Hi,
Still doesn't work... But thank you for your help! :) I'm thinking about flashing the device and get everything fresh... Although I'd prefere not to do so cause I got the device brand new with 1 year garanty and I find it sad to waste it :D Any suggestion that would help me accessing the browser settings? |

Ah ok greate then let's go for it! :)
I'll edit this poste when it'll be done to tell if it's fixed or not ;) Thank you very much for your help! EDIT: I performed a Comprehansive reset with PR 1.3 and.. It's all fixed! :) I can access openrepos.net now. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
For sure flashing wont fix the problem. I'm facing the same problem on two of my n900s and n9 as well. The problem is somewhere else, probably not in browser itself 'cause microb, opera and qmlbrowser on maemo 5 reports the same problem:
Code:
cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s).Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap |

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Hi,
Thanks for all these answers! There are still few sites I can't open, like twitch, but I guess it's all about TLS 1.2 like DA5 said. So Harmattan is not completely obselete yet! At least for me... |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
What would be the required steps for fixing the TLS1.2 issue?
|
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Before switching from N9 to Sailfish X, I was having the same problems you describe. I was able to resolve this for some of the main sites I visited.
I figured the problem may be that since Nokia isn't providing updates to the N9, perhaps it's not getting updated root certificates and that is causing a problem. So did a search one day for intermediate certificates on a PC, downloaded them to the PC. I then hooked my N9 up to the PC and copied over the files. Next, on the N9 I went to Settings>Security>Certificates. Then in the hamburger menu at the bottom right, I selected "Add new certificate". Once I imported the correct intermediate certificate, I tried the website. Like I said, for some it resolved the issue. I can successfully open openrepos.net on my N9. I tried seeing what SSL intermediate would be used to solve openrepos.net and I can't figure it out now. :( I know I imported four of the Comodo ones, I think a handful of GeoTrust ones, and GoDaddy's Root CA. I am sorry this isn't more specific as it has been quite a while since I did this. But I hope perhaps it sparks an idea to get you up and running. If you want more help, perhaps tell me a site that isn't working for you. I'll see if it's not working on my N9, then see if I can get it to work and keep track of exactly what I download from which site so you can replicate the successful procedure. EDIT: Ah, I reread the thread and see Twitch listed as a non-working site. That does not open on my N9, either. I am trying with that site now. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Well, I could not get Twitch to work. In Opera the error is: "Handshake failed because the server does not want to accept the enabled SSL/TLS protocol versions."
So the current SSL Intermediates doesn't resolve this one. Sorry. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Update: I have made some progress. In Opera Mini, I went to about:config > Security prefs and then enabled, TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 and disabled SSL 3. I saved, restarted and now Twitch loads and successfully redirects to m.twitch.tv for the mobile version. :)

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
OH!!!! I got this to work and failed to post the steps I took to download the intermediates and install them.
On my PC, I opened Firefox and went to Twitch.tv. I clicked on the green lock icon to the left of the URL which opens a new window showing that Twitch is a secure connection. There is a ">" on the right of that info and I clicked on that. The window's contents change and it shows that Twitch's SSL certificate is verified by GlobalSign nv-sa. I then clicked on "More Information" at the bottom of the window to see the gory details. In the new window that pops up, I went to the Details tab. In the Certificate Hierarchy I see that GlobalSign Root CA - R3 is used, then GlobalSign Cloud SSL CA is used. I closed out of all those windows and in a new tab opened a web search. I then searched "GlobalSign nv-sa download root and intermediate certificates". There's a result of support.globalsign.com that I clicked on and got a list of their root and intermediates. I installed their root and three CloudSSL certificates. To download the certificates, right-click on the box "Download (Binary/DER Encoded)", and select Save Link As. I just saved all of them to my desktop. Next I hooked up the N9, copied the files over to my Downloads folder. I disconnected the N9 from the PC and then performed the certificate installations. It took maybe ten seconds before the N9 searched the directory structure and came up with all downloaded certificates. I just one-by-one selected each of the GlobalSign ones, the selected "install". It brings you to another screen where it asks what you want the certificate to be used for. I leave all fields enabled. I'm sure that could be refined somewhat, but I didn't care. I don't know whether this certificate step was even instrumental in resolving this issue, or whether it was just the Security Prefs being modified in Opera that ultimately resolved the problem. In the off chance that this certificate stuff is necessary, perhaps this detailed response will help others with other sites. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
For some this might help.
Problem is that N9 browser does not support TLS1.2 to which more and more web sites are changing. Another problem is that this way only adds certs bit we would also need to revoke some old/discontinued or even worse hacked certs! |

I think it's an equation with multiple variables that need to be addressed for different sites. But the good news is that it is possible to work around some of these issues for the time being - if one is intent on using an N9 in 2018. And good point about getting rid of expired or worse, hacked SSLs. I had not even thought about doing that. Thanks. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
That's what my question was aiming for. So I take it that Opera Mini seems to include tsl1.2 support. The meego-browser does not, neither does wget or the openssl library in the supplied version.
I'm annoyed about this problem because not only do various sites not load in the webbrowser, but also other apps have problems. E.g. I cannot subscribe some podcasts in gpodder due to this (took me some time to figure out that tls is the problem, since error messages everywhere are very non-specific). So in principle it should be possible to crosscompile libopenssl in a sufficiently recent version, similar for wget; for the meego-browser I don't know. But I have no idea of how cumbersome this actually would be. Can somebody give me any hints? Getting the certificate store in order is needed in addition, of course. |

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
What makes you think a N9 (definitely a beutiful device!) is suitable as a daily driver nowadays?
This https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=10071 is the latest thread of a new to-be-resurrected N9xx. I guess you need a read and come back then in a more appropriate (or new) thread. The N9 is deprecated hardware and much worse also SW. So lots of fiddling necessary to get it into a more-or-less usable state. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
I would love to discuss this with you, but all I am is asking if there is a way to get this thing flashed to the latest OS so I can at least web browse and download some apps.
Thanks! |

There are hundreds of posts explaining how to flash. What is the info you are missing? Have a look at the device (N9/N950( overview https://talk.maemo.org/forumdisplay.php?f=51 and you will see in the titles... for flashing itself https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.ph...flashing+guide and for searching natching firmware files just use google or the search box BUT be aware that you must not mix chinese firmware with other firmware, so make sure you know your device's version. |

Okay, thanks guys. I'm really a novice, but owned this device in 2012 and came across a sealed new one on eBay and bought it. Okay, so I'm bored and need a new (geeky) hobby with the kids out of the house. So, thought I would try to indulge in some nostalgia. Here is a screenshot of what it came factory loaded with:

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Dumn question though - why does my N900 talk to the internet and open all web pages and web-based apps (albeit different OS) and the newer N9 does not?

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Hi guys,
The problem I'm having now is finding a Windows 10 or latest Mac OS-based flashing tool. None of them are working for me. Can you recommend a recent flashing tool version? Thanks! |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Got it done! I'm now loaded with:

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Once i wanted to flash one of my n9 with 009 version to 001 and i got an error "downgrade not possible" or so, Is there any diffrence between these two versions?
|
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
009 versions seem to be Northern Europe as here:https://pastebin.com/zhJSn6K1
However DFL.61_Harmattan_40.2012.21.3.480.04.1PR_LEGACY_48 0_ARM_RM-696_PRD.signed.bin (Product code 059L5D4: N9 RM-696 Country Variant Switzerland CH Black 64GB V1) can be a last resort when every other software variant regarded as downgrade. |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Yes 480 Switzerland is the highest firmware. No way to return to a another.
But it is definitely good for Europeans and should be okay for other, too? |
Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Thanks for pointing that out! 009 starts with British language as default, but i don't think there are any noticeable differnces, system-wide.

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
A little update:
Wikipedia now blocks TLS1.1 from their website. On the N9 you are greeted with this site: https://en.wikipedia.org/sec-warning Of the Browsers I have available only Opera Mini still works to access it. To bad, I loved reading wiki on the OLED screen. |

Re: Nokia N9 browser can't access openrepos.net (and many others wabsites)
Thats what I thought too.
They have the following valid argument: With HTTP bad regimes can intercept traffic and block articles of specific events or topics. Think china blocking the Tian’anmen massacre or a strongly religious state banning sites on the theory of evolution. They can enforce this by blocking traffic to the https version of the site. Still without a feasible way to filter traffic like this with TLS 1.1 (Its not yet that broken) I do not understand this latest step. Seems like I have to set up a Squid Proxy over Christmas. |

Are you talking about Mobile or Mini Opera? I couldn't get it working through this java emulator, it seems its the most up to date browser for MeeGo rn.
