If you are willing to leave android apps, there is this phone https://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=100554 :D

Re: Ordered a Xperia 10 - Mistake?
Thanks for the talks.
Android is not very important to me, but really a nice to have (only apps im using are Firefox and Conversations). Xperia 10Plus is a Nogo -> too big, already strugging with the nonPlus decision. And the FX device looks nice but -> not available yet, price is nowhere I'm willing to pay. |
Re: Ordered a Xperia 10 - Mistake?
If Android support can be passed, you could check out ported devices. But as you ordered already, decision is made, isn't it?
|
Re: Ordered a Xperia 10 - Mistake?
Alternatively, try finding an XA2? It's a bit smaller, but same SoC, yet larger capacity battery. 1GiB less RAM though.
|
Re: Ordered a Xperia 10 - Mistake?
ram is the same 3 gb. and xa2 is wider

Mistake?
Oh yeah.... Huuuuuggggge mistake... Actually... I know zero about the 10... Haven't had one in my hands or researched it... Nor if its a good idea to get one or not... :D Personally I am waiting for the pinetab pinephone and pinewatch... And though they may be underpowered compared to the latest and greatest...they should be solid devices. And strategically a sound alternative to Linux devices at an affordable price point, with decent support as well. |

So it's not only about the Android emulation layer getting unusable old, but also about the (related issue) of outdated drivers. |

Jollas decision not to waste too much manpower into legacy hardware is quite reasonable for me. New and current users can only buy the latest device from Sony, supply of old hardware is only second hand or refurbished and not a good base to attract new users who demand the latest and greatest (middle-class) phone. I also find it positiv that Jolla chooses middle-class hardware instead of a premium device. SailfishOS is not a CPU and memory hog like Android and runs fluent even on cheaper CPU / less RAM. Let's hope that Jolla will spend the additional manpower freed from baseport 8 for Xperia X into getting the new Xperia 10 supported completely and OS bugs ironed out which will be good for all devices. |

Also, to kinda add an insult to the injury, unlike being locked in place due to proprietary blobs on the N900, we have actually all the latest kernels and drivers available for the Xperia X due to the Sony open device program. It's just lack of resources on Jollas side preventing them from maintaining the two split release streams. Well, definitely a bummer & we can only hope we will not loose too many community members due to this... Quote:
But this only works if the supported second hand hardware is reasonably supported by Sailfish OS - people finding out only afterwards that their second hand Sailfish OS phone is not really that much supported & the might need to spend more money for a new one might yet again not paint the best image. Oh well, hopefully one day mobile device can finally work like modern laptops - with generic distro images & mainline kernels and all this per device and per device baseport version support nonsense is a thing of the past. :P |

2 Attachment(s)
I have the Xperia 10 Plus since some days ago and I definitely fell in love with this phone.
Sailfish looks absolutely gorgeous on this device! |

You can do it under warranty if you still have it. Other wise it's not extremely hard to look at iFixit and do it yourself. (Would make a nice backup device to fall-back to Android, for the few apps that don't work on your Aliendalvik + microG. E.g.: direct bluetooth access). |
Re: Ordered a Xperia 10 - Mistake?
I've had a 10 (not plus) for a day or so, and I prefer the screen from the X (more saturated colors). The fingerprint reader is fun but I can't see myself using for long (my model X did not have one). And I have my doubts the Android update will solve my networking/data switching issues (Signal already seems problematic, and I need this app). And the network switching problem was my biggest wish for improvement. But the price was low enough I can live with. I like the 64GB internal storage. Hate the USB C. Can't yet find a minimal bumper case for it. The 16:9 screen is a bit awkward. Nothing amazing, nothing awful.
How does one use the two back cameras anyway (in Sailfish)? |
Re: Ordered a Xperia 10 - Mistake?
My 10 is here and working happily. Not too major issues with it and I'm happy, since XA2 Plus was built like a brick. :)

- The lifecycle on the market for a smartphone has shrunk to 9 to 12 months for the last two years. The Xperia 10 was introduced by Sony in early spring 2019. - A typical sign of devices being EOLed is that Amazon themselves stops selling them (i.e. only "Amazon marketplace" sellers remain): This is already the case for the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus. - It already becomes hard to obtain the Xperia 10 Plus at the Amazon marketplace at all (new and for a reasonable price). - The "final" price at Amazon (marketplace) for its predecessor (the XA2 series) was ~€200,- for the regular model and ~€300,- for the "Plus" model, before it stopped being widely available (in late summer 2019). This is where the Xperia 10 (<=€200) and 10 Plus (<=€300) are right now. - I expect the recent release of SailfishX for the Xperia 10 to slightly speed up selling the last devices in stock (in Europe). Hence you might be better off ordering one now. P.S. What frightens me a bit is the announcement of a "great announcement" in early 2020 WRT future devices and the future of SailfishOS. The last announced announcement (originally in the monthly Maemo-IRC community meeting) was about the "future" of Linux (kernel) and AlienDalvik on the Xperia X, and the final revelation last week was quite a disappointment after weeks of keeping users anxiously waiting for it. And this was just an announcement, not a "great" one. |

"I wouldn't bet on this:
- The lifecycle on the market for a smartphone has shrunk to 9 to 12 months for the last two years. " I concur I have been thinking on this fact the last few years The fact that with device lifecycles becoming so tight inevitably one of two things must finally occur 1- a radical and far reaching innovation that "normalizes" device lifecycles must occur or 2- sales, marketing, companies, enduser device ownership of devices, the entire ecosystem reachs a point of "unsustainable peak futility", popping like a bubble. and due to the entire realm of smartphone devices and the deliberately planned obsolescence for profit, along with the lack of risk taking in the industry easily observed as advancements are by micron , not by inch or foot or mile as an industry standard.. I believe the entire industry, and how humanity interacts socially is in for a colossal disruption... woo hoo circling the drain baby! |
Re: Ordered a Xperia 10 - Mistake?
There is a worry, i.e. the lifecycle of mobile phones as mentioned already. If we include the time Jolla needs to finalise the porting, then the lifecycle is getting a lot shorter.
Spending 250-300 every year for a mobile + licence is getting expensive. An official port for Fairphone3 would make more sense, but I guess we like big and flashy devices. |

A while ago I got a second hand Xperia X for a family member and the price was about 30% of what I paid for a new Xperia X just a few months before. The only real issue is making sure the device is in good working order and has a bootloader that can be unlocked. You will completely blast away any remaining data on it during flashing anyway. |
