Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Hi everyone
I am new here, am am not a techie person so please be gentle with me! I loved the reviews I read about Kagu Media Player so decided I would give it a try, the only problem is I cannot install Python 2.5 on my Nokia n800. Here is the way I have tried to do this: Went to: http://pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/installation.html Downloaded and installed Base Repository Then downloaded and ran installer. The error I get when running the installer is: 'Unable to install. Some application packages required for the installation are missing.' If I click on details I am told: 'Unable to install python2.5-runtime Application packages missing: libffi4 (>=4.1.0-1osso1) After browsing the forums here, I have tried the following methods of installation: Downloading the file to my documents folder and running from there. Downloading the file to my documents folder and running from Application Manager. Trying to install from anew via: http://pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/installation.html in 'Red Pill' mode I also followed all the suggestions at: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...hp/t-4739.html Can anyone offer any additional help or advice? I have the latest Nokia operating system installed. Thanks. Martin |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
I'm having the same problem with the latest os.

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Same here, have tried 6 ways from sunday with different repositories, directly from Python, etc., still no luck.. Hopefully someone will come up with a fix soon, as I can't install half the programs I used to use just yesterday because of the new firmware "upgrade".
|
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
So, you uninstalled Python 2.4, right?
And you carefully read this page: http://pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/pyma...easenotes.html ? In particular, this part 'Warning: It is necessary to remove ALL applications that depends on Python2.4 BEFORE you remove python2.4-runtime. This is necessary to ensure that all python2.4 packages will be correctly removed.' |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
If you are planning to use only Kagu, in my experience it does install the necessary Python runtime libraries automagically if you have Base repository listed in your repository list. I have installed Kagu several times (after fresh OS flash) in the past few weeks and it always worked like a charm...
The downside is that if you do this, you'll not see Python in your installed applications. But if you go to Xterm and type python, then you'll see that it is indeed installed. Worth giving a try. (But I haven't tried this with the LATEST firmware.) (This was discussed in other thread... something like "Kagu 1.0.8..." if you do a search...) |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
A)I got Python 2.4 to install (after reading you may have to have 2.4 installed before you can upgrade to 2.5), and when I went to install 2.5 it comes up with the same thing, can't install missing libffi4 (>=4.1.0-1osso1) and a conflict with 2.4...
B)Um, we are only NOW having problems SINCE we updated to the new firmware..I had 0 problems with Python before this new update. And many, many of the apps we all know and love will NOT install because of this issue.. (UKMP, UKTUBE, OMWeather, Mclock, Kagu and many more) |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
The package libffi4 is available :
http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p...sso1_armel.deb After, You can install python2.5. |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
If the package is there, why isn't it listed in the application installer (red pill mode)?

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
I clicked on the link above for libffi and it installed just fine. Now, when I try to install Python 2.5 it can't find dpkg!!!

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Same here again. incompatible app pkg..

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
NEWBIE ALERT! (that would be me). Sorry for lack of detail above. It states:
Application packages missing: python2.5-minimal (>=2.5.0) dpkg (>=1.13.20) So, the python2.5-minimal is present in the list of installable apps, but trying to install it still comes up with the same missing package: dpkg. |

First, the library does not appear in libs under the Application Manager. Done Package libffi4 is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package libffi4 has no installation candidate It's possible my sources.list file is not set up correctly. Where did you get the libffi4? Perhaps something went wrong with my install. I can't use the MicroB browser either. Anyway...I'm still looking for a libffi4 -- Mike |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
If it just doesn't work, which is what seems to be being implied, how come I was able to install it after reading your message?

In any case, if you're accessing it from a repository then you can also do 'apt-cache show libffi4' to get an idea of what it requires etc. EDIT: You can also do 'apt-cache policy libffi4' to display which repository you're getting it from. This could be useful in case there are several variants around. |

http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p.../libf/libffi4/
What happened when you double clicked on the link on this page? When I clicked on the one that doesn't refer to a 386 or to dev, it installed just fine. |

I have all my repositories from the last firmware (I did a backup and restore) and I have the "extras" repository set. Where should we get this? What repository is it on? Since others are having this problem, I hope I'm not bugging the list here with just my problem. -- Mike |

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Hm, this looks a bit strange.. I have libffi4 installed, but apt-cache policy doesn't list the repo. That indicates that it's in the repo but not in the packages list. Don't know how I got it installed then, maybe it came with the July firmware upgrade? You can try to download the armel version (libffi4_4.1.0-1osso1_armel.deb), and then use 'dpkg -i' on the file to install it. (You may have to be root).
NB: In any case, make sure you have either the last (September) or the next-to-last (July) firmware flash update installed, if you haven't then things won't work anyway as far as I can see. |

"unable to install. incompatible application package" error. What's going on here? I've only had my 770 for a day, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only person with this problem. * I was also not able to install python2.5 on os2006 ( gregale ). Python 2.4 installed fine. |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
I now think there's an intermittent problem with the extras repository on repository.maemo.org, as I notice (in application manager) that several applications that used to be there are now apparently gone (e.g. 'zip', and also 'omweather' I think -- I have had it sitting in the 'upgrades' display for quite a while now without upgrading, and now it's gone).
That would explain why installing this had been working fine for some of us, but now it isn't working. I think the repo problem occured yesterday or today. Let's see what happens tomorrow or in the near future. |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Ok...just to muddy the waters even more...
I downloaded the package file and ran "dpkg -i" on it. It installed without a problem. Then, the Python 2.5 runtime downloaded fine through the Application Manager, and Maemochron installed and ran without a hitch. This is wierd. When I tried to install the same file through the Application Manager, I got the "incompatible" error. Doesn't the AM just do a "dpkg"? Anyway...all you who have problems...try "dpkg -i" through the xterm. -- Mike |

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Mike: Yes, I did a fresh install of the latest firmware, from the Nokia site, using the WinXp software Nokia provides, yesterday.
I did a backup first, and immediately restored the backup after the flash. I solved whatever slight problems I had by installing Python 2.4 and then having to remove ii and install 2.5 months ago. |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
I get the impression that 100% of the people who have this problem had installed Python 2.4 and now are using Python 2.5.
There should be warnings about ever installing Python 2.4. The only 'easy' way to solve this I can think of is reflash your system, don't restore it and don't install Python 2.4, ever. I think there are more complex ways to solve it, but they seem messy. |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Even on a fresh Flash I can non get python2.5 to install. It keeps saying I'm missing libffi4. When trying with os2006 on a fresh flash I am missing even more files. At least when I run os2007 HE I can see 2.5, but it's not the most current. The most current python is 0.4-12. My application manager only can see 0.4-10. I think this is where a big part of the problem starts.

And many system packages show as upgradeabe (which I'm not to keen to do since this was the cause I had to reflash, before I just tried to flash the kernel and initfs then upgrade the system packages, and that made the nokia splash screen permanent, i.e. I could only access the tablet via ssh) |

Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Enable the redpill mode :
in the applications manager Go to "Tools > Application catalogue", click "New", enter "matrix" into the "Web Address" field, click "Cancel". Choosing the red pill will activate the red pill mode, obviously, and chosing the blue one will deactivate it. and click on this link to install the missing package : http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p...sso1_armel.deb After, You can install python2.5 and other applications. David. |
Re: Cannot Install Python 2.5 on Nokia n800
Yes, tahitibob, the package is there but it is not listed in the Packages file, so it means the repositories are borked. You can install manually that file, but then eventually you'll have problems for other missing ones until the repositories are fixed.

Thank you, Tahitibob - that's got it. I have now successfully downloaded Python2.5. However, when I now try to install Kagu I get the error: Unable to Download. Application package not found. I get this error even though I am downloading the package directly from the Maemo.org website. Any thoughts? |
