Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
Hopes and dreams we had years ago long dashed.
Let us move this topic to the OLD area at the bottom of TMO and add a sticky that the Neo900 is permanently vaporware rather than at the top of a stack of Meamo/Meego device evolution. Cheers to everyone who was excited for the project but there is nowhere to go with this topic except historical analysis. (edit)The buyable objects have been removed from the Neo900 website's store connected to the donate and prepay buttons. |

Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
Well...
I tried to think of any deliberate negative implied in biketools statement...there isn't any ..nor grudge .. He just said it straight. There is a concern if we have links here to a page that still accepts donations / investment into a project that didn't make it off the ground and whose principal project manager stated publicly that the project is dead. That is an issue. And one we should be addressing if we offer links to functioning donations / investments.. Valid argument. And the issue of putting the neo900 subforums and threads in archive since it claims something it never delivered or will ever deliver... For archival research purposes... Is extremely balanced. I would have insisted it be flushed. At the least a new sub forum created for all the wasted time effort and money and dump them all in there... To serve as a constant reminder and warning ... So ...wish it had come to fruition. But It didn't Wish all the money I put toward one weren't flushed away... But it was. |

You are taking action if somebody created vapourware and stealing money from people. I am wondering why people spend money to a project, when they think like this about it. Have you ever trust the people behind the project and the project itself? Do you really understand the evolution of the project and the resulting outcome. Think about it I, **** happens, the file is closed, life goes on. To move it to the archive is another story and it is worth to think about it. But starting a thread for it... |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
If we look at http://neo900.org/ we can see no mention of the project entering any permanent freeze(end) status. The only notification we have is at TMO. In any case we can believe Joerg and sympathise with his health and resulting financial problems,
(edit)I did poke around the website a bit, and while there are buttons to donate or prepay for a Neo900 there is not any buy-able objects available in the store. I would consider leaving such site up myself were I former lead of such an agressive project as a living CV and proof of great small team accomplishments to show prospective employers. GDC was behind the OpenMoko a phone which while never terribly functional as a phone was pretty cool as the first(AFAIK) phone designed bottom-up for a FOSS OS and userspace. I have a GTA-02 which still works and I am thankful to Joerg and associates for the work he did on the moko series as well as some sweet tweaks and feature hacks toward improving the N900 experience(USB hostmode and H-E-N especially) not to mention his regular presence on TMO. But appreciation of our friends and allies aside the presence in the top device slot of talk.maemo.org for the Neo900 project, one which is no longer a project with any realistic hope of reaching production, and even if someone else obtained the Gerber files it would be a 10 year old design with long EOLed components thet even GDC had to scramble to obtain. I know that there are some useful side and on-topic discussions in the Neo900 threads which we need to keep web-searchable into the future. I mean no disrespect but stacking Neo900 at the top of Maemo devices discussion is misleading to newcomers and is a space possibly better suited to discussing the future of Maemo devices, maybe those compatible with a Maemo-Leste port. I restate my support for moving the Neo900 topic to Old and placing a prominent sticky at the top of that subforum(perhaps also some version of 'never entered production' note next to the TMO main link) respectfully explaining with quotes from Joerg that the project has reached it's end without producing a production ready device and that announcement's date. (edit)The pessimism is warranted, the project is announced dead by joerg_rw there is nothing to be optomistic about at this point, I have no grudge with Joerg, rather I appreciate his work and use USBmode on my N900 frequently with thoughts of thanks to him as well as the other good he has done for us in the past on this forum. But in the real world the Neo900 project is dead with no devices in the wild, there is no reason for a Maemo tech discussion forum to, after the end of a cool nearly realized dream, to project an ultimately unfulfilled fantasy as factual. |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
As sailfish has its own section on the devices page, how about 2 more. One for Leste compatible, and one at the bottom for unreleased/other devices. We could then add a small section, even if only one post describing the product, for the other Maemo 5 device wise details I can't remember. It wasn't a Nokia.

There is resources still available, so it is not dead, it is only in deepfreeze:
http://neo900.org/resources But site should say more clearly that you can take project and continue or start from scratch again. |

Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
Appreciate seeing this thread - first I'm hearing of the Neo900 project being stopped.
I haven't had time to come on TMO for... approximately five years now? I had already inferred that the Neo900 wasn't happening given the way the updates gradually became less substantial and then stopped, but didn't actually know. So yeah, some sort of blatantly visible indication would be nice. No need to interpret it as anything personal to the people involved, just proactively countering how what's already out there might mislead. |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
Good to read you again @MentalistTraceur, has been a long while :)
And yes, I plus one your opinion. Some admin (maybe @JoergRW himself) could just add that to the first post. And done. |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
WTF people..?
Are you deaf? Do you need a link to the quote from the dead horse's mouth so you can all stop beating it? Long ago now.. The project leader Joerg himself ..stated the project is dead. Dead. Call it "deep freeze", " long dormant", "awaiting resurrection" ... Whatever you like.. But those are not the words of the project head. It is dead. Move the whole damned lot ..subforum threads and straggling threads out of the forum and into archives... I for one am not in favour of yet another thread created for discussion. There is zero to discuss. Any argument to keep this whale carcass here is completely a nonstarter its a moot point.. This parrot has left this mortal coil .. To quote Python IF ..and I say IF by the most ridiculously remote possibility the project is truly resurrected ...by ANY team...they can petition the council and offer a reasonable amount of proof to the council... That they are indeed bringing it back .. And then the entirety of the neo subforum and all straggling threads can be reinstated...from the archives. This is not unreasonable. Vetting should be done by our council to make sure the integrity and well being of the community and its members are safe guarded.. It is not unreasonable to move this to archives...at this juncture.. What is unreasonable is that the only folks posting here are new folks who say "where can I invest?", " what happened?", and the common "can't wait for this to be released", and " I hope / wish/ wanted this to get completed" All of which gets answered with an "ain't gonna happen" post by someone else... Activity ... by folks posting here because they couldn't bother to read... or because they have a device complex that needs fulfilling... does NOT.. a "live" project make My vote is to be done with this farcical waste of time, active forum space and archive it until it is deemed an active project again...if ever that occurs... |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
FWIW I asked @joerg_rw in a PM to move it while thanking him for his contribs over the years. He hasn't been around TMO for nearly a year though...
(edit)What is the actual status of the Maemo Council since Jan 2018? That is where the notes on the wiki drop away, even then hot topics include convincing Nokia to provide full commercial support for Meego on the N900. https://wiki.maemo.org/Community_Council (This page was last modified on 22 September 2018, at 09:24) |

In case anyone wants the hard reality direct from joerg_rw on 05-08-2019, here it is... (we are all hoping for the best for him both financially after 5 years of not-profitable work on the Neo900 and for his health) Quote:
I think an important question is who is still around with admin privileges for the website. |

As a current(or former?) Maemo council holder what do we do here? Do you have admin for TMO? I was going to PM you for consultation as I knew you had a leadership role. |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
Doing the thread group change you propose is possible, and you are correct it is the council that should decide if that is necessary. As there has been two opposing priposals on how to proceed I feel that a decision is needed to determine the action.
The current (remaining?) council has not met for some time, even though I have now and then tried to rouse people by email. It seems there is so much other things that have priority. There would be need to arrange election of new council and new board so things could be started rolling again. |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
Ooof, was worried that that would be the answer.
Not so much about the move thread question which is more about order and appropriateness (IMHO), but the reality that this like so many great online communities are winding down. I remember it happening to the old OpenZaurus community forums too. It seems like everything is centralizing in places like reddit where I feel there is a real privacy concern. I miss the days when we would get maybe 100 comments or more a day here. |
Re: Move Dead Neo900 project topic to OLD
Yeah...
That was me.. But I've mellowed in the years since.. Hahaha.. Ah we few ... We brave few...valiant lunatics... We just gotta keep with the maemo love ...people... OpenZaurus may have wound down.. But ..it ain't maemo. I think we are riding a "Mellow Age" currently... That is all... Time was ... Everyone was afraid the place would be shut.. Still here... Folks still working away on stuff... They are just quiet about it... Publicizing this or that thing one is working on...detracts from time spent actually working... And yes folks have lives too...outside this place ... So yeah.. We may have had more posters daily in the past... But quantity doesn't equate to quality. We are.. Just ...mellower dood. |
