Why I still can't choose to store the videos on the internal memory card ?
I don't understand this.

zerojay 2007-10-03 12:20

Re: Video Center Updated Today

I don't understand either, but the people working on it said that it wasn't possible for some reason.

anidel 2007-10-03 12:21

Re: Video Center Updated Today

Where did they say that ?

zerojay 2007-10-03 12:22

Re: Video Center Updated Today

I don't remember exactly where it was, but I remember seeing it somewhere.

anidel 2007-10-03 12:24

Re: Video Center Updated Today

well ok... I hope they can fix the "reason" when it'll be out of beta.

Re: Video Center Updated Today

FWIW, last night I started on a tool to expose your PC's video files as thumbnail-toting RSS feeds to VideoCenter.

My intended use for this is to run it on my PVR so I can pick and choose PVR recordings to download/stream with transcoding them on the fly, but unlike other solutions doesn't rely on MythTV, VDR or any other particular backend. It just handles videos.

Theoretically, there's no reason it couldn't also expose RSS feeds like YouTube's through itself and, again, transcode on the fly when requested.

It's still a way off a release, but should support Windows, Linux and OS X. It'll also be usable direct from the web browser with Media Player or any random streaming mplayer front-end.

It's similar to Janne Makinen's "knots", but with a greater concentration on integration into auto-downloading and synchronisation (assuming that if Video Center doesn't do this yet, it will do soon)

zerojay 2007-10-03 12:36

Re: Video Center Updated Today

Any solution would be great. Something that wouldn't also be limited to LAN would be nice too.

aflegg 2007-10-03 12:46

Re: Video Center Updated Today

No reason it'd be limited to the LAN if you have a direct Internet connection to your box, and an appropriate hole in your firewall, it'd work over the network.

I must be missing something obvious... but can't you use Orb? I have my home PC setup running Orb server and I can browse pictures and movies (which I selected to be shared) on my PC via N800 either using File Manager or Web browser... The PC does the video transcoding on the fly... This does work too over the internet, as long as router and firewall settings are correct.

I know you mentioned these RSS-feeds... which is likely the obvious thing I'm missing... :o

Re: Video Center Updated Today

I didn't think Orb had a Linux client.

Anyways, I'd rather an open source solution.

Likely it doesn't... My home PC has WinXP... :o

I told that I'm missing something obvious! :p

Indeed, the main reasons, as zerojay said: open source and Linux-based.

In addition:
  • GUI-less operation (probably with web-based configuration) so it can run on my headless server
  • RSS transcoding (which you mention)
  • Freevo FXD and MythTV DB parsing for additional metadata
  • Video Center config files for easy installation on N800
  • Entirely under your control: no signups on external websites.

But otherwise, yes, it looks a bit like Orb.

Andrew, let me know if you need help testing your app. I think I've got a pretty good stress/torture test as I've got about 3.5TB of videos on my Linux box at home. Not sure anyone else would push it more than I would.

Re: Video Center Updated Today

Thanks Zerojay for the info on VideoCenter, and the link to the update. After the firmware update yesterday, it wouldn't load, so I figured there was an updater in the works. Well, I have just updated, thinking it would solve the problem, but alas, it still just doesn't load. I get the little 'loading' window, then it just goes away and nothing happens.

Has this happened to anyone else? It looks like others are using it w/no trouble.

BTW I was not able to install MicroB...think there's a connection?

zerojay 2007-10-03 14:24

Re: Video Center Updated Today

Did you install all four needed packages?

Re: Video Center Updated Today

I just noticed that since a few bugs have been fixed, its practical to use this as a podcasting client. I added all my podcast feeds as services and marked them all as read. Now when a new podcast comes out it automatically appears after hitting the update button. I can then download it and listen to it offline. Hurray!

It happened to me with the former version of VC. At the beginning it wouldn't start. I tried running from the terminal too, but got an error I can't remember now.
Then.. I think.. uhm.. I've restarted the tablet and it worked.

Anyway I think I tried two things: restart the tablet or remove the videocenter folder from the memory card.

Try and let us know.

Anidel, thanks for your prompt reply. It worked! I did both, removed the VC folder and rebooted. Voila! And, Media player works now!

Re: Video Center Updated Today

I'm having problems opening the install links in the Video Service Catalogue. I assume it's a MIME issue, but it now opens it up as text instead of trying to install in Video Center.

Re: Video Center Updated Today

I set up the external video player as mplayer using the recommended settings and
when video center efficiently let mplayer play, the video froze. Then I soon discovered that video center wouldn't open at all. The only way I got it back was to uninstall and reinstall video center. I still can't use mplayer or the same thing will happen again. I'll try removing the video center directory.

Greetings:

I don't about you folks and Video Center, but for me this is what I get.

I've just update Video Center to 2.0.41 version.
I installed some plugins like Videocenter-ci-plugins-base version 0.0.25 and
Video Center plugins version 2.0.24.

Ok, I restarted my N800, just in case.

I open the Extras folder find the icon Video Center, click on it
and a popup windows states: Video Center Loading.

And Nothing Happens.

The program does not open, the earth does not shake.

Help, I need Help.

Regards Robert

My Video center seems to work, the versions after upgrade,
mplayer 1.0rc1-maemo.18.n770
vc-epg-widget 0.0.33
videocenter 2.0.41
videocenter-ci-plugins-base 0.0.16
videocenter-plugins 2.0.15

before upgrade,

mplayer 1.0rc1-maemo.18.n770
vc-epg-widget 0.0.33
video center 2.0.32
video center-ci-plugins-base 0.0.16
videocenter-plugins 2.0.15

Apparantly only the VC 2.0.32 has been changed.

My system: 2007He2007.36-2 Flash/MMC 2G w MMCplus patch

Hey Robert,

Did you also delete the videocenter folder on your mmc? I think this was the key for my 'fix', followed by the reboot.

Re: Video Center Updated Today

This update is worthless for me. Same problems as before.
If it's a small video file it can easily be streamed (GeekBrief) but if it's a large file/stream it stutters and crashes Mplayer, and yes I enabled the 1024 cache.
Also, they STILL haven't fixed the problem with their "internal" player (Kmplayer).
When using the internal one it pops up Kmplayer but since they didn't bother to patch the VC client to actually pass the stream URL it just loads up a blank Kmplayer.

While the app is cute, it's quite worthless.
They need to go talk to the S60 podcast programmers and learn how to build a proper application like this.
And no, I'm not filling out any more of their silly-assed bug reports or sending something to a mailing list. If Nokia wants to learn from us advanced users then they can get their asses in here and create their own damned bug reports from what they find in here.
Otherwise the "official" Nokia IT programmers can go to hell and I'll stick with the fine offerings from the "unofficial" fan programmers and porters.

KMplayer is NOT their internal player. The internal player is Media Player. Kmplayer doesn't appear to accept externally passed URLs at all from any application. I've noticed this in the past before Video Center was even released. That's not Video Center's fault. I've been able to stream hour long videocasts with mplayer without a problem (without using -cache at all).

Might be a good idea to know what you're talking about before you tell people working hard on giving you what you want to go to hell when your problems aren't even their fault. That kind of attitude impresses no one, "official" or not.

Some of us live in America where we can pretty much tell anyone we want to go to hell.
And own handguns...well, in most states. And smoke cigarettes. And eat red meat.
And invade other countries at will. (looking at you, Burma...)

They did fix ONE thing: it nows actually opens up the player when clicking the stream >> button.
Other than that, it's pretty much worthless. One would think they would at least update their little service catalogue website at least.

Re: Video Center Updated Today

Yes, but coming down hard on someone who floats a beta copy of something and it actually has problems like a beta copy is entitled to, is a bit much.

Yes, the Kmplayer is not too swift. I think that it's the only program I've used here that I have repeatedly been forced to delete because it got in the way of everything else.

And I was tempted to start a thread entitled 'Video Center Sux', but I thought better of it. The concept is admirable, and this version is better than the last.

But all the tech girls on the videos get tiresomer and tiresomer...

zerojay 2007-10-04 02:35

Re: Video Center Updated Today

That's why you add your own feeds. Here's a good list. Most should work with either mplayer or media player. Xvid small works best if given a choice.

Agreed on the tech girls, Cari especially. Ugh.

RobMtl007 2007-10-04 10:12

Re: Video Center Updated Today

Greetings:

Have all these elements upgraded:

mplayer 1.0rc1-maemo.18.n770
vc-epg-widget 0.0.33
videocenter 2.0.41
videocenter-ci-plugins-base 0.0.16
videocenter-plugins 2.0.15

Even After a Reboot, VideoCenter does not load.

Can I open Xterm and then open VideoCenter to see what is wrong.

I don't know how to work Xterm.
Can someone tell me what string line I should write.

Regards Robert

Xlnt, Zerojay, thanks for this link. Just what I've been looking for. This will help till (if:) the catalogue gets underway.

BTW I found, thanks to a previous poster, that my audio podcast feeds work in VC as well. I added the feed to radiolab and voila, the whole list appears (gpodder was inconsistent)!

Until such time as it can download videos to an internal memory card, VideoCenter is 100% useless to me. Downloading to the device's internal memory will fill internal memory after just one or two videos. So it really must be pointed at a memory card, of which I only have one in the internal slot.

So just move it to the external slot then?

No, because the external slot is reserved for "temporary use" situations -- e.g., putting a camera's card in it and then copying from the camera's card to the internal card.

There was a thread once about increasing the cache size for either mplayer or video center or some such thing and I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Anyone have a clue where it is?
