N810 will be priced at $479?

I found this price on www.engadget.com. But I can not find the price on Nokia website.

So is this price believable or not? When can it available in Canada?

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

I can't believe such a huge price difference between N810 and N800.

I think I'll have to buy the N800 after all, even though I'm always very skeptical of buying devices that have optimized versions in the market already.

GPS and HW keyboard are not really a priority to me, and with OS2008 coming to N800, I think I'll be very happy with it already.

Exactly.
I expect $700 in US and $800-900$ in UK
on first delivery of Nokia 810.

GPS + maps + navigation is still priced not less than $250-300.
Subtracting $300 from $700 you get basic price of $400.

But I still await Nokia 900 iPhone (3G phone + GPS + WiFi, Bluetooth, Wimax ) Linux based OS below $2000.

The 770 was $389 or something like that, the N800 was $399, and the N810 is $479, but includes the car mount in the box. I'd say the price has more or less risen ~$20-30 with each iteration. For what you're getting, I htink it's pretty dern cheap.

So $100 for a car mount?

It's definitely not cheap, or good value. With the iPod touch and the Asus Eee showing the way for bargain prices, Nokia is running the risk of pricing itself out of the market. Sure, the N810 is far more capable than the touch or Eee, but that means didley squat to non-gadget freak users. They just want to get online while out and about.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. The 810 is a crucial step in the history of the Net tablet, and it might be seen in hindsight as the moment that Nokia removed themselves from the game by pricing themselves out.

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

Yeah, 80 bucks more expensive.
Components added: GPS ($30 retail), 2 GB flash (necessary for holding those maps, $20), slider keyboard (price unknown).

The retail price is comprehensible: indeed, it makes perfect sense, but I suspect it's going in the wrong direction for widescale adoption.

Don't forget that the maps will add to the cost as well (try buying them yourself from TeleAtlas, they're certainly not free). And the navigation software will cost something too. The increased price (compared to the N800) obviously makes sense.

The maps are a free download, done directly from the Wayfinder app on the tablet. Only thing that costs is voice navigation. This is a similar setup to Nokia Maps. You can fully use it without paying a penny.

As for pricing themselves out of the market, I don't think they're worried. The N810/N800 is still not a consumer device. I think it's still closer to a geek device than a consumer device, but it's moving that direction, just not there yet.

I don't think they've priced themselves out of anything, personally. Hell, a standalone GPS unit with a 4" touchscreen alone is at least $400. Much less everything else included.

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

Exactly. Also, Nokia wants to differentiate between N800 and N810 also through pricing. And of course that just the initial retail price, will probably go down by about $50 sometime in the spring, after the Christmas sales period.

Which was TA-t3's point. You don't have additional costs for maps after your purchase of a N810 because the cost is built into the price of the N810. That's likely the bulk of the price increase over the N800.

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

Then they should offer that $50 off price before Christmas in order to move more stock than waiting on later. That's not a smart move to think that it'll move only when you've exploited the early adopter money first while trying to become a consumer while not fully there yet.

Simply put, they're right outside of the area of "impulse buy" and the inevitable comparisons to the Apple iPod Touch - I know, I know, different market, item, sector, purpose, et al... but the average consumer won't see that until much, much later and usually it's places run by enthusiasts, like this site for instance, that do a lot of educating for those types if they seek it out - and it's going to sit on the shelves this Winter until Spring.

And by that time, the increased rumors of the N900 will steal possible sales from this machine.

I'm from from typical consumer, but equally distant from early adopter and the price on this item has me on the fence of "wait and see" if the price does drop a bit, or nab a N800 for as cheaply as I did my 770. Or wait for the N900... or see if Apple improves the iPhone (different item/gadget/purpose, I know already) or the iPod Touch.

Either way, the price increase is only being understood by the enthusiasts... not by the people that they need to be targeting... more consumers.

That's just my personal opinion. But one I'm willing to stick to...

The N810 is not a consumer device yet, IMO. It's still a geek toy. All of the other tablets have debuted at $400ish, so why should this be any different? I don't think $100 more (after taxes) is that big a deal, honestly.

And why not do the (rumored, keep in mind) price cut before christmas? The thing's only launching mid-November. They're not Apple, to cut the price before necessary.

And don't forget this is list. I expect retailers to eventually drop their price a bit (but it may go for list at launch).

I'd like to see a lower price ASAP, but given the additional features you cite (plus the maps as TA-t3 pointed out) I can see the rationale.

the price difference is too great between the n800 and the n810 though. If retailers hadn't started dropping the price on the n800, then yes, it makes sense that there's that little bit of a gap. But the difference between 240 (buy.com price) and 480 is a big gap. wait, its twice as much! :)

The N800 has also been on the market for a year almost. Lol.

Yeah, but essentially, the underlying hardware is more or less the same.

Would you buy the same laptop you bought last year for twice the price just because it is a little bit smaller, came with a few extra peripherals and lost an expansion port as well?

You just described a Mac Book product refresh. ;)

I all honesty I do agree with the sentiment. Given that so much of the underlying hardware is the same, it's hard to swallow the $80 premium. The understandable increases in cost are bound to have been made up for by the cost savings since the n800 initially listed.

But, as usual, price isn't being set by cost, but by willingness to pay.
In fact, most times willingness to pay leads to target price bands which are used to dictate costs.

The $480 price looks more like market research than a result of increased cost.

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

$479 for such a device is nuts!...I don't see where/why people are saying that it's too much. In the past people endlessly *****ed about the lack of a keyboard. Here you go. GPS? here you go...

N800 - $350...let's just round...
Navkit - $180...do the math.

Although I would love nothing more than to pay less for this device, I think $479 is reasonable. My 2 cents of course.

Texrat 2007-10-19 17:56

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

Come on. You guys have to know that including the slider keyboard alone wasn't done cheaply.

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

I'm not complaining. A buddy of mine's been very interested in the tablets since I talk about my N800 all the time. If I get the N810 discount from Nokia, he'll buy it for me and I'll ship him my old N800. I think it's a pretty good deal for us both. ;)

I am not sure I like the design. I do not like having to pull the keyboard out to use DPAD. Am I the only one who finds this a design flaw?

Are there any (pictures) side by side comparisons out here yet n800/n810

If you are a very heavy d-pad user, I can understand it, but the whole point of having a touchscreen is to avoid using a d-pad anyways. I rarely touch the d-pad and mainly use my stylus or fingertips, so it's not too much of a pain for me.

Probably not in the right thread... but how about this crazy idea: Instead of having a physical HW-keyboard in slide out tray, what if there is another touch screen? The function of this second screen is to be the virtual keyboard, as well as secondary function as a touchpad to replace the mouse (as seen in laptops). The function of the screen between keyboard/touchpad maybe can be accomplished with a single mode button somewhere...

The secondary screen does not need to be very high resolution, something like 320x120 might be enough... it can be even black&white!. If this (the mouse part) works well then the main screen would not even need to be touch screen!

Now... waiting for your comments about how crazy I'm when suggesting this... :D

What's the benefit of not just using the fullscreen board on the main touchscreen? If we can get some transparency with that, it'll be perfect.

It is an interesting idea, but the virtue of having hardware buttons is in the tactility and haptic nature of them. If virtual keyboards would be better, then we'd all be using them in our PC's. Of course this is not the case.

I guess the question is that what would the gain be in this?

(By the way, I also belong in the camp who doesn't understand at all the point of the "Optimus keyboard", with displays in each of the buttons. You're not supposed to look at the keyboard, you're supposed to learn where every character/function is and they're supposed to remain static.)

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

The other thing that has changed, and that people are probably overlooking, is that the US Dollar has weakened considerably since the first two tablets were released. Prices for lots of imported things are going up. (It is speculated that this is one of the reasons why the $199 price tag for the soon-to-be-released Asus eee PC has risen to $299 and $399.)

Certainly the slideout keyboard and GPS also add substantial cost to the manufacturing unit cost, but that probably only contributes partially to the price differential between original launch prices for 770, N800, and the new N810.

The benefit I'd think is that you'd see the complete screen. Your fingers/thumbs would not block your view. Second, I still miss the visible mousepointer that having the "mousepad" (and the virtual mousebuttons) would make possible.

The downside is that you would always need to open the slide to operate the device.

Re: N810 will be priced at $479?

You know, I really love the idea of the N810 as a compliment to my Treo, almost like a Foleo replacement since that was canned. As such, the built-in GPS and slide-out keyboard really appeal to me.

However, I'm not entirely sure I can justify double the price just for GPS and a keyboard, so its a tough decision. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the actual street price might be? (Also, I really wish it used full-sized SDHC cards like the N800, because I've got a spare 8GB one lying around that I can't use in my Treo anymore because the newest one has mini-SD instead, so I'm really not sure which way I'll decide yet.)
