Phone Camera Competition July 2020: "See through"

Thank you for voting for my photo in the June 2020 competition. I feel honoured!

My first idea for the new theme was "Water". But, as it turns out, we had that theme in January 2014. I briefly considered "Booze", but that would be a) blowing my own trumpet and b) too obvious. It can be a theme for some other time.

Then I had a brain wave. What is the most obvious property of both water and the containers water is usually stored in? That's right, transparency!

Anything transparent or see-through will do. Any liquid, solid or gas.
A bottle of gin. A net curtain. Even your significant other's sexy nightie ;)

Have fun snapping!

Rules are as usual:
  • Photos must be taken during this month, between the theme being announced and the voting starting;
  • Photos must be taken by the posting member;
  • Photos must be taken with a phone camera;
  • Post-processing is allowed but you have to say what you did;
  • Users must name the phone and software they used;
  • Users post only one photo per entry;
  • Users can change the entry only once;
  • The last 3 days of the month are reserved for voting.

Re: Phone Camera Competition July 2020: "See through"

Neither of those images are entries because one is from June, and the other is too ugly.
But both fit the topic perfectly!

Both taken with Xperia XA2, SailfishOS stock camera app. One is cropped, no other post-processing.

I like the third one. Hands down.

Here is another example. NOT my entry due to the lack of sharpness, but it contains not one, but TWO examples of transparency: the beer glass and the window behind:

Attachment 41180

Incidentally, the little girl inside comes from this family. She strayed from her sisters and found her way inside our house. The picture was taken just before reuniting her with her family.

Attachment 41181

The swarm had taken up residence in our plum tree. I called a bee keeper I know to come and collect them:

Three photographs are attached. One of them is off-topic, a piece of self-saucing pudding made from a student cookbook. Another is layer of water and foam, thin at the moment but still opaque . And third is of air see-through, with sky light and bright blue.

Thank you. Best wishes.

Seeing right through the semi-transparent molted exuvia of a cicada. Not an etymologist, but I have a google machine and am gonna call this one a Neotibicen linnei, an annual cicada. When they emerge from the earth where they've spent the last year or 5 sucking on roots, they climb onto something vertical in order to shed the shell that protected them in their underground environment. Often found on tires and trash cans, this one is in the much more natural setting of a nodding onion, itself an interesting plant because it blooms in summer rather than spring like most allium family members.

Edit: Forgot (again) to say Xperia X, Sailfish X, Piggz Advanced Camera

Re: Phone Camera Competition July 2020: "See through"

Some really good entries this month. I am having a tough time choosing the winner.
My favourites are:
  • 3. Fellfrosh. You stole my idea. I was thinking about a view through a glass, bottle or demijohn of something. But my background would look nothing like yours. How can your place look so neat and tidy?
  • 7. nonsuch. You presented three pictures and took my recommendation to choose the competition entry. Feeling responsible is only part of the reason. That picture is really good.
  • 9. kinggo. A nice, tempting look through the bicycle wheel spikes, with the additional see through the railway power lines at the background. Excellent composition, lighting and colours. I wonder who held the bike while you were taking the picture.

And my vote this month goes to... 9. kinggo.

Sorry, nonsuch. Your entry is excellent and nearly won my vote, but kinggo's triggered something in me that reminded me of my teenage years. You cannot argue with sentimentality :(

Re: Phone Camera Competition July 2020: "See through"

Thanks Pichlo for the great summary.

It's a bit shame we've had 2 entries which either not specifying the phone or which one to enter...

I vote for 2. Catbus this time. Very nice catch seeing through the rainbow / water.

Re: Phone Camera Competition July 2020: "See through"

Just so you don't get the impression i forgot about your theme, no.
I just failed while trying too much /o\

Below attached the attempt of seeing through an actual sigma macro lense with the Proš.
But i never got it right in too many attempts. Should have discarded the idea...

Great ideas and entries everyone!
My vote is on #4 Pentona with another stunningly simple compostion. So my question is answered, your colored photos look just as artistic than the B+W one you posted.
I really would like to be able to do such simple yet striking shots.

My not entry:

Re: Phone Camera Competition July 2020: "See through"

I still like my own entry best :o but my vote goes to 8. pichlo - not so much for the quality of the picture (white balance is too cold for my taste) but for a fascination with children's architectonic creativity, an almost chaotic, fractal-like structure, more grown than built.

...see, no hard feelings :D

Honorable mention for fellfrosch's Double Rainbow!

that's why there's a part of the wheel in top left :( I could have avoid that but then I would lose that 3 part symmetry in the distance.
This tracks are quite busy so not really a place to stick your head around to make a perfect shot.

my vote goes to #1. peterlenchen,
but TBH, the one i like the most is 7. nonsuch, but 60% is in front, 35% is around/behind and not much of see through there.
And 3. Fellfrosh, he hit the subject. But empty clean glass is instant fail :D

Shame on me..:o, I do the dish washing REALLY just once in a year and exactly then came this competition.... :D

My 12 points are going to kinggo (#9). Interesting perspective, nailed the theme, great shot!
On second for me robthebold. Unfortunately the focus isn't exactly there, where it should be. Otherwise...
Third: peterleinchen, for a very cute motive and nailing the theme also... but from other side.

You are absolutely right. I did not notice that at the time due to Jolla's, let's just say, "less than perfect" screen, and did not want to edit it afterwards. Shrinking in Paint was the maximum extent of editing I allowed myself - only because I had to. Otherwise the TMO uploader either refused it or accepted but the picture was shown sideways.
Boy does the TMO uploader suck big time!

To be honest, the picture would have made no sense without it and would not have voted for it.
There you go. Some "drawbacks" turn out to be advantages.

kinggo 2020-07-30 10:07

Re: Phone Camera Competition July 2020: "See through"

it would. I deliberately put phone far enough from the wheel so that you have whole that "see through" object in front of you as the first thing you see in the photo. I did try with closer positioning but then I got only a few spokes and that was not it.
