More and more of the original Maemo Fremantle frameworks are in place now, so many applications from Fremantle work quite well already in Maemo Leste.

light and useful, not too tough to add in auto-gps grab to this, I think it is QPE so old QT but is nice and lightweight.
I used Petittrack with a ham radio walkie-talkie a portable cross-band yaggi antenna and a Sharp Zaurus linux PDA running this for years to play with ham radio satellites when backpacking in the mountains.

but it is not optimized for a small display, I currently have a whole very old Debian install to rarely run this app.
Gpredict though is not as easy to use mobile.
Petittrack has easy doppler off-frequency tuning for LEO sat passes, and has sun/moon as easy aiming references for back when we didn't have a ubiquitous hall-sensor(compass) in our devices; yea, N900 too.
Petittrack was no bloat perfect for it's target device limitations(no GPS, no Hall) easy clear fast-pass satellite tracking and manual doppler tuning calculation for ultra-mobile LEO communications satellite users.

Things I would need to Leste be my daily driver and to jump on it when phone, sms, wifi and 3G data works:

Application manager.

Hotspot. Easy way to share data connection with a computer.

Alarmclock.

Mail with imap support.

Firewall.

ukeyboard for extra characters the easy way. Or is there a working virtual keyboard with extra characters already?

Calendar.

Browser. Dooble could be worth of trying to see how that browser would work. In any case something else too than netsurf is needed to get more sites to work properly.

File manager.

Backup.

Easy way set overclocking. And now after trying swappolube proposed settings, speedpatch and cssu tuner to edit transitions they would be good too. Not sure what are the default settings for Leste but after I used these and overclocked to 950 this device changed to be really really fast. If there would also be an easy way for changing swappartition size and change it to sdcard it would be awesome. And how does Leste relate to cssu thumb?

Cutetube2 or something to watch (and download) youtube vids (unless they work with a browser).

A mediaplayer.

A camera app. BlessN900 for example or are there more users for BetterCamera? And something to edit and change the size etc.

Notes or/and abiword (if LibreOffice writer wont be possible).

Something to read PDF.

Working RSS feed reader.

MSoma radio/Streamtuner. An internet radio channel program anyway and if radio receiver works a radio app.

A map/routing app.

For my needs Picodrive solves need for games and no need for porting native games. Other emulators is also a good hook for new users.

But if there is still a lot work to be done then all that developers need go obviously ahead.

I am a mere end user and thinking from that point of wiev. I think these would be something that would be good though if advertising Leste and to get more users. Like some basic stuff.

Don't panic text instead of Nokia Hands is a must for me. Helps not to panic when I have messed up things.

It would be great if you guys and girls could add the packages you'd like to the wiki too. That allows me and others to make pages for them, add notes, etc. I took a brief look at rockbox, and determined it'll definitely need some porting. libhal, gst 0.10 for example.

Thing preventing me adding packages to the wiki - is that I don't understand what you ask for. What is this wiki you are speaking of (a thread? a site?), if a site do I need to subscribe before I can add there anything, and do you mean I should find the packages from the repository, save them on my N900 (without installing) and then add them to this wiki somehow - or are you just asking to add the names of these application (does it need to be exact package name with version details) to a same kind of post as this one?

I have been 1 1/2 year quite active here and yet don't understand at all what you ask for. Yet it may be clear to everyone else who reads it. It is quite funny how in on something I can be (or seem I'm in).and yet I am actually all the time being so out of things what people are talking about.

"Add packages to a wiki" can mean many things for me and I don't know the right meaning in this case.

How about starting with a comparison of available browsers, such as the one from archwiki? This is definitely the most important piece of software.

Besides, I definitely need the following software to even consider a switch from Android to Leste:
* a reliable IMAP mail client
* a reliable XMPP client with OMEMO support
XMPP is my principal way of communicating with family and close friends, which was the top reason why I was unable to switch to SailfishOS and sticked to Android.

Furthermore:
* MStarDict
* some offline OpenStreetMap client, similar to OsmAnd (Maemo didn't really have decent offline vector maps)
* some Anki client

These apps constitute 99% of my daily usage.

To others if you are adding stuff to wiki wishlist:
I used FasterApplicationManager.

Click "Remove application" (to get to the ones you are using and probably want to add).

Click the app you want to add to wishlist.

Click on the app window's earth symbol on the upper right corner.

You will get to the page where you can copy link to the latest release of the package.

Was it that now it would be preferred these wishes go to wiki wishlist with links to packages? And if so does this thread serve now as a mere chat forum about what could be good to add?

Just making things clear so there would not be wishes in two places. I think if someone is really seeing the trouble of porting it is good to help with a list in one place and with a link to package.

Modern web browser, XMPP/Telegram client (looking similar to Conversations), IMAP client, hotspot manager, document viewer and music player (MPD client would be good enough).

I think many of the conversations stuff should all go in/via telepathy, which is also how the maemo conversation stuff works, so once we have a UI for it, we can start adding plugins.

simple-brightness-applet was immensely simple to port, please look at git commits here:

All I did was:

1. wget http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p...1maemo0.tar.gz
2. tar xf simple-brightness-applet_1.1-1maemo0.tar.gz
3. cd simple-brightness-applet-1.1/
4. dpkg-buildpackage -uc -b
5. dpkg -i ../simple-brightness-applet_1.1-1maemo0_amd64.deb

Then I extracted the tar again, turned it into a git repository (first commit), added gbp.conf (second commit) and changed the changelog (last commit). Made a tag to match the changelog release (git tag 2.0 ; git push --tags)

Then I added it to our jenkins instance, and fired off the job:

How about Load Applet? I think that is usefull to see the cpu and ram usage bar. Many times I look them to see if something is still loading so I do not hesitate on trying to get something to work if there is load still going on. And those help to see if something stays consuming resources in the back. And that applet has also the sceenshot as well as screen recording which could be usefull if someone wants to show something.

I formatted the rest. I left couple empty lines in the end for copying and filling for others to use. And anyone can edit the proper names for specifications ("fashion" which I used is maybe incorrect choice of wording).

Isn't telepathy basically dead? At least telepathy-gabble didn't have any significant commits since 2014: https://github.com/TelepathyIM/telep...commits/master

On SailfishOS, Shmoose decided not to integrate with Telepathy either. But it will need to keep compatibility with the ancient SailfishOS software stack, which we'd rather avoid on Leste.

I think the best option right now would be to make use of Dino. It'll need some work, such as adding some tray icon support, etc., but it's closest to what we need on Leste. I'll take a look if it builds at all.


/edit: the mesa dev packages are broken on Leste:
pulls libegl1-mesa-dev as a dependency:
/edit2: this is probably an issue with Devuan, on Debian libegl1-mesa-dev, doesn't ship libEGL.so.


Anyway, if this broken dependency is just ignored, dino builds fine and even runs.

Unfortunately, gtk3 apps don't really integrate with hildon-desktop and the status bar overlaps with the important UI parts.

As noted on the wishlist page, it needs to be ported to gst 1.0. (gstreamer)

Fun to see someone else try something adventurous!

I think most projects use telepathy with ofono for telephony, so it's probably a sane choice for that. I can't really comment on gabble.

The EGL issue you're seeing might be related to how we have packaged PowerVR on the Nokia N900.

As far as Gtk3 goes - indeed. We need a Gtk3 theme, and we need to forward port the hildon widgets. Probably in that order.

EDIT: To clarify, I think we'll use telepathy at least for some parts. It should do SIP/VOIP calls OK too. For other accounts/chat, I was hoping we could keep it all integrated, so we'd have to figure out how to integrate multiple backends into the upcoming conversations code then.

I guess it betrays my ignorance, but...
is it possible to use/install proprietary/closed-source apps from the original N900 OS on Leste? Possibly to ensure functionality that currently is not available on Leste?
Not "officially" I guess, but by manually adding the (which?) sources to apt?
And if yes, would these apps be installable & fully compatible with Maemo Leste?
And what about the huge catalogue of opensource apps that exists for the Maemo/MeeGo platform? Openrepos etc.?

I'm not so sure. On one hand, there is ti-omap3-sgx-dev. On the other, dev packages should not contain any .so files. These may have been just symlinks, but I won't be able to check it right now. It would be worth checking if devuan still includes .so files in the newer versions or in backports.




Could we possibly use Gnome Shell instead of hildon? (this may require too much RAM for N900, but possibly for F(x)tec Pro1...?

No ignorance there. Theoretically it should be possible to run some parts of Fremantle on Leste. I've done it - a basic chroot works, but actually /running/ applications runs into lots of weird crashes. They may be something we can solve, I don't know.

As far as packages on maemo.org extras go, as long as they're open, there's a good chance it won't be that much work to port. Especially once we have a Hildon Qt port in place as well.

I don't know specifically about Openrepos, but in addition to whatever we port, packages from Debian are also available.

Devuan doesn't package ti sgx at all as far as I know - this is our package.

Maybe, but it'll require a lot of changes all over the place.

@endsormeans: Yes, for some reason even though I have been reading stuff from the wiki - some I just don't get, some I assume is irrelevant for me and some I forget even if I read. But hey, I have done formatting and adding straightaway to the wiki wishlist after I got a link! So it is not lazyness. My way of doing things has never been the smartest and I try to learn. My learning just don't go the right way. Should I change? Absolutely! Would I like to change! Absolutely! Will I change? Probably not. Wiki is not the place where I should start. I should start from basics of linux. After that I could understand and get more from the wiki.

If Andbox is indeed possible to port and Whatsapp can be installed that would be an immediate change to Leste for me.

The only thing I really need on my phone is Whatsapp (for business).
I can live with not having telephony 24/7 (prefer a stationary voip phone anyway), but having a working telephony app would be my 2nd on the list

Rest is nice to have (and from that list emacs would be *very* nice to have)

Anbox is planned - we have funding for it. Probably not useful on the N900, though (too weak).
Would probably be good on the Droid 4, though. Or on the PinePhone.

Heysms is a big deal to me, I often need a keyboard and like to take/receive my SMSs form my computer which is perfect if I am already tethering for internet.
I just got my pinephone but I am super knocked down by a health ting, so cant do any intensive hacking. Is telephone and SMS working on leste yet?
Is there work on leste for Nexus 7(flo)?

Also if we could port Kodi, it makes multimedia easy with the plugin universe surrounding it.

The SMS and call UI is not yet ready. You can already do SMSes using Empathy, and setting up the right account, but it won't look good until we have the gtk3 theme, and it's also not a great experience compared to the native UI, which will come. I cannot tell you when exactly we will have the call and SMS UI, but we're landing a couple of big missing things soon, and then we will have most other things in place, and call and sms UI will be the remaining pieces, and they will get tackled then.

Thank you wizzup for update. That is really great news. So much waiting for news that Leste is ready to be a daily driver with calls and sms. I have been proud of my N900 but then it will bw a superman among mere mortal smartphones.

I tried Leste for couple of days. I was so happy that chromium was fast enough before I messed up the system. And firefox seemed to be even better on clicking things before I messed up the system and could not launch it. And that I could use synaptic before I messed up the system. And that telegram-desktop worked EVEN THOUGH I messed up the system. I managed to call with telegram but friend heard only bits in space sounds.

You can all be so proud of yourself who have contributed on this project. My contribution is only trying to get more working cheap N900 devices for users.

And as this is a wishlist thread:

1. Is there already a way to overclock easily as in fremantle?

2. Is there an esy way to stop transitions?

3. Is swappolube a no go or is there some other easy way to tweak the performance? I have been doing it for my old laptops and searched what to do after installing linux to make it faster but have not tested those with Leste 'cause I don't know if there are some things to take into consideration with this device.

It would take a simple QT program which edits the config files for a awap editor, I think with the N900 it was the swap was all stock debian for spinning disks vs i/o swap and system on one SSD while also not having enough system memory to always need swap. For the N900 I suppose again making an app editing the clock config files would do the trick, not sure about pinephone or other devices.
