Application manager cannot find firmware update
1 Attachment(s)
Hello, I have bought a Nokia N900 with firmware version 3.2010.02-8.203.1 and want to install the latest official Nokia firmware without flashing the device, like recommended before installing the latest stable CSSU (http://wiki.maemo.org/CSSU).
I installed maemo.muarf.org mirror repositories (http://wiki.maemo.org/Repository#Mir...ion_manager.29) but when I use the application manager to search for updates, I cannot see any firmware update, is it normal? When I use the command "apt-get update", I can see that the GPG keys of maemo.muarf.org are expired, maybe this issue is related? When I try "apt-get dist-upgrade", it asks to remove a lot of packages like Adobe Flash Player (see attachment). Is it normal that all these packages will be removed? Is it safe to upgrade the firmware with "apt-get dist-upgrade" instead of using the application manager? Thanks. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
do NOT apt-get dist-upgrade
|
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
@endsormeans Thanks for your reply, so "apt-get dist-upgrade" will always break the device? Do you have an idea why application manager is not showing a firmware update?

Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
I (and just about everyone else will agree) suggest strongly that you do in fact reflash a purchased n900 (or n810 or n800 for that matter)
That way you know as a certainty that you are dealing with a clean device and anything that occurs from that point on can be narrowed down to either: A- hardware failure of some kind, B- your own screw up... This way you know for a fact you are not dealing with some past users screwing about ... Why use someone else's configs? their fcuk-ups? goodness knows what issues the device may have... Best to scrub her clean and reflash... for example....(and conveniences sake...) follow "the Perfect n900 Set Up" http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_The_Perfect_Setup as far as n900 repos go...the perfect set up is a bit outdated there... there are other threads more current. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
Ok, I think I will flash, it is less convenient but safer for used phones if you don't trust the seller.
Do you recommend download links for the PR 1.3.1? Nokia Maemo servers are dead and it is not listed here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_UK_variant_firmware If my phone is a UK version, do I need a UK firmware or I can install any firmware? |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
Everything you need is at the Wayback Machine
|
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
The Wayback Machine asks for the product ID but it is a static archive so we cannot download from here: https://web.archive.org/web/20131102...nokia_N900.php
|
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
NIT stuffs were simply wholesale saved ...pages and all...
to the wayback ...once Nokia kindly gave us the keys...before getting turned fully to the dark side by Elop http://skeiron.org/tablets-dev/ |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
Nononono...
wrong place man... And yes you can download from the saved static page on wayback. You just went to the wrong place. Anyway... Don't hesitate to use the "search" tool to your left... various combinations of a query will get you results based on the preceding. for myself I am more of a "global release" kinda guy... but there are variants of all hues for you there. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
I found related threads:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Tabletsdev https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=90052 https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=96584 PR 1.3.1 cannot be downloaded from https://www.fladnag.net/downloads/telephone/n900/ and https://web.archive.org/web/20131117...ev/nokia_N900/ so I think I will download PR 1.3 and install CSSU after that. Do you know what the difference is between the global and UK firmware version? Can a global firmware version be installed on a UK device? |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
you shouldn't have a prob with the global.
there wasn't a great deal of difference between 1.3 and 1.3.1 .. Not worth the effort to hunt down 1.3.1 |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
Yes. Always used global.
PR1.3.1 can be flashed directly, it was on Nokia servers for some time until they closed. But as you decided to go CSSU way -definitely recommended- then it does not matter if PR1.3 or PR1.3.1 is on the device as those small changes (just some certs) are included in CSSU. And, good decision to flash. There are always some left-over from earlier owners/tinkering/... Oh, and please flash also eMMC (together with combined/vanilla). To have a really clean device. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
By the way, is the Nokia Maemo flasher open source or source available?

Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
With PR 1.3 flashed, I don't get the update notification for PR 1.3.1 with the maemo.muarf.org mirrors, is it normal?
Anyway I think I will use CSSU but I am just curious if the original Nokia SSU can display OTA updates with the mirrors. Maybe this issue could be mentioned on the wiki: http://wiki.maemo.org/Seamless_Software_Update |

Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
@justmemory I saw this post too while searching but RapidShare closed in 2015. Now I would be interested to know if it is normal that official OTA updates are not working with the mirrors.
There may also be a workaround to install firmware updates without flashing while offline with the deb package and dpkg command. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
PR 1.3.1 added only a few updated certificates to PR 1.3. AFAIK no official flashable firmware image was made available.
Yet I somehow also have 2014 RX-51_2009SE_21.2011.38-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin (200174197 bytes and sha256sum of: 775fde934550e72dbe88404db390ad351fb409b1b9c1d22ecd eccf1fcaf5db07) If you really need it (normally from PR1.3 you'd upgrade to CSSU, which includes PR1.3.1 and more), you can download it from here. I'll probably delete the link later this evening. https://www.bbmk.org/cloud/RX-51_200...ED_MR0_ARM.bin |

I would recommend reflashing too as endsormeans said earlier... |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
Thanks for your replies but I already flashed yesterday so I don't want to flash again. I know I can directly upgrade to CSSU from PR 1.3 but I just would like to know if it is normal that I cannot see the OTA updates in the application manager when using the mirrors.

Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
hmm...
all the fuss... really it isn't worth it. 1.3.1 isn't a magical unicorn. As has already been succinctly said... smartest thing to do is reflash - vanilla - emmc - 1.3 - CSSU (Which contains what 1.3.1 and much more ...as has been said...) Forget about the OTA ideas you have (for now...) It is a great that folks come to the NIT line with a fresh pair of eyes... Seeing things that could be done or ideas of how to get something working or some new innovation previously not thought of or a brand new idea(s) ... I strongly suggest keeping those ideas in sight ...write them down ...the why and how the idea came to the person... And revisit them the very moment the new person has their sea-legs under them and has spent a great amount of time just coping with the basics first...(in this case I can't quite call you new Baptx...since you are an n9-er....but still...the NITs are day and night from other devices) THEN ...revisit all the possible and potential ideas once more secure in the understanding of the NITs...and start your pet project from there. It is just simply easier for the new person. update: If you have already reflashed and scrubbed the vanilla and emmc in the doing as was suggested.... then the next step is to install CSSU. You will not have an up-to-date NIT until that happens (or as up to date as it gets ...that is...) and will not be on par with what everyone else is using ... you will be out of sync ...out of step ...with what updates to software there should be available for you. In fact.... Once you have reflashed properly and set up the repos right... You SHOULD see a pretty significant notification icon on the reg. screen ...which should include CSSU upgrading and installation... (if memory serves) If you don't ...something isn't right. One of the most frequently and consistently updated progs for the NIT (at this time) is Kot's OSCP media player. Installing that from the repos should show a an update... If you have done everything to bring your device up to speed. The ONLY reason to have an outdated n900 install ...is for the purpose pf research , study and such... or if you have a real serious NIT-on for an older os (here I am referring to the n8x0's and the various firmwares available such as Bora, Mistral, Gregale, Scirocco, Herring, Chinook, and even normal Diablo) It isn't the best idea for daily use ...nor for someone new to the NITs |

Plus everything OTA 1.3.1 brought (compared to PR 1.3) also comes with CSSU (AFAIR). |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
correct......
In fact....may I say... ... considering CSSU is required to be up to date with all current users, devels, software available, etc... and considering that there is no difference whether or not 1.3 or 1.3.1 is installed...since upon installation of CSSU both variants are brought up to the EXACT same point afterwards. There is zero point to the topic of taking the time and effort to hunt down and install 1.3.1 The entire topic distracts from the simple necessity of proper installation to optimum state. 1.3.1 isn't mythical unicorn firmware.... that is the province of the n8x0 firmwares...(:D) ok... enough straight in-your-face tech talk out of me... I'll get a brain tumour if I keep on this way. you guys know its not healthy to keep up pointed neuron-firing for extended periods ...right? We aren't designed that way... gotta balance it out with a bit of random firing to really get the best out of it.. or you end up like this poor guy... https://media.giphy.com/media/4e2qeTijFb5kY/giphy.gif gonna have a beer, put on some classical, tune into the end of the stock market and watch the comparison of stock fluctuations to live international news, play some Vagrant Story ...and eat a pail of Rocky Road at the same time... "Piece" endsormeans out. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
"Piece", endso?
To all those who may not know what rocky road is (I didn't, until about 5 years after I moved to Ingerland), it is a sickeningly sweet and greasy candy made from cocoa, sugar, butter, biscuits and marshmallows. Variations allow raisins, nuts etc. Eating a pail of it is a guaranteed upset stomach and a high risk of heart attack from clogged arteries. All that just made me crave some. Damn you, endsormeans! |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
@endsormeans at the beginning I was using PR 1.1.1 and wanted to upgrade to PR 1.3 ;) Now I was just curious to know why I cannot see an update. It is always interesting to know why something is not working even if there are workarounds.
My phone was not new so it made sense to flash the device but upgrading to PR 1.3 without flashing would be useful for someone who managed to buy a new N900 or someone who did not use his N900 for several years and does not want to mess restoring his device configuration and data. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
yeah pichlo...
"piece" since "peace" is never going to be achieved ....and rather everyone grabbing a "piece" ....seems to be the given... "piece" ..it is. Rocky Road ice cream https://barefeetinthekitchen.com/wp-...-9-500x427.jpg is only surpassed by "Moose Tracks" ice cream ... http://snackgator.com/wp-content/upl...NT-flavors.png which in turn is dwarfed by the delicacy of "Turtles" ice cream.... https://icecreamblogblog.files.wordp...ck_6.jpg?w=940 (I know it sounds horrible by the name ..people...but the ice creams have no animals in them at all...it is just crazy names for highly addictive meth-like ice creams...once tasted ....one must gorge on...it is impossible to stop.) aha! well Bap ...no wonder you couldn't see any updates! 1.1.1! it would be like installing windows 98 and expecting to see updates available... |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
@endsormeans I thought the SSU mirror (http://maemo.muarf.org/apt-mirror/mi...antle/ssu/mr0/) would show firmware updates notifications :D
So my guess is that another process was used by Nokia to check firmware updates, with hardcoded server names. If that is the case, the CSSU should remove this process (if not already done) to avoid unnecessary updates check to dead Nokia servers. |
Re: Application manager cannot find firmware update
You are absolutely right!
Just wait a sec. I am getting a hold of Maemo Support right now...they should be informed and deal with this ... ...won't be a moment... [elevator music in the background playing Barry Manilow's "I write the Song" ] more waiting...on hold...of course... more waiting... now starting to hum along to Barry Manilow... Oh jeez... [head-smack] I completely forgot... you ...me...and everyone else here.... IS the Maemo Support Team... (of course I do not believe it fair that everyone knows how to do everything...there are perhaps a few folks who really get the CSSU ...and I mean ...REALLY get it...to be able to fiddle with it enough to alter CSSU significantly...of course you knew all this stuff anyway...) I would suggest a far more invasive, dangerous, radical and time consuming ordeal.... Of going to Catalogs then checking off and hence disabling Nokia Servers ... :D |
